Dr. David E. DanielThe MTBC Tech Titans Hall of Fame recognizes a visionary from the DFW Metroplex for outstanding leadership in assisting, advancing and accelerating the performance of the technology industry and/or adoption of technology in North Texas. These accomplishments must span more than one decade and reach far beyond the individual’s company or organization.

The 2015 Tech Titan Hall of Fame inductee is Dr. David E. Daniel, deputy chancellor of the University of Texas System and immediate past-president of the University of Texas at Dallas. During his ten years at UT Dallas, one billion dollars of construction has added or renovated more than three million square feet of space on campus. Research expenditures have doubled, and 17 new degree programs have been added. The student population has grown by 64% to almost 24,000 students.

Dr. Daniel has been a strong and vocal advocate for UT Dallas to become the next Tier 1 research university in Texas and first in North Texas. Dr. Daniel’s work on legislation to reward research productivity and match private funding led him to be named a finalist for “Texan of the Year” by The Dallas Morning News in 2009.

With a commitment to the technology community, the university has engaged the region’s tech companies through corporate briefings, active memberships in many tech organizations and service on boards and commissions. Faculty members provide research to the industry and students are given opportunities for jobs with those companies.

Daniel is an engineer by profession having earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in engeering from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Daniel’s work in engeering has been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers, which awarded him its highest honor for papers published in its journals, the Norman Medal, and on two separate occasions its second highest honor, the Croes Medal.

In 2000, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the nation’s most prestigious honor recognizing engineering achievement. In 2009 Daniel served as president of The Academy of Medicine, Engineering, and Science of Texas (TAMEST), which is comprised of all Texas residents who have won Nobel Prizes or been elected to one of the National Academies.

EntertainmentKevin Delaney is an artist and educator based in Little Rock, Arkansas. He has been performing since he was a child and teaching since 2003. He has been creating science-based theatre and musical pieces for schools, libraries, zoos and museums since 2009. In 2014 he began appearing as the resident science educator for the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He currently serves as the director of visitor experience at the Museum of Discovery in Little Rock, where he continues to entertain and engage visitors in science, technology, engineering and math—except not so much math.

Make a difference in STEM education today for tomorrow’s workforceIt’s no secret that the high-tech industry is facing a critical shortage of qualified talent. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-related jobs in Texas are projected to increase 22 percent by 2018—but only 12 percent of the degrees earned by today’s college graduates are in STEM fields.

Fostering students’ interest in STEM education is vital to our future. Without an adequate, trained workforce for the more than 750,000 jobs that will need to be filled, the DFW business community will miss out on the significant growth opportunities enabled by these tech jobs.

What can you do?STEMfire is a online database that connects industry professionals directly with K-12 educators seeking guidance to incorporate real-life STEM examples into lesson plans or need volunteers for classroom and school events. STEMfire allows professionals to choose the opportunities most appealing to their own interests, inspiring students in their chosen area of expertise. Volunteers chose when, how and how much time they spend volunteering.

Our goal is to register 500 professional volunteers to support North Texas school districts in STEM education, enhancing the profession for generations to come. Even if a student never works directly in a job requiring specialized technical knowledge, the cultivation of an educated workforce is priceless.

Support STEM education through the MTBC STEM Partnership FundMTBC’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) initiatives continue to improve tomorrow’s

technology workforce. Our goal as the largest pure technology association in Texas is to help ensure that our high-tech community has the talent it needs to sustain and innovate our high-tech economy. In order to achieve this goal, it is crucial that we find a way to increase both the number and the diversity of local students in the STEM pipeline, while also improving the quality of their learning. We need the financial support of the high-tech community to make this happen.

Your donation to the STEM fund – both as an individual and from your high-tech company – supports a variety of nationally recognized STEM best practices in North Texas, including the Tech Titans of the Future High School and University level awards, the MTBC STEM Robotics project and our efforts to support STEM programs with metroplex ISDs. Our periodic STEM summits have already inspired several school districts to completely revamp their STEM curriculums by working directly with local high-tech companies. Together as a community, we are starting to make a difference. But we have more work to do.

To raise much needed funds in support of our mission, the MTBC will sell glow necklaces at the Tech Titans gala. The minimum donation for a glow necklace will is $50, and you can proudly wear your glow necklace at the gala to show your support of STEM education and the STEM partnership fund.

15 Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to Zachary Oldham, the recipient of this year’s MTBC $5,000 Florence Shapiro STEM Scholarship. Oldham is a recent graduate of Plano Senior High. In the fall, he will attend the University of Texas at Dallas, where he plans to study engineering. Oldham applied to four different universities and was accepted to all of them. He chose UTD because of its strong engineering program.

Oldham was an honors student who graduated with a 3.9 grade point average. He was an active member of the National Honor Society from the ninth grade and was one of only about 30 students named to the Who’s Who at Plano Senior High earlier this year.

In February, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He has participated in Boy Scouts since first grade and is a member of the Order of the Arrow – the National Honor Society for Scouts. He has held many leadership positions as a Scout. Oldham also is a steward of his community. He has volunteered at various neighborhood events and with a local literacy program.

As if all of these activities didn’t occupy enough of his time, Oldham was a percussionist in the high school band and also held various part-time positions at the ArtCentre of Plano.

The MTBC established the Florence Shapiro STEM scholarship in 2013 and named it for the local former senator who spent years advocating for STEM education in the Texas legislature. It is awarded annually to a local graduating high school senior pursuing a degree in a STEM discipline at a local four-year college or university.

