Material properties and imperfections are a major in-fluencing factor for the behavior of components un-der operational loads and for the lifetime of compo-nents and installations. Characterization and imag-ing of material properties on multiple length scales isan essential tool in studies of material behavior un-der the expected loads and of damage mechanismand progression. The Department NDT and Materi-als Characterization with its equipment and exper-tise can study and characterize different materialproperties down to the nm-scale range. The knowl-edge gained through characterization and imagingcan be applied to optimize material properties andfabrication processes, and will contribute to the iden-tification of causes for component failures.
The department's laboratories are accredited ac-cording to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for differentNDT methods (UT, RT, VT, MT, and PT), metallogra-phy, and electron microscopy. The department alsoholds accreditation according to DIN EN ISO/IEC17020:2012 as inspection body typeAfor determina-tion of conformity with requirements of the High Pres-sure Gas Pipeline Ordinance (Gashochdrucklei-tungsverordnung - Gas HDrLtgV).
