Although I retired as Chairman of the Boardon 1st October, the Company very kindlyinvited me to fulfil the new role of Presidentso, in this role, which I am delighted to haveaccepted, and with my huge pride in ourfamily company, I will do all I can to promotethe success and good name of the Companyand help it to continue and remain true to itsestablished ideals in a fast changing world.

I am delighted to have handed thechairmanship to the highly successful AlexDorrian who has gained a great reputation inthe Aerospace and Defence Industry where hehad huge success as Chairman and ChiefExecutive of Thales UK. I am confident thatAlex and his team will steer an exciting butsteady course ahead and will ensure that wecontinue to adhere to the ethos and standardsmaintained by my father and by me and set bymy grandfather when he started the Companyfrom literally nothing 107 years ago in 1909.

I am, therefore, writing this to comment onsome of the events during my final months asChairman.

Thanks to the efforts of our wonderful staff, wehave continued to excel, and it was reallypleasing that at RIAT and Farnborough thisyear we were able to celebrate the work of ourteams ensuring the best C-130 availabilityever, with the result that the C-130 has beendesignated to continue in service until 2035.We particularly celebrated the 50 years of theC-130 in RAF Service making it their longestserving aircraft covering over 50% of the life of the RAF.

We were also proudly able to display oursuccess in being awarded our second Queen’sAward, this time for Enterprise in theInternational Trade category, and, just afterFarnborough, we were delighted to receive alarge order for our Land Systems Load Beds.We have also celebrated our huge continuingsuccess with our Boeing P8 tank manufacture.

Marshall Motor Group plc, in which we own a65% stake, doubled its size as a publiccompany following its recent acquisitions and I feel proud that we have been able to see itgrow up and find its own way in the world.Whatever the effect of Brexit on its market, our eye is on the long term.

The same long term vision is driving theexciting Wing and Cherry Hinton housingdevelopments on our land near the Airport. I am pleased that we are able to play our partin helping Cambridge City with its exciting longterm growth and we are determined that ourdevelopments will be of the highest standardpossible and highly desirable places to live.

I am extremely proud of our Long ServiceAwards which are built on our policy ofcontinuity and promoting from within, and ourApprentice Programmes which we havemaintained continuously since 1920.

Our Teamwork magazine, which was started in the Motor Group in 1972 by the late ColinMcCulloch, has continued to keep us all intouch with activities within the Group as weexpanded, and I am delighted that it hascontinued to fulfil this role so brilliantly.

We were delightedwith the recent visitof Her Majesty TheQueen to officiallyopen the newpremises of theEast Anglian AirAmbulance, located on ourairfield, which does such amazingly good workin saving lives and providing rapid help tothose in our communities who are hit by asudden accident or health crisis.

Our success is being achieved daily by all ourwonderful people who work ceaselessly toprovide superb service for all our customersand I am enormously grateful to all of you.

I have been lucky and privileged to have hadthe pleasure of working for the Group now for61 years. Much of the early part was spentbuilding up our Motor Group and then, for thelast 27 years, trying to guide our magnificentteams through many challenges andopportunities. I am delighted that we havecontinued to play a leading part in all theexciting industries with which we havebecome involved.

Thank you for all your support and all yourwonderful work. I look forward to a greatfuture for all of us.

Sir Michael Marshall, President

The President

On Wednesday, 13th July Her Majesty the Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke ofEdinburgh, visited Cambridge Airport officially toopen the new operating base for the East Anglian AirAmbulance. Also present for the opening in his roleas a pilot for the Air Ambulance, was His RoyalHighness The Duke of Cambridge.

Her Majesty and His Royal Highness arrived and

departed in a helicopter of the Royal Flight, returningto London immediately after visiting in time for HerMajesty to accept the resignation of former PrimeMinister, David Cameron and to appoint the newPrime Minister, Theresa May.

With Her Majesty on site, we were grantedpermission to fly the Royal Standard from the mainCompany flag pole during the visit, a rare honour.

A Flying Visit

Molly Rose, the sole surviving daughter of our founder, David Marshall, has died at the age of 95. In 1937Mrs Rose started her working life with the family business as an apprentice engineer. In 1942 she joined thewartime Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) as a pilot and became one of the ‘spitfire Women’ when she delivered273 of the fighters from aircraft factories to RAF units. Altogether, during the second world war, Mrs Rosedelivered 486 aircraft and flew 38 different aircraft types.

Post-war Mrs Rose settled in Oxford and sat as aMagistrate for the Bullingdon circuit and was later thechairman of the bench. She was an active charity fund-raiser and was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant forOxfordshire in 1983, and in 1990 was awarded an OBE.

