    Vale Bill Bolt

It is with sadness and regret that the TTGDCC inform you of the

passing of William Alfred Bolt - Bill.

Bill Bolt certainly has a name behind him and a personality to

    boot!

Bill, a legend of the Cricket and Football clubs at TTG was a Life

Member of both. A true legend to all that knew him.

Bill was the Sportsman’s Club licensee for 28 years, he

maintained Pertaringa and Bulkana Ovals and pitches like they

were fit for the BEST! He collected the empty bottles and cans

around the club for many years, he loved being at the club.

He loved donating eggs weekly for afternoon teas that he had

collected from his “farm” where he thoroughly enjoyed

spending time with the dogs. His trade off for donating eggs

was a sandwich and a can of Coke!

Bill, you will be always remembered as a true club man, cricket

or footy, the Gullies is what you bled.

You will be sorely missed, always respected, always

    remembered.

    PRESIDENTS REPORT 2019-2020

On the field, the season 2019/20 saw a bit of the changing of the guard. The Evans boys had retired, Ben Hutchinson went off to

England and Patrick Page and Tim Oakley went to other clubs. Although this was a blow to the A grade squad it opened the door

for younger players to make their mark. We saw Nick Stathoris, Fletcher Pannell and Matt Hermann all play A Grade and they

were not out of their depth. With Matt Weaver continuing as Cricket Director and Joe Gatting as Senior Coach we were able to

pick up some early wins and see some very solid individual performances. Unfortunately, we were not able to carry this through

the season and we were unable to make finals in any senior Grade. In saying this, however, the foundation has been laid for a

    very positive season in 2020/21.

I am pleased to announce that Joe Gatting will be back to coach us in the 2020/21 season and we have recruited Tom

Rutherford, former SACA Coaching Coordinator as his assistant. With Matt starting a new job Garry Chillingworth has agreed to

take on the Cricket Directors role with Matt’s support. This will give us the strength and cohesion we require to keep the club

    moving forward.

You all may have heard of the Hussey report and its findings, and I can assure you the Board will be working with SACA to ensure

the 13 recommendations Mike Hussey put forward are implemented as soon as possible. The SACA board are really pushing the

reduction of clubs and I hope to have more to tell you about this over the next couple of months. I have met with Keith

Bradshaw and have put a very strong case for Tea Tree Gully to be the main Northern side in any reorganization.

The work the Sportsmans Club, Tea Tree Gully Council and Richard Harvey MP, have done securing a major State Government

Grant has been pivotal in my submission to SACA with the upgrade to the Changerooms and the new floodlighting which will

allow us to train and play junior cricket under lights. As a club we were successful in securing an infrastructure grant to have our

turf net area upgraded to meet Cricket Australia code of practices. This work was carried out in readiness for October when we

moved outside to train. Again, I thank SACA, TTG Council and Richard for their support in getting this project over the line.

This season will bring many challenges, some we have never witnessed in our Lifetimes. Covid has made us change the way we

play, administer and watch cricket this season and perhaps beyond. We are going to find it tough financially with over 25% of

our funding being cut by Cricket Australia but if we work together, we can get through this season without too much hardship. I

ask that all of us keep volunteering our time and let us see if some of these small jobs we normally pay for, can be done within

our membership group. I am open to discussion with anyone that may have an idea or suggestion that will help.

Covid is going to be with us for some time and we must learn to live and play within its restrictions if we unite and follow the

rules, we can have a full and uninterrupted season.

In closing I would just like to thank everyone for their patience and for attending tonight’s Annua General Meeting. I personally

would like to thank Bruce for all his work in putting together our Annual Report and to Scott Simmonds and all the Board for

their hard work in what has been a very challenging close season and start to the 2020/21 Season.

We must keep working together to keep the Tea Tree Gully District Cricket Club moving forward and developing talented

cricketers from Juniors through to A Grade.

