“ At Bell, I found a really deep cultural

learning environment which made me excited to go back to work and put it all into practice! As teachers, we have

to keep learning so we can engage our students and teach more effectively. ”

CARLA, FROM BRAZIL

THE BELL WAYOur unique teaching approach has been influenced by six decades of experience and shaped by an Emeritus Professor from the University of Cambridge. The six principles below will form the backbone of your learning and will benefit you in your career too, as we show you how to approach your own teaching in the same way.

MAKING OUTSTANDING THE NORMBell trainers create high expectations and engagement.

SHARING CLEAR LEARNING AIMS AND OUTCOMESBell trainers have clear, consistent learning goals and teaching methods.

ADAPTING LEARNING TO EACH INDIVIDUAL TEACHERBell trainers find out about each teacher’s ambitions and capability, and build from there.

• We challenge each teacher we teach to perform beyond their expectations, enabling them to excel.

• We expect our teachers and trainers to be the best in their field. We provide regular feedback and development opportunities and film the best lessons to share and inspire others.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS PRINCIPLE

• We make the aims of each session and activity clear in a way that inspires and engages teachers, and measure progress against these aims.

• We monitor quality through our own standardised, teaching observation system, designed by Bell’s team of experts and praised by educational inspectors.

CLARITY OF LEARNING PRINCIPLE

• We are experts in working with teachers of different needs and cultures and offer different levels of challenge to each, based on their needs, goals and context.

• We run programmes for teachers of every age and stage of experience and frequently welcome back returners on the next step of their journey.

UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL PRINCIPLE

HELPING TEACHERS TO LEARN EVERYWHEREBell trainers maximise formal and informal learning opportunities.

USING FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE TEACHING AND LEARNINGBell trainers use assessment and feedback to help teachers develop their individual skills.

BELIEVING IN THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATIONBell teacher trainers continuously refresh and renew their professional skills to support effective learning and teaching.

• Bell’s 2015 report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate praised our “culture of continuous improvement”.

• We have considerable experience in Action Research and a research partnership with the University of Warwick.

• Many of our trainers are conference speakers, researchers, webinar presenters and published authors.

ORGANISATIONAL LEARNING PRINCIPLE

• We provide a range of social and cultural activities to help teachers develop their learning outside the classroom.

• We help teachers develop their skills through the use of well-stocked learning centres, learning technology and regular self-study assignments.

LEARNING EVERYWHERE PRINCIPLE

• We help teachers assess their own work and show them what they have to do to take their teaching to the next level.

• Reflection by teachers on their own practice is a key component of all our teacher training programmes.

ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING PRINCIPLE

OUR EXPERTSBell has been teaching for over 60 years and we are constantly innovating to develop the very best teaching methods. We are passionate about education and never stop learning or striving to be the best we can be.

Our expert teacher trainers teach our CELTA, Delta and teacher development courses and travel to teaching projects all over the world. We also regularly host ELT experts and authors as guest speakers and teachers at Bell Teacher Campus, our residential teaching development programme held in Cambridge each summer.

BECOME A TEACHER: CELTA

Trainee teachers that learn with us gain the practical skills, knowledge and qualification to get the best teaching jobs anywhere in the world.

OVERVIEW

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is the most highly-regarded and widely-recognised initial qualification for English language teachers globally. The CELTA is accredited by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge.

WITH A CELTA QUALIFICATION, TEACHERS CAN:

l Teach confidently anywhere in the world

l Understand the learner

l Understand and use a variety of teaching approaches

l Successfully plan and resource lessons

l Have a greater awareness of language

l Begin a career as a English language teacher.

EXPERT SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE

CELTA is a four-week, assessed course which focuses on practical skills. Hands-on teaching practice and work on assignments begin straight away. At Bell we know this can be daunting, so our expert trainers provide extensive support and guidance, in addition to tutorials, seminars, classroom observations and access to teaching and learning resources.

Our teacher trainers are experts in their field and use a variety of effective educational methods and strategies throughout the course. This means trainee teachers benefit from an outstanding learning experience themselves before applying the knowledge and skills they have gained in their own classrooms.

REAL TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Trainee teachers learn within our schools at Bell Cambridge or Bell London, so become immersed in a real teaching environment with access to resources like the learning centre, teachers’ library, free photocopying, free WiFi and a whole team of experienced teachers to observe, talk to, and learn from.

Teaching practice takes place in real classrooms at our schools, with enthusiastic people from the local community that want to improve their English (Bell offers all lessons with trainee teachers free of charge to students).

“ Once you get inside the classroom you get a taste for it and you get lost in the moment. The school has been amazing and the facilities are really good. The staff are great – there’s a really friendly vibe and everyone is lovely to one another. ”

TARSILA, FROM BRAZIL

“ My teaching skills have improved drastically! I’ve never taught before and I didn’t know anything about teaching, so to be where I am now is just amazing. I have gone from zero to confident in the classroom. It’s a really great feeling – suddenly I’m a teacher! ”

REBECCA, FROM THE UK

“ Bell’s CELTA course has given us the opportunity to realise our dream of living and working in a different country and experiencing a new culture. The techniques we learnt on the course help us to independently plan and teach effective lessons with confidence. ”

“ I was fairly experienced when I started the Delta course, but I soon realised that an experienced teacher is not the same as an expert teacher. The Bell Delta will help you become an expert teacher. So much of what I learned on the course still influences my teaching today. ”

The Bell Delta is a globally-recognised qualification that sets teachers apart from the crowd as advanced practitioners.

STUDY ANYWHERE WITH ONLINE MODULES

Doing the Delta online enables teachers to study in their own time wherever they are in the world. Participants receive detailed individual feedback on all of their work, and online forums provide peer support and encouragement.

DEVELOPING TEACHING METHODOLOGY IN LIBYA

We created a bespoke programme for a group of secondary school teachers from Libya, who visited Bell Cambridge to develop their language skills, learn new teaching methodology and prepare for the Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT). The intensive programme included lectures, workshops, group tasks, lesson observations and individual tutorials, which gave each teacher the opportunity to focus on individual areas for improvement.

12 bellenglish.com/teacher bellenglish.com/teacher 13

“ On the TKT course at Bell, I’ve learnt lots of practical techniques for kindergarten and primary learning using activities and pair work. The environment here makes you eager to learn; there are so many opportunities to improve yourself and the staff are very helpful. ”

ESTABLISHING YOUNG LEARNER PROGRAMMES IN KAZAKHSTAN

We designed and delivered a two-year series of summer camps to improve the language skills of 12-13 year olds at the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS) network. NIS teachers received intensive training from Bell experts including seminars, observations, team-teaching sessions and ongoing support to enable them to deliver and grow the programme, preparing hundreds of Kazakh students for subject study in English.

ENHANCING ENGLISH TEACHING SKILLS IN CHINA

Over the last few years, we have worked with a variety of partners in China to enhance and improve the teaching of English to children of all ages. Projects include:

l The opening of two kindergartens in Hangzhou in partnership with the Qian Jin Education Group. Bell experts trained local staff and worked with them to develop a curriculum based around the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

l A two-week training and development course for primary teachers, as part of a long-term framework for the Nanjing Education Bureau.

l A showcase of English language teaching methodologies to over 400 primary and secondary school teachers, principals and officials at a conference in Foshan, which encouraged participants to discuss innovation in education at a regional level.
