2014 – Present Merchandise Data Scientist, Advance Auto Parts, Inc., Roanoke, VA/Raleigh, NC
Research academic literature on assortment planning and modeling techniques used to estimate demand and substitution behavior
Build, assess, interpret, benchmark, and deploy large-scale (500k+ SKUs) production-ready advanced predictive models for assortment planning decision-support
Designed and developed the Customized Assortment Decision Support System (CADSS) using Oracle, R, Solver Studio/Pyomo that generates demand forecasts that fed into hierarchical assortment planning decision models that can be used by a category manager to generate a recommended assortment solution
Collaborate with decision-makers to design and develop ad-hoc analytical solutions, Excel-based tools, and explain technical aspects of solutions delivered
2012 – 2014 Teaching Assistant, Virginia Tech (R.B. Pamplin College of Business), Department of Business Information Technology, Blacksburg, VA
Taught Quantitative Methods II, which covered decision modeling (LP, IP, MIP, Network Flow, NLP, Multi-criteria), project management, and decision analysis using Microsoft Excel’s Solver
Teaching Assistant for Advanced Methods in Business Analytics, Project Management, and Information Security
Summer 2012 Modeling & Statistical Consultant, Advance Auto Parts, Inc., Roanoke, VA
Created a centralized database to store data that was in silos across the firm such as financial measures, demographics, weather metrics, competitor features, and merchandise measures
Developed and cross-validated a real-time spatial-temporal Do-It-Yourself (DIY) classification system using R and IBM SPSS Modeler that helped provide a more transparent understanding of market dynamics to drive better business.
2011 – 2012 Graduate Assistant, Virginia Tech Family & Community Research Lab, Blacksburg, VA
Created an Access database to manage survey respondent data for a $500k grant

Matthew A. Lanham p. Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business 2
Created an automated reporting tool in VBA with a custom Excel ribbon and buttons to automatically generate respondent summary statistics and graphics in a Word document
Fall 2011 Associate Collaborator, Virginia Tech Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA), Blacksburg, VA
Performed statistical consulting for graduate students and researchers within the university. Taught short courses for faculty and graduate students on using R with Excel and SAS Programming
Summer 2011 Teaching Assistant, Virginia Tech Department of Statistics, Blacksburg, VA
Taught Biological Statistics - Course covered descriptive and inferential statistics in a biological context, focusing on fundamental principles, one-and two-sample parametric inference, simple linear regression, and frequency data
2010 – 2011 Graduate Assistant, Virginia Tech, University Scholarships & Financial Aid Office, Blacksburg, VA
Performed statistical analyses on student segments to estimate the probability of attending. Created an auto-generated analytical Word document report using SAS macros used to automate an annual satisfaction survey.
2009 – 2010 Statistical Research Analyst, Genscape, Inc., Louisville, KY
Developed an innovative crude storage product which estimated oil storage at Cushing, OK by processing storage levels from aerial video and images captured by helicopter. The product used by oil traders generated $1.3M in new business in the first three months of release.
Created a standardized image/video measurement procedure that resulted in more consistent measurements when compared to unstandardized measurements.
Built predictive models that helped identify internal measurements errors, individual storage tank capacities, and tank ownerships
Developed a web application that queried and displayed static demographic tanker information used by quality assurance analysts
Spring 2010 Statistical Consultant, University of Louisville Department of Bioinformatics & Biostatistics
Collaborated with a pharmacy resident in a study investigating antibiotics versus length of hospital stay
Outlined statistical tests to be performed, reviewed and formatted data sets to fix data anomalies, wrote SAS code, and interpreted statistical analyses for study presentations and peer-reviewed paper
2007 – 2009 Natural Gas Data Analyst, Genscape, Inc., Louisville, KY
Expanded a novel natural gas storage product that started estimating one storage field and eventually grew to several.
Tested and benchmarked proprietary measures used as decision-support metrics for traders. Various predictive models were developed and updated to estimate dynamic field behavior
which led to reduced data product error when compared to known operations. Maintained our production Oracle database by creating, updating and deleting oddities in the
data as well as modifying gas flow algorithm parameters via SQL.
2005 – 2007 Quality Assurance Analyst, Genscape, Inc., Louisville, KY
Developed automated applications in Microsoft Excel using SQL and VBA to gather and transform various data sets for algorithmic testing, data calibrations, logistical planning, and other process improvement projects.
Performed end-to-end software testing for an expanding power transparency product and decision-support tools.
Interviewed, hired, and cross-trained new analysts, reviewed their performance, and made recommendations to improve their results
