Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein Mary Wollstonecraft Shelely first published what is often referred to as the
author of the world’s very first science fiction novel, Frankenstein. It was first published on March 11, 1818. Shelly, who was only 21 years old at the time, created the story while visiting with friends on a rainy afternoon in Geneva. The story revolves around a huge and physically deformed creature who despite his outward appearance is quite gentle and intellectually gifted. Rejected in a cruel manner, the creature wanders about longing for companionship and becoming increasingly mean as its companionship is repeatedly denied.
