*ClinicDays-The“clinic”daysaredesignedtogiveeveryoneachancetoplayandlearnabouttheinstrumentstheywouldliketoplayduringtheseason.Thesedayswillbelow-stress,andthefocuswillbeonsettingeachindividualupforasuccessfulseason.Aftereachclinicdayyouwillbegivenanideaofwhereyoustand,andmaybeaskedtotryadifferentinstrumentatthenextclinicday.TheDrumLinewillbesetattheconclusionofthe“FinalClinic”.YoumustattendeachclinicdayinordertobeintheDrumLine.

Expectations• Attitude-Themostimportantthingthatyouneedtohaveisagoodattitude.If

youhaveadesiretolearnandawillingnesstomakechanges,youwillbesuccessfulinthisgroup.

• Discipline-Somethingthatwillbetakenveryseriouslyisourdiscipline.Ifwearetopositivelyimpactthecultureofthemarchingband,wemusttakeourselvesseriouslyandbeintentionalwithouractions.

• Preparedness-Averyimportanthabittodevelopistoalwaysbeprepared.Forinstance:whenaskedtomemorizeyourmusic,youneedtodothatbeforethenextrehearsal,orwhengoingouttotherehearsalfield,youmustalwayshaveyourmusicandcoordinatesheetwithyou.

• Respect-Thiscoversmanythings:listeningtoanyinstructionsthatarebeinggiven,takingcareofequipment,andtreatingyourclassmateswithrespectwhileyouareamemberofthedrumline.

• Fun-Don’tforgetthatplayingdrumsshouldbefun!Wewillbeseriouswhenweneedtobe,butdon’tforgetbeinggoodatsomethingiswaymorefunthanbeingterrible.

PositionsintheDrumLineWhileitwouldbenicetogiveeveryoneaspotontheirfirstchoiceofinstrument,weonlyhaveacertainnumberofdrumsatBlackman,andwealsoneedtohavecertainratiosofeachinstrumenttosoundgoodasadrumline.Beopentolearningsomethingnewandunexpected.Dependingonhowmanypeopleaudition,wemaymarchwith:7SnareDrums4Quads6BassDrums6Racks5-8CymbalsAdditionalRequirements

• Everyoneshouldhavethemusicforhisorherpreferredinstrumentpreparedandmemorized.

• Quaddrummerswillplayallofthemusicondrum2aswellasaroundthedrums.• Bassdrummerswillplaythesnarepart(unison)andthesplitpart(exceptforthe

Cadence).Befamiliarwiththesplitsforeachdrum;youmaybeaskedtomovearoundthebassline.

• Rackplayerswillplaythesnaredrumpartfortheexercises.• Cymbalplayerswillneedtobeingoodphysicalshape.Theprimaryrequirement

tomaketheCymbalLineisphysicalstrength.Therearealotofflipsandtricksthatthecymbalsdothatrequireupperbodystrengthtoperform.

Technique GeneralApproach/Stroke

• Relaxed-Asyouplay,staycompletelyrelaxedfromyourwaistup.Weneedtoplaywiththetophalfofourbody,whilethebottomhalfgetsuswhereweneedtogo.

• Rebounded-Eachstroke,highorlow,willutilizereboundfromthedrumthesameway.

• WristInitiated-Eachstrokeisinitiatedfromthewrist.Bendatthewristasifknockingonadoor(Bassdrumswillrotateasifopeningadoorknob).Donotliftthestickbyopeningupthefingersorbyraisingthearm.

Dynamics/HeightsInpercussion,stickheightsareusedtoplaydynamics.Thereheightsaremeasuredininches(“).Thestrokeisalwaysthesame(relaxed,rebounded,andwristinitiated),onlytheheightsdictatethedynamics.

P=3” 1/5ofafullwristturn.Thiswillputyourstickatparallel.

Snare Drum

GripRightHand-Thefulcrumislocatedbetweenthethumbandtheindexfinger.Thisisthepointfromwhichthestickpivotsinyourhand.Thispivotpointshouldbelocatedattheoptimalbalancepointofthestick,whichisgenerallylocatedabout1/3upthelengthofthestickfromthebuttend.Therestofthefingersshouldbewrappednaturallyaroundthestick.Theyshouldbelooseandrelaxedbutcanneverleavethestick.Theforearmandstickwillformastraightlinefrombeadtothumbandthumbtoelbow.

LeftHand-Theleftstickwillsitinthewebbedareabetweenthethumbandfirstfinger.Thefingerswewillthenmakearelaxed“C”shape.Thethumbwilltouchthefirstfingeratthelastknuckle.Maintainthisconnectionatalltimes.Thestickwillsitonthecuticleoftheringfinger.Theangleofthestickshouldformastraightlinefromthethumbtotheelbow.

SetPositionThebeadsofthestickswillrestinthecenterofthedrumhead,1⁄2inchapartand1⁄2offthehead.Thestickswillcreateadownwardangle,leavingthespaceoftwofingersabovetherim.

Quads

GripThefulcrumislocatedbetweenthethumbandtheindexfinger.Thisisthepointfromwhichthestickpivotsinyourhand.Thispivotpointshouldbelocatedattheoptimalbalancepointofthestick,whichisgenerallylocatedabout1/3upthelengthofthestickfromthebuttend.Therestofthefingersshouldbewrappednaturallyaroundthestick.Theyshouldbelooseandrelaxedbutcanneverleavethestick.

