ENRICHING PRODUCTS THROUGH SOFTWARE AND DESIGN

On January 16th, Mjølner’s board of directors appointed me

the new CEO of Mjølner Informatics, following co-founder

and long-time CEO, Jørgen Lindskov Knudsen.

The transition was not abrupt. It has been an ongoing pro-

cess, and I am excited to take over the role and strengthen

Mjølner’s vision to be a valuable and business-generating

partner in software development and design.

Mjølner’s mission is to enrich the products of our clients

through innovative and solid software and design. A mis-

sion I will strengthen in the years to come.

This is my first editorial for Mjølner Update. Fittingly, this

issue captures the essence of where Mjølner is heading.

On the following pages, you will learn how a big data system

increases the value of Ogin’s innovative wind turbines.

Read about our transition in leadership and learn how you

can enrich your service by means of iBeacon technology.

Furthermore, we are proud to share TouchGFX’s response at

this year’s Embedded World. Last, but certainly not least,

we invite all to join our innovation workshop and hackathon

to invent the future digital services of shared economy.

Best Regards,

Brian Gottorp Jeppesen, CEO

on trust, accountability, and a willingness to challenge the

status quo. This made us able to not only solve the main

challenge, but to redefine it all together.

The project has even led to several changes in the turbine

software – the turbine’s “firmware” and the very backbone

of the operation of Ogin’s turbine.

It was a pleasure working with Ogin. They allowed us to

learn, while keeping an open mind and letting everybody

benefit from the partnership. The market’s recognition

of the system has been extremely inspiring to our contin-

ued collaboration and a huge pat on the back to the team.

- Nikolaj Borchorst, Senior UX Consultant, Mjølner Informatics

Ogin’s SCADA-system is a great example of what can be

achieved in an agile partnership with a user-driven innova-

tion approach.

We were able to not only solve the challenge at hand, but

the actual challenge overall.

With a customer-driven innovation approach, Ogin and Mjølner havecreated an acclaimed SCADA system that helps maximize turbine uptimeand streamline service.

Ogin is an innovative American wind turbine manufacturer

determined to transform the wind power industry through

clever design and technology. The company was recently

featured in the acclaimed magazine, Fast Company.

From Software to Business Development

Initially, Ogin wanted a software partner in Mjølner. It quick-

ly became evident that Ogin had the potential to obtain a

unique market position that Mjølner could help them realize.

Mjølner brought a customer-centric perspective to the

table and we created room for them to challenge us on

industry-wide assumptions. Mjølner’s involvement and the

SCADA team’s achievements have proven to be very valuable

for us in realizing our vision.

- Lars Andersen, CEO, Ogin

Best in the Business

Ogin’s team of developers have many years of experience

from within the wind industry.

They know how difficult it is to arrive from vast amounts of

data to actually creating value by presenting this data in a

way that empowers users. Be it by preemptive maintenance,

streamlining reporting, or wind utilization optimization.

Visiting customers across the Americas and combining

expert knowledge within development, innovation, and

design, the team redefined the understanding of customers

and users and set a new standard. Not in their own words,

but in those of Ogin’s customers:

I can knowingly say that this system is state-of-the-art. It is

After more than 25 years, JørgenLindskov Knudsen passes on the CEO position to Brian Gottorp Jeppesen.

Jørgen Lindskov Knudsen has been a driving force behind

Mjølner since the beginning.

He has made Mjølner what it is today: A financially sound

and respected software and design consultancy, employing

more than 75 software, design, and business professionals.

The Time is Right

The now former CEO announced his decision on the 16th of

January and described the reasoning behind stepping down

in a speech at the transition reception on February 6th:

The time has now come to pass the baton. I am proud to

have helped create a dynamic IT company with a highly

qualified staff, which is in large the basis for Mjølner’s

success. I am proud of the company I pass on: Proud of the

culture, the workplace, and the business.

- Jørgen Lindskov Knudsen, Former CEO, Mjølner Informatics

Chair of the Board, Ole Lehrmann Madsen also spoke at the

reception thanking the former CEO for his dedicated work,

and confidently welcoming the new CEO.

