The austenitic stainless steel rectangular hollow section is a very useful constructionmaterial and has many structural purposes. The combination of good bending andtorsional properties in the hollow section, good mechanical qualities, very goodductility in low temperatures and good corrosion resistance, gives potential for thisproduct to be utilized for structural purposes. The austenitic stainless steel has theability to work harden when it is cold-formed. Work hardening can be observed asenhanced values in the yield- and tensile strength, but also some decreased valuein ductility. With a suitable cold-forming process the mechanical strength values canbe enhanced to some degree, without decreasing the ductility significanly.

The enhanced strength values have not been fullyutilized when using cold-formed hollow sections instructures, because the calculation rules have nottaken into account the potential extra strengthachieved as a concequence of the cold-forming.The calculation rules are mainly based on the nominalvalues of the strip in the annealed condition, which

means that the advantages of cold-forming havenot been utilised. Below in table 1 is shown theminimum guaranteed proof stress and tensilestrength values of finished Stala 350 Hollow Sections.The mechanical values in higher temperatures isshown in figure 2.

Resistance Values of Standard and

Stala 350 Hollow Sections

Tables 3 and 4 show the resistance values of theprofiles. The resistance values are calculated basedon formulas given in Eurocode 3 part 1.4 (Generalrules, supplementary rules for stainless steels). Theresistance value is given with material safety factorM value of 1,0.

Two strength classes are used for calculation ofresistances:

1) strength class based on yield strength fy = 220N/mm2 (Standard Stainless Steel Hollow Section).

2) strength class based on yield strength fy=350N/nm2 (Stala 350).The values are calculated based on the yield strengthvalues given above and the value of the elasticitymodulus E of 200 000 N/mm2.

Example 1

For the design there has been selected a profile ofdimension 150 x 150 x 6, with a weight of 27.36kg/m. According to table 3 the compressionresistance N is 739.92 kN and bending resistanceMy in both direction is 39.57 kNm, when yieldstrength of 220 N/mm2 is utilized. If higher strengthof 350 N/mm2 is possible to utililize the profile of150 x 150 x 5 could be used as substitute (N=992.47kN, My=45.83 kNm) and the length weight isreduced to a value of 22.40 kg/m. The materialsaving is 4.96 kg/m (18 %).

The resistance values shown in tables 3 and 4 canbe used to estimate resistance to carry the loadingopposed to it. The two strengths give a possibilityto make a comparison if the higher strength givessome advantage in the structure´s weight by reducingthe material thickness or outside dimensions.

For the design there has been selected a profile ofdimension 200 x 100 x 10, with a weight of 41.65kg/m. According to table 4 the compressionresistance N is 1156.46 kN and bending resistanceMy is 71.88 kNm, when yield strength of 220 N/mm2

is utilized. If higher strength of 350 N/mm2 is possibleto utililize the profile of 200 x 100 x 6 could be usedas substitute (N=1177.15 kN, My=74.64 kNm) andthe length weight is reduced to a value of 27.36kg/m. The material saving is 14.29 kg/m (36 %).
