Formula SAE Australasia 2016
Sponsorship Proposal
1 1
What is Formula SAE?
Formula SAE is an internationally renowned
student engineering design competition, run by
the Society of Automotive Engineers, in which
students take on the role of a small production
team. Throughout a single year teams are
challenged to conceive, design, finance,
manufacture and finally race a prototype formula
style racing car that adheres to the strict
regulations outlined for FSAE.
Since formation in the US in 1981, the FSAE
competition has expanded across the world and is
recognised as the foremost ‘breeding ground’ for
the engineers of the future. Over 500 teams
compete worldwide at annual competitions,
providing each with a world ranking. It is the
beginning for many students into large industry
companies such as Boeing and Mercedes or racing
engineering careers such as Formula 1 and V8
Supercars.
It provides students with the rare opportunity to
apply engineering skills and knowledge at a practical
level and gain real-world experience in project
management and team work, setting those involved
a step ahead of their fellow graduates.
The Australasian competition is held at the end of
each year and is attended by over 25 universities
from the Asia-Pacific region. Throughout the event
cars are judged on a point scoring basis in a series
of static and dynamic challenges including cost
efficiency, presentation and engineering design,
solo performance trials and high performance track
endurance, all competing for overall supremacy.

The UTAS FSAE team
The UTAS Motorsport Engineering team (UME) is an
extracurricular, student-run initiative dedicated to the
development of a Formula SAE car for the Formula SAE
competition. The team consists of 30 students, mainly
consisting of aspiring engineers ranging from 1st to 4th
year, with other students also involved in the media and
business side of things.
Since forming in February 2014, the team has now
successfully competed in the annual FSAE Australasia
competition for the last two years running, with the team
currently ranked an impressive 170th in the world out of
550 teams, with that ranking certain to improve as the
team builds on its experiences from the last two years.
Our ultimate goal is to be recognised as one of the
premier Formula SAE teams in Australia. In seeking to
achieve this, we hope to promote a culture of applied
learning, encourage young students to pursue exciting
careers in engineering and act as representatives for
the University and Tasmania, and all that these have to
offer. With a promising future ahead for the team, UME
aims to take the next step into becoming a team capable
of challenging for top honours at competitions each
year.
In 2014, UME competed for the first time after a steep
learning curve throughout the year. Despite numerous
management, design and fabrication challenges, and
with the support of our sponsors, UTAS did exceedingly
well for a first year team, coming in 14th out of a field of
26 contenders.
In 2015 UME built on the foundations laid from the year
before, producing a new FSAE car which was a giant leap
forwards in terms of both performance and design. These
design advances helped secure the team an impressive 9th
place out of 30 teams in the design judging. With the
team also finishing 5th in the business presentation, UME
demonstrated that they have a team that is professional
as well as being talented budding engineers.
In the dynamic events, two minor failures meant that the
results for the car weren’t reflective of its true potential,
which combined with the improved quality of opposition,
meant that UME finished 15th, a position which will be
improved on this year. In just two years the team has
already received two awards, a 3rd place in fuel efficiency
and the CAMS award for “inspiring motorsport” which
were received in 2014, with many awards to come in the
future.

Sponsorship benefits
Increased company brand exposure
UME aims to provide its sponsors with as much
exposure as possible, with the team trailer
providing a large visual presence that accompanies
the team to all events, including every testing day
and a full week long competition every December
in Victoria. A large amount of road time for the team
means that UME will be proudly displaying our
sponsors’ logos regularly throughout the year.
During 2015 the latest model car also featured at
the following high profile events, with many more
to be attending during 2016:
UTAS Open Days
Simmons Plains V8 Supercars
Agfest
Shannon’s Car Expo
National Science Week
In addition, the Formula SAE competition itself
creates significant opportunity to generate
interest and enquiries in your business as it is
attended by hundreds of university students from
across Australia and internationally, together with
many major players and buyers of the
automotive and engineering industries.
Enhanced community and public image
Sponsorship of the UTAS FSAE project supports
the career development of all students involved
whilst aiding in the promotion of engineering and
higher education to the young people of
Tasmania, thus positively influencing your
company brand by highlighting its commitment to
the Tasmanian community and its interests.
Student access and networking
opportunities
UTAS is highly regarded all over the world for
producing engineering graduates of the highest
calibre in all engineering disciplines and
involvement with the FSAE team facilitates
interaction with such students, opening up
recruitment/employment possibilities and placing
your company at the forefront of promotional
activity now and into the future. Sponsorship also
creates a valuable relationship with UTAS, forming
a basis for the development of professional
networks with talented students and staff.