New CEO: Brian Gottorp Jeppesen

As to Mjølner’s future, the newly appointed CEO says:

I will continue to develop Mjølner for the benefit of our

clients. With an outset in our highly qualified staff, we

will focus on developing services that support our clients’

businesses and become an even stronger partner in soft-

ware development and design.

- Brian Gottorp Jeppesen, CEO, Mjølner Informatics

Brian Gottorp Jeppesen began his career at Mjølner as

a Software Developer in 2003. He quickly moved on

to sales, and built Mjølner’s sales organization. In the

spring of 2013, he was appointed VP. A logical and strong

vantage point to taking over the role as CEO once the time

was right. That time has now come.

HOW iBEACONS COULD CHANGE THE WORLD – NOT JUST RETAIL

By all accounts, 2014 will be the year of the iBeacons. We have explored some of the possibilities thetechnology offers, and we see apotential going far beyond retail.

For some years now, users have enjoyed the improved

mobile experience that location-based, context-aware data

helps provide. The iBeacon technology, however, takes this

to another level.

Attention to Retail

So far, iBeacon technology has only been promoted and

used as a marketing tool in retail.

iBeacons are indeed well suited for enhancing the retail

industry. They can support every step in the shopping

process – from helping the retailer lure customers from the

street into the store to executing the final payment.

While we find the many possibilities within retail interes-

ting, our hope is to use this pioneering technology to do

more than boost upselling.

A Useful Internet of Things

In the context of our User Experience (UX) expertise, we

see countless, more experience-driven possibilities:

Imagine your computer starting as you enter your office buil-

ding, and turning off when you leave; your tablet guiding your

next museum visit; or an alarm going off if your car leaves

your driveway without you in it. These are just a few of the

promising ideas we see the technology driving.

-Kasper Svendsen, UX Consultant, Mjølner Informatics

With iBeacons, companies get an ideal opportunity to

enrich their products with useful services that interact

directly with end-users and anchor the use of their product.

Finding Ways to Inspire with iBeacon Technology

As part of our quest to find new and profitable ways of

utilizing iBeacons, we have collaborated with a school for

children with special needs.

Our goal is to help innovate the teaching methods applied

by focusing on exercise, cooperation, and play. The project

is only in its early phases, but it already looks promising.

TECH

iBeacons Benefits

iBeacons use the latest Bluetooth 4.0 LE technology to

send signals that trigger push actions on supported devices

(so far, Android KitKat and Jelly Bean, and iOS 7).

Triangulation between different beacons and four proxi-

mity levels micro-locates a device. This makes it possible

to trigger different actions depending on location.

iBeacons have a low power consumption. They can run up

to two years on the embedded battery.

iBeacon technology is responsive without your activation.

It works in the background while you take a phone call,

browse, or send a text.

Mjølner was invited by five market leaders to showcase TouchGFXat their Embedded World stands.A perfect platform for meeting potential clients and answeringtheir questions.

This year’s record-breaking Embedded World ended with a

whopping 26,688 trade visitors from across the globe. Our

six representatives met the crowds at the stands of NXP

Semiconductors, STMicroelectronic, Rutoronik, Silicon

Labs, and EBV Elektronik.

We had three very busy days with customer meetings

stretching longer than the actual opening hours. In

order to answer the many questions from the crowd,

our engineers had to give our sales team a hand.

- Jørgen Mygind, Business Development Manager, TouchGFX

The visitors were a mixed bunch. Most of them, however,

represented international hardware companies wanting to

expand their customer base with TouchGFX.

A Known Name in the Embedded Industry

Our experience at this year’s Embedded World was in many

ways different from last year. Mainly because our hard

work has paid off and made TouchGFX a known name in

the industry.

Several visitors had heard about TouchGFX before and

wanted to experience the framework with their own eyes

and hands. The TouchGFX demo application and demo

board often exceeded their expectations and we went

home with a long list of potential new clients.
