My Expectations
Expect to move and interact.
We don’t have all the answers - that’s a good thing!
What if . . . ?
Focus on “how can we make this work for us” instead of “this won’t work for us.”
Parking Lot ideas - details that we’ll save for next time
Let’s not reinvent the wheel.
![Page 5: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

“Futurist”
TEDxGrandRapids
TEDxGrandRapids- Sheryl Connelly from the Ford Motor Company 1st Speaker on “Uncertainty”- Japanese earthquake & Iceland volcano - why were these so disruptive when we knew what was going to happen?- Historical models - nice and mostly reliable, but give us a false sense of security- Meeting at FMC in 2003 (oil $30/barrel, SUV’s selling very well, economy doing well). What would happen if . . . oil $100+/barrel, slow prolonged downturn in the economy . . ?- Innovation doesn’t happen until the “wild card” comes out because our “box” is very comfortable.- Purpose of today - “What if . . ?”
![Page 6: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
What is our “box” in education?- Think of 5 ____ and write them in your notes- Pair with someone else- Share with the group
Are these “mandated”, “tradition” or “convenient”?
![Page 7: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Our education “box”
What parameters (real or imagined) do we deal with in education?
Example 1: School from 7:30AM to 2:30PM
Example 2: Testing = proficiency
Brainstorm 10
Text in your “best”
What is our “box” in education? In other words, what kinds of parameters (real or imagined) cause us to teach or operate the way we do?- On your paper brainstorm 10 parameters that affect how your district operates.- When I give the ok, you will text in your “best”
![Page 8: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
our education “box”
Look at our answers. Are these parameters mandated, tradition, or convenience?
![Page 9: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Gov. Snyder’s White Paper
A few weeks ago Governor Snyder came out with a “white paper” on his educational plan. This is not law or a mandate but it lets us know what he is thinking about in terms of education reform.
Let’s look at the parts that refer specifically to technology in the classroom and ask a few “What if’s”.
![Page 10: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The Nerd’s main ideas
Look at the * paragraphs on pages 7 and 8.
Main ideas?
When I give you the ok - text in the one that would affect you the most.
Let’s dissect this - what does he mean?
![Page 11: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Any Time, Any Place, Any Way, any pace
What might “4xAny” look like for ___ ?
Administrators
IT Coordinators
Curriculum Directors/Teachers
- Write down 5 things that would apply to your job or the people you are responsible for.- Share that with others in the room who have your same responsibility- Move to a table with others of different responsibilities - share with them you PofV.
![Page 12: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Think Different
Lead in to the “what might 4xAny look like for . . . ?”
- This is outside our educational box.- We have a tendency in education to put up walls and focus on why things won’t work when we hear something new or different. In this next part, let’s just play “What if . . ?”
![Page 13: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

Railroads vs. cars
What should schools, classrooms and learning look like in the 21st Century?
![Page 15: Tech Steering Commitee Meeting - May 2011](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051514/54834de5b47959000d8b4a54/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

MC Student Survey

408 students, grades 8-12, surveyed
Prefer a normal or blended schedule?
45% would take a “blended”, after-school course if offered.
After-school sports was the biggest reason for not choosing a blended schedule.

Next steps
Where do we go from here?
Pilots/Betas?
PD?
Infrastructure?
What could you do in your district next year to help teachers get prepared for this?
Example: When Pennfield Schools went 1:1 they decided that in Year 1 every teacher would create a Moodle course for each class and post all their assignments online. In Year 2 they would start to use different activities to engage kids in online learning.
