SESSION PARTNER:

It’s no secret that Waterloo Region tech has grown leaps and bounds in the past 15+ years.

We are the home of tech game changers—satellite communications, code compilers, search, wireless mobile, flat panel screens, quantum computing, wearables and now biosensor gesture controls—innovations and markets that are commonplace worldwide.

We see it in the quality and quantity of our companies, in the calibre of the visitors we attract to the region and in increased global recognition—like recently being named one of eight (and Canada’s only) GoogleTech Hubs for Entrepreneurs. Or how about ranking in the world’s top 20 tech ecosystems – right up there with cities such as NY, London, Paris, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Melbourne and Bangalore all with populations counting in the millions, and we count ours by the thousands.

We’re running with the big dogs … but how do we keep it up? We need to be sure to sustain momentum. We need to stay ahead of the game. That’s where Rethink. Reinvent. Reconnect. comes in. Recognizing the importance of not getting too comfortable, TLC 2014 is about reconnecting the players (that’s you!) to rethink the way we do things and reinvent how we make Waterloo Region the best tech ecosystem in the world. We have an exciting day planned. If you need anything during the conference, just look for someone in a blue Communitech t-shirt; a member of our team will be happy to help! Enjoy the day!

SCOTT BEDBURYCEO, BrandstreamScott Bedbury became one of the world’s most recognized brand building leaders by helping take Nike and Starbucks to iconic positions during pivotal growth periods. Since leaving the client side he estab-lished Brandstream, a global consulting firm in Seattle with clients that span Fortune 200 companies and freshly minted startups, and published A New Brand World.

Bedbury joined Nike in 1987 as Worldwide Advertising Director where he helped move Nike from an $800 million elite aspirational sports brand for young males to a multi-billion dollar more inclusive and inspi-rational brand for all. Scott’s first effort to expand brand relevancy was to work with a 35 person-adver-tising agency in Portland to create the “Just Do It” campaign, which remains at the brand’s core 25 years later.

In 1995 Bedbury left Nike to join Starbucks, then a small regional coffee company in Seattle, as its Chief Marketing Officer. Beginning with a $2.5 million marketing budget and a few hundred stores in 14 US markets, Bedbury and CEO Howard Schultz set out to redefine one of the oldest commodities on earth as an experience, rather than just a product.

CULTURE AS STRATEGY BERKLEY ROOMDAVE CAPUTO, CEO OF SANDVINECorporate culture ultimately describes and governs the norms of how team members work with and treat each other. It is not separate from a company’s business strate-gy, but completely inter-meshed with it.

During this session Dave Caputo will share his experience on the engineering of the “Sandvine Way.”

Sandvine has engineered a corporate culture that promotes success, risk taking and fosters an environment that team members are excited and proud to be part of. Team members are consistently living, breathing and communicating the Sandvine Way. It is not simply a list of eight tenets, it’s a key part of the company’s success.

SESSIONS ...

CHANGE LEADERSHIP BALLROOM DDR. ANITA SANDS Originally trained as an atomic physicist, Dr. Anita Sands has spent the last de-cade wondering what actually happens when unstoppable forces, such as major technological trends meet immovable objects, such as large multinational corpo-rations. Having architected, driven and delivered major transformation initiatives within several large companies, she’ll discuss the challenges of change and how organizations can strive to become, and remain, innovative in “everything they do”. Her topic will discuss best practices borne from both her operational experi-ence and also her current role as a board director of a F500 technology company. While on sabbatical from being the “resident anarchist”, she is also working on a book the examines the impact of technologies such as mobile, social, cloud and data on large enterprises and the traditional paradigms of operating models, organizational effectiveness and leadership that are all under threat as a result.

NO BS MEETINGS BALLROOM B/CRON NEUMANN, CEO OF VISTASHIFTIn almost every meeting we hit a point where we have to ask... what is the best way to solve this challenge? Brainstorming, used since the 1950’s, remains the most widely used approach for generating alternative solutions. In today’s fast-paced and uber-connected world, BrainStorming just doesn’t work. It’s time for a new approach to problem-solving.

Ron Neumann, Founder & CEO of VistaShift Inc. will explain why BrainStorming is proven to be ineffective, while offering a new academically researched and tested method for generating better quality alternative solutions. He will outline a step-by-step process for conducting your own “No-BS” meeting, demonstrating how to leverage the variety of perspectives that exist within all business eco-systems. His new approach is simple, fun and can be easily applied to our everyday challenges.

Whether you are a CEO or manager of a small or large business, make sure your next meeting isn’t full of the same old “BS.”

SESSIONS ...CYBER SECURITY BALLROOM AJ. PAUL HAYNES OF ESENTIRE & DR. CÉDRIC JEANNOT OF I THINK SECURITY LTD.2014 is quickly being recognized as the year that cyber security moved from the boardroom to a more operational standpoint. With a plethora of highly publicized breaches and changes in online security standards, businesses are taking notice at how quickly the cyber security landscape is shifting.

Join J. Paul Haynes, eSentire CEO, and Dr. Cédric Jeannot, I Think Security Ltd. CEO, for a look at the cyber security landscape. Using real life examples, this session offers a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at the inner workings, trends and effects that cyber attacks have on businesses. Furthermore, this session explains how cyber security has moved from a board level issue to operational executive issue, with a focus on the execution of cyber security that follows well publicized law suits and regulatory penalties.

Enterprise leaders, through a combination of security technology and human exper-tise, will gain a clear understanding of the cyber security landscape, what to look for and how to act in order to minimize their threat profile.