In 2008 the service of the ‘Forgotten Pilots’ of the ATA wasformally recognised at a ceremony at No. 10 DowningStreet and Mrs Rose was presented, along with othersurvivors, with the ATA Veteran’s Badge.

Her wartime work was featured in the Festival ofRemembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 12th November.

I would like to start by thanking my father forall that he has done for the Company overmore than 60 years, during which time thebusiness has been transformed and wish himwell in his new role as President of the Group.

Since the last edition of Teamwork I wouldparticularly like to congratulate Daksh Guptaand the entire Motor Holdings plc team onthe successful acquisition of Ridgeway, thelargest ever acquisition by a Marshallbusiness which will now take their annualturnover to over £2 billion and the MotorGroup team to over 4,000 people. With thisnew acquisition, coupled with the SGSacquisition at the end of last year, the MMHteam is very focused on ensuring that thesignificantly enlarged business now runssmoothly as a single company.

At the same time, as many of you willalready know, Marshall Motor Group is alsoin the middle of a major investmentprogramme, upgrading and updating theirfacilities for a number of brands, includingthe Jaguar Land Rover dealership which isnearing completion in Cambridge.

At the end of April we achieved a resolution togrant planning permission on the Wingdevelopment which covers the land North ofNewmarket Road in Cambridge. Morerecently the Property Team has been workingclosely with MADG as they launch the initialconsultation on the new engine running baywhich will lead to a planning application in thenext few months. They are also in the processof tendering for a joint venture developmentpartner for the first phase of Wing.

The new engine running bay will be the mostadvanced example in the UK and Europe inrelation to noise reduction, which is especiallyimportant for Marshall given our proximity tothe City and our new developments. Theinvestment in the new engine running bayproject is a significant continuation of theinvestment programme which started with theupgrade of the runway and taxiways last yearwhich follow on from our firm commitment toinvest and build on our successfulCambridge-based businesses for the future.

In addition, the Property team is alsoprogressing a further proposal for thedevelopment of additional housing andschools to the South side of the airfield andwe are working closely with a neighbouringlandowner in this new development. It isamazing what such a small team has achievedso far, ably led by Richard Howe who, in aprevious life, managed and developed thecomplex Addenbrooke’s Hospital site.

In MADG, I am pleased to see our majorSpecial Mission Project progressing. This ispossibly the most ambitious project we haveever undertaken and, at its peak, the team hasincluded over 150 design engineers. Althoughnot without its challenges along the way, thisproject demonstrates the extraordinarybreadth of capability of our company and Iwould like to thank all of those who arecontinuing to work so hard on this complexand important project.

I would like to make special mention of ourreturn to the large civil aircraft market which isbeing led by Kevan Bishop. Kevan and histeam are making great inroads in bringingcustomers to our state-of-the-art paint facility, all on the back of a wonderful customer-drivenculture, achieving great quality and on-timedelivery.

Many of you will have seen or even met ournew Chief Financial Officer (CFO), SeanCummins, who has been getting out andabout to develop his understanding of thebusiness since he joined in the middle ofJuly. Filling the boots which Bill Dastur hasworn for the last 20 years, is a toughchallenge but Sean brings with him a hugeamount of experience as a CFO of variouspublic companies over the last 10 years.

A well-run finance team is right at the heartof any successful business and providesinvaluable tools which help drive thebusiness forward and I am delighted withthe work that is going on right across theGroup. Whilst waxing lyrical about financeand accounting it is unlikely to evokespontaneous applause from everyone, control of those functions is a vital necessity

and I’m verypleased with theprogress which wehave made in sucha short time.

The Great Place toWork scores haverecently come in. Whilst it is inappropriatefor me to talk in detail about the results untilthe proper analysis has been done in all ofthe businesses, I am pleased to say thatoverall our scores are continuing to move inthe right direction but, as usual, it is clearthere is a great deal to learn from theseresults and the information which we cangleen from them. I have always said that bycontributing to the Great Place to Worksurvey, everyone gets to contribute to ourcontinuous improvement manual. There is alot to be proud of and I would, therefore, liketo thank the 80% of you who have taken thetime to give us your feedback.

I would like to end this column on a note ofenthusiastic optimism. The potentialpipeline of work across MADG is better thanI can ever remember. The opportunitiesafforded by our planning consent arefabulous and we are all immensely proud ofMarshall Motor Holdings and how Dakshand his whole team have grasped theopportunity given to them when we floatedMMH on the London Stock Exchange lastyear, since when the business has beentransformed.