    Annual Report 2019-2020

    Page 12

Secretary's Report 2019/20 Its been an interesting year…

    Covid

The implementation of Covid lockdown in March caused the end of the season to be truncated, in particular the Major round

was decided based upon ladder positions at the end of the Minor round. This more or less gifted Kensington the majority of

Senior premierships - this was not a popular decision with some clubs - particularly those coming second, third or fourth, but

was entirely consistent with the existing bylaws.

The shutdown also caused the cancellation of the Bradman Medal, which was unfortunate - especially for Adam Somerfield

(Team of the Year and 1st Grade Bowling Aggregate) and Phil Primer - our Volunteer of the Year nominee for 2019/20.

    Congratulations to them both.

Covid also rapidly resulted in Cricket Australia and SACA reducing staffing levels, and funding to a range of programs, including

Premier Cricket. This in particular has resulted in a cut in funding of $25k for season 2020/21, with no indication of this funding

being restored in subsequent seasons. This will make meeting financial commitments a challenge and there are some reductions

in flow on funding that will be needed for 2020/21.

    Hussey Report

I spoke in my previous report that I have long felt the support we get from SACA's High Performance has been totally inadequate

to support the best of Premier Cricket players reach their playing potential - not just at our club but across the competition - and

this is pretty much evidenced by the results we typically get in the national Shield and One Day competition.

It seems the SACA Board must have read this last season and commissioned the Hussey Report.

SACA had done some analysis of Redback results in Shield Cricket over the last 70 years and discovered that the results aren't

    too exciting.

Historically the State men’s team has only won 6 titles in the last 70 years. To examine some of the reasons for this, in April

2020, the SACA Board engaged highly respected Australian cricketer Michael Hussey to conduct a review on the West End

Redbacks culture, the State men’s system and high performance.

Michael Hussey tabled his report to the SACA Board in late June 2020, setting out his findings from the review and making 13

recommendations (with numerous sub-recommendations). While the primary focus of the review was the West End Redbacks,

the subsequent report and recommendations produced by Mike covers the broader South Australian cricket ecosystem,

including in particular the Premier Cricket Competition.

The SACA Board have indicated they are determined to act upon the recommendations, and have focused in particular on

recommendation 3.b: "Reduce the number of Premier Cricket teams to between 8 - 10 and remove the bye. This decision to

    be made by the clubs."

This seems to be the focus at the moment and there has been a strong push by the SACA Board for Premier Clubs to enter into negotiations to have the necessary mergers complete in time for Season 2021/22. The arithmetic of this requirement is for six clubs to merge to form 3 new clubs - which in my view is a big ask. (At the time of writing, there has been some publicity about Adelaide and Southern Districts merging - but it is a long way from being finalized.) The other recommendations are also meant to be being worked on - I have listed these below and cherry picked a number of sub recommendations which will actually make a difference when enacted.

o Ensure strong talent for current and future roles.

o Improve coaching in juniors at Premier Cricket Clubs.

o Review coaching structures and SACA Development Officer involvement at Premier Clubs.

o Increase the level of coaching expertise and skill development.

o Vastly improve and value Premier Cricket.

o Improve SACA relationships with Premier Cricket Clubs. Genuinely work with and resource appropriately, place

value in and acknowledge the importance of Premier Cricket as an integral part of the pathway.

o Reduce the number of Premier Cricket teams to between 8 - 10 and remove the bye. This decision to be made

    by the clubs.

o Produce pitches with more pace and bounce (may mean playing some games away from football ovals in first

    half of the season).

o Explore different ideas to create a better contest between bat and ball.

