INTRODUCTION BACK GROUND AND SELECTION CRITERIA
BACKGROUND The concept of a Dromana Football & Netball Club ‘Team of the Century’ had often been raised over the years at our club and in 2012 efforts were made to bring such ideas to fruition. Unfortunately, illness and the ensuing death of Bob Moorehead, a member of the original selection sub-committee, placed any further action in abeyance. There are genuine challenges and difficulties in selecting a Team of the Century at any football club, particularly in the period 1900- 1945. Not only did two World Wars devastate and deplete local communities, in terms of young footballers killed and maimed in action; but other factors such as:-
Players being forced to travel to find employment during the Great Depression.
Poor or non-existent club records.
Missing league documentation.
Inadequate newspaper reports and club results.
….make it virtually impossible to do justice to all players in selection of such teams for the period 1900-1945 However at the beginning of 2015 efforts were made to reform a new sub-committee and in May of that year the first of a series of meetings was scheduled and conducted. The new sub-committee consisted of DFNC Life Members, Past Players and a Board of Management representative: These members were:
Gary Ferguson - (Life Member 1983) Past Senior and Reserves Player, Reserves/U18 Coach and longtime club trainer. Ray Fyson - (Life Member 1982) Past Player and 3 times Senior B & F. 1971 Senior Premiership player and 1966 U17 Premiership Player. Brian Griffith - (Life Member 1967) Past Senior Player, Senior and Reserves Coach Colin Matthews - (Life Member 1975) Past Senior Player & Reserves Coach. 1971 Premiership player. 1964 U17 Premiership player, Former Board/Committee Member, League Delegate for 10 years and Club Historian. Ken Myers - (Life Member 1974) Past Senior Player & Senior Coach. 1971 Premiership player(Act Capt)

Roger Spaull - (Life Member 1994) Past Senior Player, Reserves and U18 Coach and longtime Team Manager Graham Stelling - (DFNC Board Representative/ Life Member 1989)Former club President, Secretary and Treasurer. Brian Taylor - (Life Member 1976) Past Senior Player. Captain of first U17 team in 1959.
Meetings were recorded and ‘minuted’ and the resolution of differing opinions were reached by discussion and consensus. Each nomination for selection was duly discussed and, in some cases, selections for certain teams and positions were revisited on several occasions. One of the first responsibilities of the sub-committee was to decide on the nature of the teams to be selected and, of course, the criteria (conditions) for the selection for players. Drawing upon the experiences of other football clubs, which had undertaken similar projects, the following decisions were made:-
Seven DFNC ‘Teams of the Decade’- (1946- 55; 56-65; 66-75, 76- 85, 86-95, 96-2005 and 2006-2015.) would be selected.
A ‘ Team of the Post WWII Era ( 1946-2015)’ would be selected.
Considerable time was given to the question of the years 1896 - 1944 and it was thought best to name prominent players in that period of our club’s history because of factors described earlier. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION The criteria agreed to, by all members of the subcommittee, were:
1. All players considered for selection, in any team of the decade must have played at least 50 senior club games. There were two exceptions :-
The player had departed DFNC to play VFL/ AFL ( Senior and/or Reserve grade Football)
Winning a major league award such as ‘Best & Fairest’ or ‘Goal -kicking’ award or Club Best & Fairest.
2. Other criteria that the subcommittee considered when selecting players were:-
Years of service to the club.
Games played in DFNC career.
Any coaching/leadership roles at DFNC.
Service to the club as a committee member, club official or volunteer worker.
Severe injury while playing for DFNC which may have led to reduced career games or caused premature retirement from football.
3. In the Team of the Post WWII era winners of League Best & Fairest or League goal
kicking would be considered.