Dr. John RandallPresident of Zyvex Labs and Adjunct Professor, UT DallasJohn Randall has more than 30 years of experience in micro- and nano-fabrication. He joined Zyvex in March of 2001 and was instrumental in developing and spinning out two successful nanotechnology companies, Zyvex Technologies and Zyvex Instruments (now part of DCG Systems). Before Zyvex, Randall worked for 15 years at Texas Instruments where he worked in high-resolution processing for integrated circuits, MEMS, and quantum effect devices. Prior to working at TI, Randall worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory on ion beam and x-ray lithography. He has 97 articles published in refereed journals. He has a BS, MS, and PhD all in electrical engineering from the University of Houston, where he was elected distinguished engineering alumni in 2010. Randall was also elected distinguished member of the Technical Staff while at Texas Instruments, is a senior member of the IEEE and is a Fellow of the Society of the AVS.

David E. Daniel became president of UT Dallas in 2005, after serving on the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin, and as Dean of Engineering at the University of Illinois. In the past eight years, UT Dallas has tripled research expenditures, initiated over $700 million in new construction, added more than 30 degree programs and raised more than $240 million. Daniel holds bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees from UT Austin, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Society of Civil Engineers, and holds their highest honors. He chaired a review of facts surrounding the levee failures during Hurricane Katrina for ASCE and took part in an NAE investigation of the Deepwater Horizon incident. He serves on the board of Sandia National Laboratory.

Tanis CornellOwner, Dallas Market, EWF InternationalTanis Cornell leads and facilitates Peer Advisory Boards for female business owners and executives. Prior to launching her own business in August of 2013, she spent 30 years in senior management positions within the technology sector holding Vice-President roles for telecom companies WilTel and Level 3 Communications. She was a partner and Senior Vice President for software company PhaseWare, and led one of the largest strategic service provider relationships for NetApp, a Fortune 500 data management company. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the MTBC Board of Directors, is on the Business Advisory Council for Oklahoma Christian University, and served several terms on the International Board of Sales & Marketing Executives International.

Prior to joining Ericsson, Hyacinth held various positions at Nortel Networks (including VP Corporate Development and President of Nortel Ventures LLC), SaskTel and Telecom Canada. Hyacinth has led the execution of over 65 acquisitions, equity investments, venture capital fund investments, joint ventures, spin-outs, divestitures, and strategic commercial alliances, in transactions valued at over $15B. Hyacinth holds a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta and an MBA from the University of Regina. Hyacinth is a past board member/observer and advisory board member in several venture-backed companies and venture capital firms.

Stacie HyattVice President, Sales, Marketing and Support for Plexon, Inc.Stacie brings more than 15 years of experience in the medical and research technology arena to the table, and. Prior to Plexon, she has worked for industry giants including Medtronic and St. Jude Medical, as well as successful early stage and start-up companies, primarily in the cardiac, neurosurgical and wellness disciplines. Her geographic experience spans the globe, including having worked for several years in Europe. Ms. Hyatt earned her Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering from Texas A&M University and an MBA with a triple focus in marketing, operations and health care from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Special Interest ForumsThe MTBC continues to develop targeted and personalized special interest forums to address the changing interests and needs of our members.

Business Intelligence/Analytics Forum brings together functional and technical experts to advance the knowledge and understanding of how data is used, identify solutions and use cases, and encourage the growth of the business intel-ligence community. The question becomes what to do with the data once it arrives at its designated landing point. What to do with the information, protect it against cyber attacks, and how to analyze it to make the every-day decision-making process more strategic and critically successful are driving the needs for industry experts to share their solutions.

The Cloud Computing Forum brings together those involved in cloud computing and helps them align their business strategy with opportunities presented by the cloud, including cost reduction, creating greater efficiencies and learning best practices. Members come from all facets of the Cloud: IT leadership, infrastructure, software, platform, and advisory services.

The Cybersecurity Forum is a community that will educate its members through insight and knowledge about key issues in information security and risk management. By collaborating on best practices, we can help develop solutions that meet the business needs of its members. Its mission is to create an information security community that provides a place for thought leadership, education, industry development and community service.

Design & Manufacturing Forum targets multiple industry sectors including military, medical, industrial and telecom and focuses programs on design, manufacturing, emerging technologies, electronics, plastics and metal fabrication. Attend-ees include engineers and engineering managers, researchers and supply chain managers.

Health Technology Forum connects companies and encourages the development, knowledge creation, identification of solutions, and promotion of technologies focused on health outcomes to highlight the current trends and shape future trends for the Dallas ecosystem and the State of Texas generally. This group is driven by companies actively engaged in the development of health technologies like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, software applications, wearables and Health IT solutions.

The Internet of Things (IoT) Forum connects companies and encourages the development, knowledge creation, identification of solutions and promotion of IoT to highlight the current trends and shape future trends in its use. The proliferation of machines talking to machines will continue to explode in coming years. The greater use of technology in automobiles, online banking, supply chain management of inventory in a retail store are just a few examples. The tech industry should share ideas, exchange information, identify solutions and build a network of industry experts to further the understanding and implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in North Texas.

Human Resources Forum provides MTBC members’ human resources professionals a resource to learn about trends in areas of shared interest such as recruitment, retention, compliance, benefits, etc., to be able to adapt to new laws, regula-tions and technologies. This quarterly forum allows local HR professionals to network with each other and receive com-munity updates. Only open to HR professionals.