Finally, it has been an enormous pleasure tohave worked and be guided by my fatherover the last few years, and I am thoroughlylooking forward to working with our newChairman, Alex Dorrian.

Royal Flying HighHis Royal Highness The Duke of Kent visited Marshall of Cambridge inMarch at the invitation of Sir Michael Marshall following a meeting at theImperial War Museum, Duxford. During his visit, His Royal Highnesssaw our new paint facility in Hangar 17, our civil aircraft activity, and metmany of our apprentices and members of the LaunchPad team beforere-visiting the Control Tower, which he had originally opened in 2000.The highlight, however, of His Royal Highness’ visit was a flight in aTiger Moth from the Cambridge Flying Group in an aircraft which hisown father may have flown more than 75 years ago.

On 21st April 2016, Marshall Aerospace andDefence Group announced that the companyhad been selected as a recipient of a 2016Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the InternationalTrade category. The award was given inrecognition of how, during the course of threeconsecutive financial years, Marshall saw anincrease of almost 70% in its international trade.

During this three-year period, more than half of Marshall’s exportswere engineering and support services to airframe OEMs,governments, air forces and commercial operators. Marshall is alsoenjoying growing success in the commercial aerospace sector andcited, in its award application, how it completed a complex, time-sensitive two-aircraft cabin upgrade programme for TAP, Portugal’sleading airline in 2014 (pictured below). The project, which includeda new in-flight entertainment system and structural changes toaccommodate a lower deck mobile crew rest area, accounted forsome 35,000 billable design and production engineering hours. Moreover, the project was awarded in part because of how wellMarshall had performed on a three-aircraft project (of circa 40,000billable hours) for TAP in 2012.

Marshall is also expanding its international footprint and, during thethree year period to which the award relates, the company opened asecond office in the UAE to support existing contracts and toexplore further in-country opportunities. Market penetration in theMiddle East, and elsewhere in the world, is occurring as a result ofMarshall’s growing reputation. For instance, the work Marshall isdoing with major OEMs, governments and air forces (and inparticular the UK’s Royal Air Force, which awarded Marshall a Chiefof the Air Staff Commendation in 2013) is being noticed.

The company’s strength in the international market place has asignificant impact in the UK. Marshall employs more than 2,000 people, contributes circa £100m gross value-added to the UK economy andspends over £140m in the supply chain to support its business;indirectly supporting a further 2,500 jobs (Buro Happold, 2014).

Commenting on the company’s receipt of a Queen’s Award forEnterprise for International Trade, Steve Fitz-Gerald, CEO ofMarshall Aerospace and Defence Group, said: “It is a great honourto have won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, for which we are mostgrateful. It is the most respected of all business awards, and to berecognised for our role in the export of the UK’s engineeringcapabilities, in both commercial and military sectors, is an immense boost to the men and women of our company. Marshall has built anenviable reputation the world over, and we are keen to do our part tostrengthen the UK's Prosperity Agenda”.

Also contributing to Marshall’s international sales during the lastthree years was, and continues to be, the manufacture of fuel tanksfor the Boeing P-8 maritime patrol aircraft (pictured above); forwhich the OEM presented Marshall with a ‘Supplier of the Year’award in 2014.

Additional international sales for Marshall began in January 2015,when the company opened its aircraft refinishing facility inCambridge. It is one of the largest and most advanced facilities inEurope and complements Marshall’s MRO and cabin upgradeservices. Capable of accommodating Boeing 747-400, 777 andAirbus A330 sized aircraft, the facility is performing work for bothmilitary and commercial overseas customers.

Queen’s Award

Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant ofCambridgeshire, Sir Hugh Duberlypresented Steve Fitz-Gerald, onbehalf of Marshall Aerospace andDefence Group, with the Queen’sAward for Enterprise in theInternational Trade category at aceremony in No. 22 Hangar atCambridge on Friday, 9thSeptember. Marshall is supplying the auxiliary fuel tanks in ship sets of six, along with a number of Line Replaceable Units and components.

After the incredible support from Marshall as a whole duringBEN week, our CEO, Daksh Gupta decided to go one stepfurther and take on a challenge even he described as‘madness’. Taking part in the first ever Business IndustryLeader Challenge, Daksh stepped completely out of hiscomfort zone and opted to leap from the skies in asponsored Sky Dive. Whilst admitting to a phobia of heights,on the 22nd July 2016, risk turned into jubilation as he safelylanded and went down in history as an individual who wentthat extra mile for a charity that is close to his heart.

