Art Education Teaching Philosophy
Amy Johnson
What is the purpose of Art Education?
Art Education helps students develop a sense of personal
identity through the development of their senses.
This development provides students with the opportunity to build connections between
their knowledge base, their personal identities, their
communities, and the world at large.
General Education encourages linear thinking
It stresses the connections of top/bottom, left/right, right/wrong, cause/effect, and
beginning/end

What do I want for my students?
I want my students to understand how their
knowledge of the linear world fits into their
understanding of their identities. I think that
understanding of the world, and the world as it relates to self, is the strongest benefit
of Art Education.
