Madrid, May 27

Real Madrid forward Cristiano

Ronaldo on Saturday created

yet another UEFA Champions

League record as Real Madrid

went on to clinch the trophy by

beating Liverpool 3-1 in the final.

The Portugal international

became the only player to win

five titles in the Champions

League era. He surpassed

former Barcelona midfielder

Andres Iniesta and former AC

Milan No. 10 Clarence

Seedorf, who won four titles in

their career. Former Real

Madrid winger Francisco

Gento holds the record with six

titles from the Pre-Champions

League era.

Ronaldo won his f i rst

Champions League trophy

back in 2007/08 season for

Manchester United. He won the

remaining four in past five years

for Real Madrid in 2013/14,

2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/

18 seasons. If that was not all,

he also finished this year as the

leading scorer in the European

competition with 15 goals to his

name. The Spanish club won

their third consecut ive

Champions League title on

Saturday, becoming the only

club to do so since the

rebranding of the competition

in 1992. In the European Cup

era, Real lifted five titles from

1956 to 1960, while Ajax and

Bayern Munich lifted three in a

row in the 1970s. Zinedine

Zidane also became the first

manager to lift three straight

China beat Japan 3-1 to claim Thomas CupBangkok, May 27

China's men took home the

Thomas Cup on Saturday,

defeating a hard-charging

Japanese team 3-1 and

regaining glory after stumbling

out of the biennial tournament

early in 2016. Olympic medallist

and world number 5 Chen

Long got the team off to a slow

start in an upset loss to Japan's

f lashy left -hander Kento

Momota 21-9, 21-18.

But China's star-heavy squad

rallied, with world number 3

doubles pair Liu Cheng and

Zhang Nan level l ing the

contest, while Shi Yuqi stayed

one step ahead of Japan's

Kenta Nishimoto, jumping in the

air for a smash winner to reach

a match point that Nishimoto

then netted to give him the win

21-12, 21-17.

Clinching the third and deciding

The BCCI today reacted

cautiously to a sting operation

which alleged pitch doctoring

in three Test matches featuring

India, saying it would consider

action against implicated former

cricketer Robin Morris only if

he is found guilty in an ongoing

ICC probe.

The sting has been carried out

by a channel and the Test

matches in question are India

vs Sri Lanka (Galle, July 26-

29, 2017), India vs Australia

(Ranchi, March 16-20, 2017)

and India vs England

(Chennai, December 16-20,

2016).

The f i rst and third Tests

mentioned were won by India

while the Ranchi encounter

ended in a draw. "We believe

ICC has started its probe. Let

them complete that and

pronounce Morris guilty. The

BCCI will only act when they

have the verdict in hand," a

senior office-bearer of the

Board told PTI today.

He also said that Morris, who

has played 42 first-class and

51 List A matches in his career

is not currently involved in any

BCCI projects. "We need to

check with our Anti Corruption

Unit (ACU) whether Morris'

name was there on the suspect

l ist . Secondly, he is not

associated with any BCCI or

state unit project currently from

where we need to pull him out.

"So the only thing left is BCCI

domestic cricketers' pension of

Rs 22,500 (after deductions).

If he is getting that pension,

BCCI is well within its rights to

cancel that but only after he has

been proven guilty," the official

said.

Morris, on his part , has

reportedly denied any

wrongdoing and has cried

conspiracy. Alleged to be a

Desperate to reclaim a place in

the top ten, world rapid

champion Viswanathan Anand

would target a podium finish in

a tough field at the Altibox

Norway super tournament,

beginning here.

If recent records are anything

to go by, Anand is likely to stage

a comeback of sorts. It has been

a bit of a roller coaster ride for

the Indian in the last year or so

but he has risen back to where

he belonged every single time.

Anand is coming here from a

Bundesliga game in Germany

where he helped his team

Baden OS win the title for 12th

time in last 13 years.

But the statisticians have a hard

job on hand finding out when

was the last time Anand started

as the lowest seed on rating in

any super tournament. It will be

a different challenge in a

different setting for the multiple-

time world champion across

formats.

The top eight of the world top

ten are part of the field and the

other two players in are two

biggest names who just

dropped out of the top ten -

Anand and Levon Aronian of

Armenia.

Aronian will also be training his

sights for a big comeback after

another lacklustre 'Candidates'

tournament.

The top seed and rat ing

favourite is yet again local hero

and world champion Magnus

Carlsen and it will be interesting

to see if he can live up to his

top billing.

Carlsen has been in good form

recently, winning the Shamkir

tournament but might face stiff

chal lenge from Fabiano

Caruana of United States.

The fact that Carlsen and

Caruana are set to play a

world championship match at

the end of the year in London

wil l certainly make their

personal encounter a must-

watch for the chess buffs.

Big test awaits Viswanathan Anand at

match-fixer, Morris is seen

introducing Galle curator

Tharanga Indika to the

undercover reporter and

boasting about getting pitches

doctored as sought by fixers.

The ICC has launched an

investigation into the matter.

Morris, along with former

Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza

(world record holder for being

youngest ever Test cricketer),

is allegedly seen in the video

bragging about their

connections and ability to fix

pitches through groundsmen.

The Mumbai cricket ing

fraternity wasn't particularly

shocked by the allegations

against Morris. A product of the

famous Shardashram School

and a disciple of Ramakant

Achrekar (Sachin Tendulkar's

formative coach), Morris was

considered to be a handy

limited-overs cricketer, who quit

cricket at 31.

Later addressing a public rally in Baghpat, Shri Modi

said, modern infrastructure of the country has a very

important role in raising the lifestyle of 125 crore people

of the nation. He said, everyone will enjoy the fruit of

development, because infrastructure does not

distinguish between caste, creed and religion, and rich

and poor. The Prime Minister said, a new India is being

erected on the basis of the expectations and aspirations

of the youth of the country. He said, through 'Make in

India' campaign, manufacturing has received a boost

and as a result, there are 120 mobile phone manufacturing

factories in India now as compared to only 2, four years

back.

He also said, his government has made Special courts

for Dalits who have been facing atrocities across the

country. Speaking on the occasion, Road Transport and

Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said, the Eastern

Peripheral Expressway will be completed by March next

year. Shri Gadkari said, farmers have been paid better

than the market value of their plots while acquiring land

for this highway. He added government paid 6,000 crore

rupees for land acquisition to farmers. He also said that

world's most advanced features are being installed in

the Eastern Peripheral Expressway.

Earlier this morning, Shri Modi inaugurated the first

phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway stretching from

Nizamuddin Bridge in Delhi to the Uttar Pradesh Border.

He traveled in an open jeep on the expressway for around

six kilometres, as part of his road show for the nine

kilometre stretch. The six-lane expressway will

provide a major relief to commuters as on its completion,

the time to travel from Delhi to Meerut will be

reduced to 45 minutes from the present about four to

five hours.

try to curb negative impact of plastic pollution. The Prime

Minister said preparations are afoot to celebrate the

International Yoga Day. The Prime Minister remembered

the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru

on his death anniversary today. Paying tributes to

freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, Shri Modi said Savarkar

boldly expostulated by writing that whatever happened

in 1857 was not a revolt but was indeed the first war of

Independence. Shri Modi expressed hope that

forthcoming Eid-ul-Fitr will further strengthen the bonds

of harmony in society.
