Taiwanese Cultural Exchange Tour 2015

A wonderful opportunity has become available for a Representative group of Rangatahi (Māori youth) from Ngāti Tāwhaki Kapa Haka to accompany Hauraki District council delegate John McIver to the country of Taiwan.

It is our hope to seek funding assistance and sponsorship to send a group of nine youth and three support whanau to participate and support in the cultural exchange of our Countries and Communities of Taiwan and mainland China.

Our main focus is to prepare and develop these Rangatahi Youth to become ambassadors and leaders within their community through the vehicle of Kapa Haka or Māori performing arts and culture and to enable them an opportunity to engage in an experience of international relationships with our sister cities.

Our youth predominantly come from Paeroa and for many this will be their first experience to travel overseas, to represent as delegates and entertain the communities within Taiwan.

The cultural experience will include differences in cultural practices and traditions, schools and languages, food, people density, environmental and time differences, ways of life and artistic performances.

The Taiwan trip will help our Youth develop, learn professionalism, personal growth and confidence in working with and alongside other cultures to also gain an understanding of the future relations of our communities. We strive for excellence in performance as we are representing our Iwi of Hauraki and Aotearoa The benefits of this trip include

The Group has performed publicly at the Waitangi Day Celebrations 2015 held at the Paeroa Domain and were warmly supported by friends, whanau and community supporters - a wonderful performance and a highlight of the event.

Recently the group attended the Formosa Cultural Exchange held at the Taiwanese Academy at Golden Valley Waihi and performed in support of Mayor John Tregidga opening address to the Taiwanese and Community. The group has also hosted 16 delegates from China at Ngahutoitoi Marae, which included a Wero (traditional challenge), Haka Powhiri (traditional welcome), Waiata tautoko (support songs), Kapa Haka performance and Waitressing.

My aspirations and achievements are not the act of one but of many.

The Whanau believe in the potential of our Rangatahi and in partnership have provided a safe learning environment to improve the wellbeing of our tamariki mokopuna and assist in the ongoing revitalisation of Kapa Haka and Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga in Hauraki and the encouragement of youth returning to our local marae.

As a whanau we understand the importance of our Rangatahi achieving their goal to meet the target of $30,000 which is required to assist in the funding of their trip to Taiwan and it has been this dedication that our supportive whanau and youth have been quietly working hard in a range of fundraisers.

To date the whanau have

● Hosted and performed for (2) delegate groups from Taiwan and China at Ngahutoitoi Marae which included a three course meal.

● Stall at Hauraki Maori Culture Festival ● A week long Living Arts Harakeke and Crafts exhibition held in Paeroa ● A Wearable Arts and Crafts Harakeke Fashion show held at Paeroa Memorial

Hall ● Raffles of 3 donated Taonga Maori ● Whanau fundraiser ● Quiz night

We are still in the process of applying to other funding organisations for grants as well as sponsorship but as a small whanau we are against time and spread pretty thin.

The date has been set - September 2015 - and once documentation is confirmed we will have a true estimate of expenses available.

The Kapa Haka performing arts group is available and may assist with

● public and private events ● Traditional Powhiri ● Traditional Maori performing Arts ● Social and Media representation for all potential sponsors endorsing Ngāti

Tāwhaki.

Group Overview

The group (roopu) consists of Tamariki aged from 11 years to 20 years and have been practicing at venues including Paeroa Central School and local marae Ngahutoitoi - this includes wānanga marae stayover.

The purpose of these Wānanga is to instil tikanga (traditions and practices), waiata (song), manaakitanga (sharing and caring), marae (way of living), Whakapapa (origins), Tāhuhu (history), kotahitanga (unity) and whanaungatanga (whanau relationships) in preparation for the trip to Taiwan.