Daksh had set a target of raising £100,000 to add to the BENpot and as it stands his Just Giving page is well over the£150,000 mark! For less than ten minutes of personaldiscomfort free falling from thousands of feet above, surelyDaksh would be the first to admit he wouldn’t hesitate to doit again…well, maybe.

WING UPDATE

Wing is a proposed development of 160acres of Marshall-owned land, north ofNewmarket Road, Cambridge. Theoutline planning application for Wing wassubmitted in December 2013, following ayear of consultation with the communityand other key stakeholders. Themasterplan envisages:

- Up to 1,300 new homes, of which 30%will be affordable homes

- Public open space, including sportspitches, tennis courts and allotments

- A new primary school, nursery andcommunity facilities

- A foodstore, replacement petrol fillingstation and other local shops

- 4 hectares of car dealerships

- Improvements to Newmarket Road

Following lengthy negotiations, theplanning applications were presented tothe Planning Committee by the officers ofSouth Cambridgeshire District Council on20th April 2016. The officersrecommended approval of the application, and after much debate the Committeevoted 11 votes to 3 in favour of grantingplanning permission. The final stage ofnegotiating the planning permission is toenter into a legal agreement, known assection 106 agreement, with CambridgeCity, South Cambridgeshire District andCambridgeshire County Councils. Thelegal agreement will ensure that thescheme delivers affordable housing onsite, and approximately £28 million of

community benefits, including delivery ofthe onsite primary school, off site fundingfor secondary education, transport improvements, health facilities and a range of other community benefits.

Our expectation is that the formalplanning permission will be issued by the end of 2016 and in the followingsection, we’ve attempted to answer likely questions on the project.

What happens next?MGP (Marshall Group Properties) isworking to find a development partner to bring forward the first phases of thedevelopment.

A competitive tender process is underwayand we anticipate selecting the preferredpartner in the early part of 2017.

What does this mean for businesses onthe North Works? When the Group committed to progressingthe Wing project, one of the main driversunderpinning the scheme has been toprovide funds to invest in modern premisesand a better working environment for ourstaff, as well as a better front door for ourcustomers. The cost of relocating thebusinesses from the North Works has beena key point of negotiation betweenMarshall and the Local Authorities, as wehave sought to balance the needs of thebusinesses with the important City-wideneeds for transport improvements, education, housing, and more affordablehousing in particular.

The illustrative phasing plan oppositeshows that the residential developmentwill commence on the existing greenfieldland fronting Newmarket Road. This isthe land between the crescent on theNewmarket Road frontage, and the petrolfilling station. As such, there is noimmediate requirement for relocatingbusinesses on the North Works.

MGP is working closely with MarshallADG and Marshall Motor Holdings plc todevelop plans to relocate the motordealerships and Aerospace buildings intoalternative premises. Plans are beingdeveloped in consultation with thebusinesses and will be communicated tostaff as soon as they are finalised.

Who will operate the supermarket? We are yet to agree commercial termswith an operator for the supermarket, which will be located within the localcentre. The replacement filling station will include a Marks & Spencer foodoutlet, which is due to open by the end of the year.

What leisure facilities will there be?The development will provide a range offacilities including sports pitches, allotments, leisure routes and acommunity hall, which will be available for hire.

ENABLING PROJECTSIn order that the Wing development canprogress once our development partner ison board, we have been working on anumber of enabling projects, working inpartnership with Marshall ADG and MMH.

Key projects of note are as follows:

• Site excavations to assess archaeologicalremains. Excavations to the north of theairfield have revealed a large Iron Agesettlement (c. 800 BC to 43 AD) whichextends to around 7 hectares (17acres). It does not pose adevelopment constraint, butarchaeologists are working to analysethe various artefacts discovered onthe site, including over 7,000fragments of pottery, as well asanimal and human remains. MGPintends to commission anarchaeological illustrator to prepareillustrations of what life might havebeen like on the site in the iron ageperiod, which we will make availablein due course.

• Redevelopment to provide a newJaguar Land Rover dealership.Completion late 2016.

• Demolition of existing buildings atTeversham Corner and replacement PetrolFilling Station which will be run by BP andinclude a Marks & Spencer food outlet.Due to open late 2016.

• Relocation of the Aircraft DesignOffice (ADO) to the Quorum is plannedfor next year, enabling demolition of theADO to allow the Motor Group to takepossession of the site. Colleagues inMarshall ADG are working to finalise theinternal fit out requirements at theQuorum, to allow the move to take placeby mid-2017.

