“gururbrahmaa gururvishnuh gururdevo maheshwarah
gurur sakshat parahbrahmah tasmai shriigurave namah.”
Without whom, my life would have resided into the
darkness, I would like to thank such teacher for being
in my life and teaching me all the valuable things in
life, on this auspicious teacher‟s day.
We should be thankful to our teachers and to
whosoever teaches us small or big things in each day.
However, we have a special day to remember and
show our gratitude to our teachers, which is called as
teacher‟s day. In India, we celebrate teacher‟s day on 5
September, in the honor and remembrance of
Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, on his birthday.
Sarvapalli radhakrishnan was a great philosopher and
political leader our country has had in its history. He
was the first vice president of India (1952-1962), and
the second president of India (1962-1967).
Why we celebrate teacher‟s day:
When he became the president of India, some of the students wanted to celebrate his birthday, to which he gently replied that instead of celebrating his birthday, if they celebrate it as the teacher‟s day, he would be obliged. Therefore,, till today teacher‟s day is celebrated as the tribute to a legendary Sarvapalli radhakrishnan.
Celebration of the teacher‟s day:
All schools, colleges, universities celebrate teacher‟s day. Various competitions like, essay writing, poem-writing competition celebrated in schools and colleges. Students write the brief description about the teacher‟s day in essay writing competition and rhyme their words in poetry competition and they deliver several speeches on teacher‟s day mentioned here.
We witness „one day teacher‟ campaign in schools and
colleges on this day. In which, a student of higher
standards or of the same standard teaches a subject to
the students of his class or of the lower standards for a
day.
Various selections or voluntary approaches are made
of the students who will participate in this campaign
and, they even prepare for what they will be teaching
on this day.
On the teacher‟s day, while they are teaching to the
students, they are been supervised by the real teachers
of that school or college and at the end of the day, a
winner or the best teacher of the announced and is
awarded by the principal or teacher.
Importance of teacher in our lives:
Our saints have described the value of a teacher in our
life, very precisely and accurately,
“tvameva maataa cha pitaa tvameva, tvameva
bandhushcha sakhaa tvameva,
tvameva vidyaa dravinam tvameva, tvameva sarvam
mama deva deva.”
Meaning, (Oh Guru!) You are my mother and father;
you are my brother and companion; you alone are
knowledge and wealth. O Lord, you are everything to
me.
“guru govind dono khade kake lagu paye,
Balihari guru aaopko govind diyo milaye.”
Lines from „Guru Granth Saheb‟- the holy book of
Sikhs. Meaning, my teacher and lord both are standing
beside me, and I am confused whom to bow first, but I
surrender to my teacher who introduced me to the Lord.
Therefore, a teacher is to be valued even more than the
Lord is.
