!“We would like to work more on meeting our awareness goals in the second
semester. We were not able to carry out many events in the first semester, and we
need to reach out to more underclassmen so that they would join the club. Better
coordination within the membership, and also planning and implementing more
awareness events will be our main focus for the next semester. The pearl milk tea
sale was successful and quite fun to be involved in as well. For the next semester,
we look forward to doing the Peter and the Wolf play in a local library, making and
selling HBV plushies, and also creating awareness songs (and maybe dance) to
perform at our other events. If this song/dance could be incorporated into our
annual Asian market awareness event, the event would be much more successful.”

“I think this was a very successful semester! Although these events were not
humongous, publicized ones, we were able to concentrate on our members and
show them the importance of hepatitis B. Unfortunately, we were not able to
accomplish one of our events, the plushie and chocolate making event. We wanted
to make them during December, but our schedules during winter break were all
different. The successful events were definitely the mini board and the holiday card
making. I do not think that there were any unsuccessful events because each one
had a good amount of effort that resulted in a good outcome. My favorite event was
definitely the mini board one. It was fun interviewing all our candidates and seeing
who would mold best with the position. For this semester, I am looking forward to
educating the health classes within our school and planning Hepatitis B
Awareness Week!!! I hope that we will continue to be active and motivated despite
our busy schedules!”

%!“My officers and I felt that we did not meet our goals since our member count is
low and has been dropping. Next semester, we hope to increase our popularity and
get more students interested in our vision. Together, we will look forward to a full
semester filled with events and hopefully get interested underclassmen to become
officers next year as all the current officers are seniors. Attendance and member
interest has always been a challenge we are always fighting. Many of our planned
events do not come through due to the low participation. We also hope to work
with other Team HBV clubs around our area to have major outreach events. “

%“Just a simple event such as getting together to make the bags was a small but fun
thing to do for the members. At the same time, getting together to make the bags
was like an icebreaker for we watched movies while preparing them. The members
grew closer together and so, if we have more events in preparation perhaps we
could gain more members.
Since we only had this one event, we look forward to having more events with
greater impacts for the next year. Also, we hope to obtain more involved members
since we officially started out in the late semester. Hopefully by recruiting more
members and doing more outreach events, the Houston area will be aware of
HBV.”

!“This semester overall has been extremely successful. Our club, although still new,
has established a firm foundation and gained a lot of publicity within our school.
We also have really dedicated members that are enthusiastic about our events and
are willing to volunteer in them. Our goal for the next semester will be to organize
a greater variety of events that are aimed towards the public and not just to the
students in our school. We would like to try some of the events that other Team
HBV High School Chapters have successfully carried out and Team HBV at
Dougherty Valley is planning to organize a system much like Canyon High

%'“Recently, we have been able to recruit a few additional active members. We
achieved our goal of recruiting 10 active members and have kept up with bimonthly
meetings to brainstorm event ideas and to play HBV Jeopardy, preparing members

establish any major events for this semester but we do have a few plans for next
semester. We will be hosting an informational booth while raising funds selling
macaroni and cheese during our school’s International Week and plan on having an

!“This semester has been relatively successful, considering that it was the club’s first
year and everyone was adjusting. We had a couple very successful events, such as
the food faire, participation in the Zumbathon, and preparation for Peter and the
Wolf storytelling. We were able to get off to a good start financially by raising $180
and the next food faire is coming up in May. The club has also managed to get into
the school yearbook a couple times, so we hope that more people will be joining the
club next year. For this semester, our best participation would have to be during
the Zumbathon, however, we are hoping that this year we will be able to create
many other activities on our own, such as the Peter and the Wolf skit and HBV
movie night. We will also be concentrating on creating a couple viral videos on
Youtube. Next year, we should be more prepared to take on more challenging
plans, so we will have many more activities planned out. We would also like
Millbrae Leos Club to become more involved with us so we can work together and
be more effective.”

%“Our initial goals for the club include getting more funds, more members and
attention from our school’s community. Unfortunately, we did not quite meet our
expectations. First, most students from our school are Caucasians and they feel
that they do not have to pay attention to causes like Hepatitis B, which mostly
affect Asians. Second, we often meet logistic issues when it comes to hosting
fundraisers. We were planning to host a fundraiser selling baked desserts and pearl
milk teas at school. However, the school administration required us to label our
food items with nutrition labels, which are very challenging to do for homemade
goods. Also, clubs were only allowed to sell food 30 minutes after school time, or
during weekends. This made it very challenging to outreach to the student
community. We thought of selling the foods at other places in the community, but
then it loses our purpose of getting more attention from the school’s community.

Semester Reflection !“The Team HBV High School (HS) Chapters has seen many changes this
semester. As the HS Chapters intern, the first intern of this position at the Asian
Liver Center, my goal this semester has been to bring together the HS Chapters to
unite their creativity and enthusiasm for hepatitis B outreach. I am grateful at their
cooperation with my ideas for the HS Chapters, some of which worked well, some
of which could have worked better. I am also amazed at their initiative and
enthusiasm, which manifests itself in creative and effective events. Of course, as is
expected, not all ideas worked all the time. However, their determination and
positive attitude never fail, making my job even that much more enjoyable.
Currently, I look forward to next semester. It will be exciting to have the newly
implemented HS Chapters board and Hepatitis B Awareness Week. I can’t wait
to see what the chapters come up with next semester!”