SetPositionTobeginwith,thequadsshouldbesetabout1to2inchesbelowthewaistline.Theappropriaterelaxedplayingpositioncanbefoundbystartingwithyourarmsrelaxedbyyoursides.Raisebothsticksuptorestapproximately½inchabovethesurfaceoftheheadoverdrums1and2.Theelbowsshouldhangnaturallyfromtheshoulder,notforcedinorout.Theforearmandstickshouldbothslope

downslightly.Ourdefaultposition,or“homebase”,isdefinedasmalletsoverdrums1and2.Wewillattackeverythingfromthispositionunlessotherwisespecified.PlayingZonesYourbeadsshouldalwaysbeapproximately2inchesfromtherim.Thesmallestdrum“spock”willbeplayeddirectlyinthecenter.Donotplayinthecenterondrums1through4,asitwillcreatea“thud”sound.

A“teedup”approachwillbeusedfortheouterdrums.Thisallowsnaturalarmmovementwhilekeepingthebeadsequidistantfromtherim.Noticethattheoutsidehandisslightlyfartherforwardwhenontheseoutsidedrums.

CrossoversAdvancedtenordrummingofteninvolvestrickystickingandaroundpatternsthatrequireonesticktobecrossedovertheother.Itisimportanttomaintainsoundquality,technique,andheightswhileperformingcrossovers.Therearetwotypesofcrossovers:

Thethumbcrossoverisperformeddirectlyatthethumbsorfulcrum.Thisisusedforsmallercrossoversbetweentwoadjacentdrums. Thewristcrossoverisperformeddirectlywherethewristturnstoexecuteastroke.Thisisusedforlargercrossoversbetweendrums1-2drumsapart.

Bass Drum

Grip Thefulcrumislocatedbetweenthethumbandtheindexfinger.Thebuttofthestickshouldlineupwiththebottomofyourhand.Thefingersshouldbewrappednaturallyaroundthestick.Theyshouldbelooseandrelaxedbutcanneverleavethestick.

PlayingpositionFromarelaxedstandingposition,withyourarmshangingatyourside,raiseyourforearmsuntiltheyareparalleltotheground.Yourhandshouldbeanextensionofyourforearm,neitherbreakinginorout,upordown.Thebeadofthemalletshouldbeinthecenterofthedrumhead,about1⁄2aninchawayfromthesurface.Itisveryimportanttoalwaysadjustthedrumtoyou,andnotviceversa.Yourhandshouldbeasclosetherimaspossiblewithouttouching.

RotationUnlikeasnaredrum,thestrokeusedtoplaythebassdrumisinitiatedbyarotationofthewrist,asifturningadoorknob.SplitsAlsounlikeasnaredrum,bassdrummersplaypartsthataresplitacrossallofthebassdrums.Outofanentiremeasure,yourpartmightbejusttoplayonthe‘and’ofbeat2.Inordertoplayaccurately,yourmostimportanttoolisyourfeet.Ifyouaremarkingtimeormarching,keepingyourfeetintimeandplayingwiththemisthesecrettobeingafantasticbassdrumplayer.Notation

Cymbals Grip

SetPositionThispositionisusedwhenthebandordrumlineisstandingatasetposition,andalsotobeginflipsfrom.Startbylettingyourarmshangdownatyoursides.Slightlybendyourelbowsandsetyourpalmssothattheyarefacingyourthigh.Inthisposition,thecymbalsmustremainflatatalltimes.VerticalPositionYourarmsfromtheshouldertotheelbowshouldbeleveltotheground.Fromthewristtotheelbowshouldbeapproximatelyata45-degreeangletowardseachother.Thecymbalsshouldbe2-3inchesapartwiththeknotsofthecymbalsinlinewithyoureyes.Toforcethecymbalstobeparallelyoumustbeabletoseetheinsidefaredgeofthecymbal.

HorizontalPositionStartwiththecymbalsinlinewithyourbellybutton,withtherighthandontop,therightsideofthecymbaltilteddown.Yourtophandwillnotrestonthetopofyourlefthand.Thereshouldbe1-2fingerwidthbetweenthecymbals.Everythingplayedfromhorizontalpositionisplayedwiththetilt.

CrashTogetthebestpossiblesound,weperform‘flams’withourcrashes.Toprepareforthecrash,openthecymbalsuptoan“A.”Todothis,simplybreakatthewristslightlysothatthefingertipsformahousetop,or“A”withthetopedgeofthecymbals.Then,breakthewristbacksothecymbalsforma“V”withthebottompartofthepalm.

Fromhere,youwillreturntothe“A”position,whilecrashingthecymbals.Thecrashhitsatthebottomthenpushesthroughtothetopandopensbackuptotheoriginal“A”position.Tofinish,returntoplayingposition.OtherCymbalSoundsTherearemanysoundsthatwewillplayoncymbals.Thesesoundswillbediscussedandtaughtindetailduringclinicsandcamps.Hereistheterminologyyouwillneedtoknow:-crash -chokecrash-hi-hats -sizzles-scrapes/zings -tingsVisualsThecymbalplayerisabigcontributortotheoverallvisualaspectofthedrumline.Forcymbalplayers,themostbasicvisualelementisthecymbalflip.Tocompletea“flip-up”youmuststartwithyourcymbalsatsetposition.Initiatetheflipupwithanoutwardtwistofthewristwhilesimultaneouslybringingyourarmsforwardandup.Allowyourarmstotakeastraightpathwayup.Uponcompletionoftheflip,youwillbeinplayingposition.A“flip-down”istheexactreverseoftheflipup.Notation
