President’s Message

It is an honor to welcome you to the 42nd Annual Conference of the North American Thermal Society (NATAS) in Santa Fe, NM. I hope all of you have a chance to look around this beautiful, and historic, city during your time here before or after the conference. I also hope that you find this conference useful in your professional endeavors.

The meeting was organized by Conference Chair Sindee Simon and Technical Program Chair Yung Koh, both from Texas Tech University. The number of technical papers presented is almost 200 to be presented over the course of 3 days. I personally thank both of them for their tireless effort on behalf of the meeting. These two jobs often thankless tasks, and certainly feel free to congratulate both Sindee and Yung on their efforts when you see them in Santa Fe.

One special symposium deserves mention; a session organized on behalf of Stephen Cheng of the University of Akron. Stephen’s work is well-known not only in thermal analysis, and we are honored to be able to give him this well-deserved tribute. In other honors, NATAS award winners include

1) Sindee Simon of Texas Tech University (NATAS Award for Outstanding Achievement, sponsored by Mettler-Toledo);

2) Chris Li of Drexel (NATAS Fellow, sponsored by Netzsch Instruments North America) 3) Maria LaTorre of General Electric Global Research (NATAS Outstanding Service Award,

sponsored by Netzsch Instruments North America). 4) Yatze Zhu of Tufts University (NATAS Student Award, sponsored by SETARAM)

In addition, seven student travel awards sponsored by NATAS and TAFDV were given to help defray the costs of attending NATAS.

I want to say something about our vendors. Without vendors, this conference and this society would not exist, so I encourage you to seek out our vendors and interact with them. We form partnerships with our vendors in many different ways, some examples include website, conference presentations, lunches, receptions and joint advertising. As a Society, we are always looking for ways for our vendors to help make our Society stronger, so please whether you are a vendor or an attendee, don’t hesitate to contact me with ideas.

As you enjoy the conference, please consider becoming active in the Society as a volunteer. We are always looking for capable and committed people to help run the Society. Thermal analysis is central to much of our professional lives, and your talents would be welcome. Good luck, and don’t ever hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Giant Polyhedra and Giant Surfactants based on Nano-atoms: Tuning from Crystals, to Quasicrystals, to Frank-Kasper Phases:

An Interconnection between Soft and Hard Matters

Stephen Cheng University of Akron [email protected]

ABSTRACT In order to create new functional materials for advanced technologies, both precisely control over functionality and their hierarchical structures and orders are vital for obtaining the desired properties. Among all the giant molecules, giant polyhedra are a class of materials which are utilized via deliberately placing precisely functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and fullerene (C60) molecular nano-particles (MNPs) (so-called “nano-atoms”) at the vertices of a polyhedron. Giant surfactants are polymer tail-tethered “nano-atoms” where the two components have drastic chemical differences to impart amphiphilicity. These giant polyhedra and giant surfactants capture the essential structural features of their small-molecule counterparts in many ways but possess much larger sizes, and therefore, they are recognized as size-amplified versions of those counterparts. One of the most illustrating examples is a series of novel giant tetrahedral and giant surfactants which possessing precisely-defined amphiphilic MNPs with different geometric combinations. With both geometrical and chemical symmetry breakings, these giant tetraphedra and surfactants perform as building blocks to construct when specific interactions are introduced, these polyhedral and surfactants are functioned as building blocks to construct into hierarchical ordered structures. A range of ordered super-lattice structures of this class of materials: crystals, quasicrystals and Frank-Kasper phases have been investigated in the condensed bulk state and thin films, reveals evidently the interconnections between soft matters and hard matters in sharing their common structures and fundamental knowledge.

Nanoparticle Diffusion in a Polymer Matrix

Gary Grest Sandia National Laboratories

[email protected]

ABTRACT

The addition of nanoparticles to a polymer matrix can significantly improve the thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of the composite. Experimentally it has been found that the viscoelastic response, which is relevant for processing, of the composite can increase or decrease depending on the size of the nanoparticle and the nature of the interaction between the nanoparticle and the surrounding polymer matrix, Using equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, the diffusivity of nanoparticles in weakly interacting mixtures of nanoparticles and polymer melts and viscosity of the mixture are determined as a function of the size of the nanoparticles in mixtures with unentangled and entangled polymers. These simulations clearly show that the dynamics of these composites have two very different classes of behavior depending on size of the nanoparticle. For nanoparticles smaller than the polymer entanglement mesh size, relaxation times and their diffusivities are completely described by the local, Rouse dynamics of the polymer chains. Analogous to solvent molecules, small nanoparticles act akin to plasticizers and reduce the viscosity of a polymer melt. However for larger nanoparticles, which are comparable to the entanglement mesh size, the nanoparticles are significantly slowed by chain entanglements, and is not describable by the Stokes-Einstein relationship. For entangled polymer melts there is an additional effect of the nanoparticles due to the release of topological constraints. Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program laboratory managed and operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-AC04-94AL85000

The Physical Chemistry of Soft Matter: Interrogation using Calorimetry

Sindee Simon

Texas Tech University [email protected]

ABTRACT The use of calorimetry and thermal analysis to interrogate the physical chemistry of polymers and soft matter will be discussed. Particular focus will be placed on recent work in our laboratory dealing with the influence of nanoconfinement on polymerization kinetics, as well as the effects of synthesis under nanoconfinement on polymer properties. In the case of step-growth polymerization of cyanate esters and free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate, we find enhanced reactivity with decreasing nanopore size. On the other hand, in the ring-opening polymerization of dicyclopentadiene, we find reduced reactivity and the presence of a side reaction not present in the bulk system. The results can generally be explained and modeled by competition between changes in local packing and diffusivity under confinement coupled with entropic and surface effects. A related area of research concerns changes in the calorimetric glass transition temperature for polymers confined to nanoscale dimensions, including recent measurements on single thin films using chip calorimetry. The influence of substrate interactions, free surfaces, and molecular stiffness on changes in Tg will be discussed in the context of unanswered questions in the field.