  • Tea Tree Gully District Cricket Club

    Annual Report 2019-2020

    Page 13

o Review points system, introduce bonus points for the second innings of games to discourage games being

    called off early.

o Encourage first-class players to play Premier Cricket when available with, at the discretion of the Redbacks

Head Coach being able to manage players, particularly fast bowlers, when needed.

o Actively recruit quality and experienced players back from community cricket and give genuine hope of

    Redbacks selection through performance.

o Re-visit the Zadow Report reviewing recommendations and working with the Premier Clubs to implement

    where appropriate.

o Improve relationships with Premier Cricket Committee.

o Genuinely work with the Committee - communicating, respecting and resourcing appropriately.

o Include Premier coaches and players in an advisory capacity to ensure messaging is clear and aligned.

    o Develop relationships with Schools.

o Remove Redbacks League (Formerly Premier League).

o Begin Premier Cricket earlier with all state contracted players available.

o Assemble a high calibre, high quality, complimentary Redbacks coaching unit.

o Genuinely value and have a presence at Premier Cricket, developing relationships with coaches, administrators

    and players.

o Structure contracts around culture, behaviour, development of players and Premier Cricket involvement and

    relationships.

    o Improve coach development.

o Use vertical integration exposing the Redbacks coaching unit through the pathway and Premier Cricket.

o Invite club coaches to be involved in the pathway and Redbacks programmes.

    o Improve player development.

o Use past players as a coaching resource.

o Selection panel to include the Redbacks Head Coach and two or three independents, one being classified as Chairman.

o Add high calibre people with recent HP experience to the HP Committee.

    o Improve recruiting strategy.

o Focus on developing SA players through Premier Cricket and the pathway.

o Combine Redbacks and Strikers programmes.

As can be seen here, there are a multitude of recommendations, particularly involving and engaging with Premier Cricket (not just mergers...). It should be noted, this is not a short term quick fix to improving the Redbacks performance - true improvement will take a number of years and requires investment at the grassroots level and upwards. It remains to be seen how the SACA Board addresses these other recommendations.

Clubroom redevelopment In spite of the downturn in everything due to Covid, Tea Tree Gully Council and SACA have provided significant support to a number of projects at the clubrooms. We were successful in obtaining grant funding from Cricket Australia's infrastructure funding and Tea Tree Gully Council to redevelop the practise nets in the turf wicket practise area. This was a $40k redevelopment that provides improved safety and ball control in the turf wicket area. There is still a need to redevelop the hard wicket practise area and this will be a particular focus moving forward. In addition, the state Football and Cricket bodies have worked with Tea Tree Gully Council, the State Government and the Sportsmans Club to obtain funding for a full redevelopment of the changerooms, which will significantly increase the size of two of the change rooms, add another Umpires Room and and fit shower cubicles to all the change rooms. They have also funded new oval lighting on Pertaringa, which will increase the lighting level from the current 70 lux to 300 lux - a huge increase. Bulkana will also have lighting upgrades - only to 150 lux, so not as useful to Cricket, but still a significant upgrade. It has been a lot of hard work by the Sportsmans Club to get these upgrades across the line, particularly Des Trussell, Peter Martin and Dorothy Kotz have worked closely across State and Local government to obtain the funding for these improvements. Importantly, recognition by Council of the need for ongoing investment in the facilities at Pertaringa is recognition of the importance of both the Cricket and Football clubs to the Tea Tree Gully community, and I thank the Council, its staff - in particular Chloe Oborn - and the elected representatives for their support. In closing, Covid is still with us and has already had an impact on the conduct of the 2020/21 season. Hopefully medical science and common sense will see the end of Covid in 2021 and we will get back to some semblance of normality next season.

Some thank you's and acknowledgements - in addition to the tremendous assistance Bruce Jamieson provides to the club, I wish to acknowledge the efforts of the Board of Management – Ian Graham, Heather Martin, Dorothy Kotz, Michael Weaver, Rowan Morris, Chris Lees, Matthew Weaver, Sam Weaver and Adam Somerfield – I thank them for their continuing support. There are a significant number of volunteers who commit time each week to support the club and the competition that require thanks, too numerous to mention them all. I would however like to particularly recognize the curating team – John Davey, and Colin Paech for their efforts in getting the playing surfaces up every week. All the best to all the teams for the remainder of the season. S. Simmonds January 2021
