Concept and Theme

The theme of my A4 size postcard is “Tea Culture” which I’ll capture and

study how they make the tea and the environment of the tea shop. I tried to

capture how they make the tea and how they serve to let the reader to

understand more about tea. To understand how to make the tea is important.

By using the Chinese traditional teapot to make and serve the tea to

customer.

The reason I choose tea as my theme because my parents like to travel a lot

in different tea house. Besides that I also love drinking tea, it is important to

know the way of drinking and serve the tea. To let the reader understand

more about tea, I have captured a lot pictures of how they make their tea in

process.

These are 2 of some great tea house around Kuala Lumpur. They have been

there for generations and they are the most famous tea house.

Page 5: Tea Culture

I have chosen the most famous tea house in KL which is “Purple Tea” located

in Jalan Brunei Utara. Besides that, I also went to other famous tea house

which is “Kean Guan Tea Merchants” also located in KL China Town.

There are more than 1 Purple can in KL, so my first location for Purple Cane

was actually in China Town as well as Kean Guan Tea Merchants.

Unfortunately, the oldest shop of Purple Cane in Chana Town has moved out.

So I have changed my location in Jalan Brunei which there is also another

Purple Cane over there. But I didn’t take many photos in Kean Guan, so I just

decided to do in one location, since Purple Cane is the oldest tea house in

Malaysia.

Research

Purple cane is established in 1987 and with 25 branches spread out all

around Malaysia. To focus on modern method of tea making, let me tell you

more about the process of making tea. There are steps to brew the tea to

customers and every step is important, there are also a meaning in these few

steps. The list below is the steps on “modern method of tea making”

STEPS:

1. Prepare tea-making utensils

2. Put water to boil and prepare tea leaves from its canister

3. Show tea leaves to guests (To let the guests know what type of tea

you’re making)

4. Warm up teapot, pitcher, and teacups

5. Put tea leaves into the teapot

6. Fill up the teapot with hot boiling water, the tea infusion thus made is

quickly poured from the teapot into the tea tray/crucible. This process

ensure that the tea leaves are properly moistened and loosened

7. Prepare first brew and pour out warm water in teacups

8. Transfer the tea into the pitcher and then fill up the teacups

9. Guests are then served

10.Before enjoying its rich flavor, appreciate the aroma and colour of the

tea

Page 7: Tea Culture

While I was taking pictures of them brewing the tea process I have learnt the

important of making tea. It is not just pouring hot water and mix with leaves. If

putting them together too long the taste of the tea will change. In each tea

flavor has its own function like if you drink too much of tea, it will cause you

headache. Besides that, some buyers bought the package of tea powder back

and kept them for a very long tea. These also can change function and the

taste for the tea.

Purple Cane doesn’t only sell tea but also have restaurant for dinning. Each of

their menu have the recipe of different tea. It is a much to visit Purple Cane in

Malaysia, their recipe for dinning is really delicious.

I realised that while she ready to serve me the tea, she turn the teacup

clockwise twice. I asked her why did she do that and she told me that it is to

respect the customers.

Everyone drinks tea, when tea having a high tea, dinning or even when them

having dim sum for breakfast. Besides that, while you’re chatting with your

friends or meeting your friends, you can always enjoy tea while having a chat.

The Purple Cane shop I went also have wide range of teas, brewing utensils

as well as tea related products such as books and snacks.

The location is at :Purple Cane Tea Square

Lot L1-01, 1st Floor, Shaw Parade, Off Jalan Pudu,

Changkat Thambi Dollah,

55100 Kuala Lumpur, KL

The person who show me the steps of brewing tea told me that I’m very lucky

to take pictures and talk him. He also not around here, but I was lucky to meet

him and he told me a lot about tea. People enjoy drinking tea while having

meeting or gathering. Therefore, it can help you relax when you’re stress.

These photos show the few steps of Modern Method of tea-making.

Each steps they brew the tea is very meaningful. The heat of the water when

we’re boiling can’t be too hot, it can cause the taste of tea.