• Ground Run EnclosureMGP andMADG are working closely to developproposals for a new Ground RunEnclosure, to enable aircraft engineground running activities to berelocated from the existing Engine RunUp Bay, prior to the Wing developmentbeing occupied.

The new facility is to be located adjacentwest of Delta taxiway, next to Hangar 21(Test Hangar) and close to Hangar 17.After a competitive process, we haveselected global market leaders Blast

Deflectors Inc (BDI) as our deliverypartner.

The facility will be 20m high and willdeliver wider benefits to the communityby generally reducing noise levels arisingfrom engine ground running atcommunity locations around the airport.

Consultation on the project withmembers of the public and Marshall staffwas launched in September 2016, withthe objective of submitting the planningapplication before the year is out.For more information, please visit ourconsultation website:

RIAT marks 50th anniversary of Marshall’sassociation with the RAFThe Marshall Group was once again present at this year’sRoyal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), held at RAF Fairford overthe weekend of 8th – 10th July.

With so many of the maincontributors to this very special relationship at the Air Tattoo,we took the opportunity to host a reception on board C-130JZH883 which was on static display at the Show, the tail ofwhich had been specially painted in the paint facility atMarshall in Cambridge to reflect the anniversary.

RIAT 2016 also featured the first ever international display byLockheed Martin’s F-35B Lightning II, and also welcomed theDuke and Duchess of Cambridge who attended the Show withPrince George, on his first ever public engagement.

Among other highlights from the event was a march past by 750 air cadets to mark the Air Cadet Organisation’s 75th anniversary.

The Company will further celebrate this special relationshipwith a service of commemoration and a celebratory dinnerat Jesus College in Cambridge on 19th December, 50 yearsto the day that the first C-130 arrived at Cambridge Airport.

The tail of C-130 ZH883 (pictured above-right and below)at RIAT was painted specially for the 50th anniversary in therefinishing facility in 17 Hangar at Marshall Aerospace andDefence Group. Charity Cricket match - RAF Brize vs MADG CambridgeIt was Cambridge’s turn to host this year’smatch; Jesus College was the ideal venue, and the date 29th June. The stunningbackdrop of the College grounds, buildingsand thatched pavilion could not be morequintessentially English. Unfortunately thatbrought typical English weather too, withdark clouds and light rain! Luckily after a bitof arm twisting the ground staff allowed usto remove the covers and start play. MADGCambridge batted first; the first wicketfalling quickly with the scoreboard on 8, butlast year’s star, Ziaf Kulasi partnered withDave Roberts and put on a further 94 runs.Ziaf had to retire after he passed the agreed50 runs maximum, reaching the target with adriven four. In the difficult conditions and

facing testing bowling by Brize, the MADGCambridge team finished with 131 for 5.

The RAF Brize batsmen responded with anexcellent opening partnership from Ian Barrettand Matt Minter, despite the best bowlingefforts of Paul Marshall and Harry Oates. Thebreakthrough came when Oates rearrangedMinter’s stumps with the score on 40. Thisbrought Abed Rashid to the crease who hadthe unfortunate role of watching his teammates lose a few wickets whilst he kept up hisend and ensured the scoreboard movedswiftly. Rashid was eventually run out but withnice partnerships from Phil Groves and GrantStanderline the score was pushed on. RAFBrize fell short of the target in the 18th over,

just 13 runs short of victory! So 2016’sCricket Cup winners are MADG Cambridge.

The Champagne Man of the Match was avery hard choice this year with Tom Milner’stight bowling producing four wickets, Ziaf’sclinical batting and Ian Barrett’s brutishstriking of the ball to all corners. But theMan of the Match was Abed Rashid; hiscementing, crafted batting innings, nicebowling and enthusiastic fielding securedthe Champers!

The real winners were the two charities, TheAlzheimer’s Society and East Anglia’sChildren’s Hospices with presently over £700raised, and still counting.

The Cambridge Aero Club, which was one of the first UK aero clubsto gain an ATO certificate back in 2014, is delighted to announce thatit has recently obtained approval from the CAA to conductCompetency Based Modular IR flight training. Until very recently itwas only possible for pilots to gain an Instrument Rating through avery small number of commercial pilot training schools. TheCambridge Aero Club is one of the oldest clubs in the UK and is oneof the first private training schools to gain this prestigious approval.

“The course is designed for PPL and CPL holders” explained Head ofTraining, Anthony Cooke, adding that "...it takes into account previousinstrument training experience. We are delighted to add this to ourexisting and impressive list of approvals”.

Unlike the IMC Rating, the CB/IR is a full instrument rating making it afar more useful rating to gain. Please contact The Cambridge AeroClub to find out more.
