Teaching C.V. – Sheila Christensen Sheila Christensen www.mysteryquilter.com [email protected] @mysteryquilter Biography Sheila Christensen has been stitching since making all her own clothes as a teenager. Since taking up quilting, she has quickly developed a reputation for her designs and her helpful teaching style. Sheila has a keen interest in colour and using fabric designs in creative ways, and loves to help quilters take adventurous steps in their quilting. Sheila was born in the UK and moved to New Zealand in 2002. After a career in business, she studied primary teaching at Victoria University and taught in Masterton and in London. She has been the owner of Quilters’ Lane in Masterton since 2011, and she finds her teaching experience very useful in planning and implementing her quilting classes. Sheila has won awards for her quilts including Shooting Stars, Shifting Strata and Purple Haze. Her Modern Triangle Sampler was accepted into Quiltcon in the USA. Every year, Sheila designs a Puzzle Mystery Quilt, which is run as a block of the month from her shop and is sold internationally. Her Forest Light quilt was featured as a block of the month in the New Zealand Quilter. Sheila is author of Quilts with an Angle, published by C&T, and designs patterns for Creative Grids USA. In 2019 Sheila was invited to appear on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims. The episode will air on December 1 st 2019. Her second publication, The Quick and Easy Guide to Triangle Blockswas published in Jan 2020.

Teaching Style

I am a trained and proactive teacher and I will give personal attention to everyone attending my classes. I structure my classes, prepare thorough notes and demonstration pieces and give instruction throughout the day, sharing tips and techniques throughout.

CLASSES by Sheila Christensen

1. Blocks with a Twist (Beginner upwards) 1 day class

A fun way to learn triangle blocks and experiment with secondary patterns. Turn your blocks into coasters, a runner or a quilt. Pattern included. Requires a 60 degree triangle ruler.

2. Triangle Block Party Class (Beginner to Intermediate) (1 or 2 days)

Make these fun modern triangle sampler blocks in my Triangle Block Party. You will learn the easy way to cut and piece the blocks with no need for templates, y seams or foundation piecing. Optional one or two day class. In a one day class, students will make 5 or 6 blocks. They can repeat these blocks to make a quilt, cushions, runner etc and setting instructions are provided. Requires a 60 degree triangle ruler. Pattern for Modern Triangle Sampler included. NEW for 2020- Hexagon Block Party Class (Beginner to Intermediate) (1 or 2 days) Make hexagonal blocks using my patchwork techniques. Requires a 60 degree triangle ruler. Block patterns for at least 6 blocks and setting instructions included.

3. Classes from my Quilts with an Angle Book I can teach any of the quilts from my book. Please ask for details, class length will depend on the quilt to be taught. All participants must purchase their own personal copy of the book for any of these. All of these require a 60 degree triangle ruler. Suggested classes:

4. Mini Wonders Waltz (Intermediate) 2 day class

Mini Wonders Waltz is 24" across and makes a great table topper or floor mat. Keep making more blocks and you can make this quilt grow. You will learn the easy way to cut and piece the blocks with no need for templates, y seams or foundation piecing. This class includes fussy cutting techniques. Two day class. Pattern included. Requires a 60 degree triangle or mini diamond ruler.

5. Mini Wonders (2 days. Intermediate)

Learn my 60 degree patchwork technique and make this rainbow runner or wallhanging. Two day class. In this class you will learn to make each of the 5 blocks and how to put them together to complete the project. Pattern included. Requires a 60 degree triangle or mini diamond ruler.

6. Topsy (1 day, beginner)

Break out your stash and make this fun quilt, or use the blocks to make cushions. Perfect for stashbusting and suitable for beginners with a basic knowledge of rotary cutting and 1/4" seams Pattern included. Requires a 60 degree triangle ruler and Creative Grids Half Sixty triangle ruler.

7. Eclipse Runner (Beginner to Intermediate) 1 or 2 days

This is a really fun block made using the Creative Grids Triangle in a Square and Perfect Rectangle rulers. You can continue to make more blocks and turn them into a quilt, using a planned or scrappy colour palette. Pattern included. 8. Garden Party (Beginner) 1 day class This class includes lessons in selecting colours and fabrics for quilts. A great scrap-buster using the Perfect Rectangle ruler. We cover fabric selection, colours and have lots of fun with fabric. Pattern included.
