Delwood League InfoIt was not the Christmas one was hoping for....by Shawna J. Serniak

When I was asked to tell my story, I really didn’t think it was much of a story to tell at first. It was just my life, and as my Mother always says “God doesn’t give us more than what we can handle.” However what happened 15 years ago changed my life in a lot of ways, and as I look back I realized it has made me a stronger, and better person.

I was a single Mother of a baby boy. I was supporting myself, my son, Trylan and my mother, Mary who was living with us at the time. That year just before Christmas my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a rough time for the three of us, it wasn’t a joyous time.

No, we weren’t a family living on the streets, I wasn’t jobless, and no we were not starving. We were a family struggling; I was doing my best at trying to make ends meet. It was the generosity of people like yourself who knew nothing about us, what we were going through or what it was like to be a family of three on a very limited budget that $10.00 an hour brings. It was complete strangers that all came to together to make our Christmas extra special. It was incredible to see the bounty of food in our home. To have gifts for my son under the tree for Christmas was a welcomed and wonderful blessing! I remember the tears it brought to my Mother and me. To feel so blessed by the hearts and generosity of others....people that we didn’t know.

What happened that Christmas brings me where I am today. Those nameless people that made my family’s Christmas special, stirred something deep within me, something I cherished and have instilled in my son to this day. My Mother who turned 80 in March, my son who is 15 and I - give back to those in need. We deliver Christmas Hampers each year, we gather food for the Food Bank, we donate clothing and household items to WIN House, we

give baby gifts to the Pregnancy Care Centre to help other Mother’s in need, we donate gloves, scarves and hats to the inner city children, we donate toys for Santa’s Anonymous, we feed meals to the homeless, we raise money for the Christmas Bureau and other non-profit organizations. We volunteer our time to our community, Delwood and our city. We don’t just give at Christmas we give .....every chance we get!

Organizations like Christmas Bureau give people just like my Mother, my son and I the gifts of hope, love and the true meaning of Christmas.

No, it was not the Christmas one was hoping for.... it was even better.

This Christmas give to someone in need it made my world a difference!

Community OutreachChristmas BureauSince 1940, the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton has had one mission: to provide a festive meal to Edmontonians in need at Christmas time. The people we assist (families, seniors and individuals) receive more than a meal - it’s Christmas with hope and dignity and the knowledge that there is support from the community. The Christmas Bureau is non-denominational and accessible to all Edmontonians in need.

Each year all of Edmonton comes together to ensure that Edmontonians in need receive a festive food meal at Christmas time. Our goal for 2012 is to provide a festive meal for 65,000 Edmontonians in need. This year we need to raise $1.8 million to pay the bills.

Donations can be made online at christmasbureau.ca year round; by calling 780 421 XMAS (9627); by texting Christmas to 45678 for a $10 donation; by texting Hamper to 45678 for a $5 donation; at any City of Edmonton Fire Hall, Servus Credit Union or ATB branch from November 12 to January 19; or at our donations desks

at Bonnie Doon Mall, Commerce Place, Kingsway Mall, Londonderry Mall, Southgate Centre or West Edmonton Mall from December 1 to December 24.

Without the 800 plus volunteers giving just over 9,000 volunteer hours in six short weeks, the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton could not provide a festive meal for 65,000

Edmontonians in need. It is these volunteers who give of their time, energy and compassion that ensures the tradition of sharing and caring is alive each Christmas. To volunteer, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 780 414 7682 or visit our website at christmasbureau.ca/volunteer.

Honorary Campaign Chairperson, Kevin Lowe, sums it up best – “It takes an entire community to ensure

that the tradition of sharing and caring continues and that no one is left behind at Christmas time. With your support, all Edmontonians will have the opportunity to celebrate with a festive meal at Christmas time.”

Delwood Fall FestivalDELWOOD FALL FESTIVAL 2012Delwood would like to thank all participants, volunteers and workers who attended the 2012 Fall Festival. Especially the Fall Festival Committee; Chantal Chinni, Jeff Esteves, Mea Wiltzen, Roberta Lapointe and Shawna J Serniak, who without this day would not have been the success it was.

The day was packed full of fun and many took the time to enjoy all the festivities. The day started off with a wonderful bike parade with decorated bikes and children in costumes lead by a Police cruiser. The day continued on with lots of activities, food, and music, dancing, wrestling shows, roller derby matches, hip hop martial art stunts, magic act, hypnotist show, and beer gardens and ending the night with a wonderful display of fireworks. It was another incredible day in Delwood with many of our surrounding community neighbours coming out to enjoy it!
