The folks from H2A teamed up with the Santiam Parent Teacher Organization and in less than five weeks they have gathered over $16,000 in donations from local foundations, organizations and individuals alike, with all the funds to go directly to the playground restoration.“I couldn’t be more thrilled!” exclaimed Ford. Details of the donation drive will be available next week in the Canyon Weekly.

Get your dancing shoeson this Sunday afternoon as you may well be tempted to dance in the aisles to the irresistible musical beat of The Flextones, a Salem based trio that has rocked the Willamette Valley for years and highlights this year’s Spring Awakening fundraiser. Starting out the show will be the Santiam Guitar and Chorus Class, followed up by the ever talented and beautiful Valley Hood. The volunteers at Santiam Hearts to Arts have been working overtime for the past 4 years to bring music and art to the children of the North-Santiam Canyon. Last year the organization raised over $2000 at the Spring Awakening festival, enough to help fund both the Jr/Sr High guitar Class and bring music workshops to every student at Santiam Elementary through the Ethos program. “We call that a success! And I’d like to add how exciting it is to be a part of the community that is making it happen!” said Sheila Hoover, president of Hearts to Arts. For more information on Sunday’s show see the ad on page 3.

Last month Nancy Ford of Santiam Hearts to Arts (H2A) presented the students of Santiam Elementary with an artistic challenge. The children were invited to enter a drawing depicting why they love living in the canyon. The winner would be selected to have their art work made into a large mural by local artist Denise Sanders, where it would then be displayed on the side of the school. The idea was that this contest and mural would bring awareness to the community of the children’s plight to have their beloved play equipment, still in storage at Gates Elementary, restored to the school grounds in Mill City. by Elaina Turpin The School Board Meeting was held April 4th, 6pm at the Santiam Elemen-tary School. During the Budget report we learned that the state timber fund distri-bution is $100,000 more than what was budgeted. That will be balanced out with a reduction in the state school fund so will not result in more money for the dis-trict. Dr. Gander asked that people con-tact their representative to support Senate Bill 754 in regards to PERS funding. The district's insurance costs are set to increase 25 percent next year. This is due to the rising cost of litigation and is on tract with other school districts our size. The budget presentation was put off un-til April 16, 6pm, due to the full agenda for today. The presentation will be held at Santiam Elementary. The superintendent will look at dates to present the budget to the Detroit area. There is a $150,000 deficit carryover from this year. This is what is left of the $750,000 deficit that the district started

the year with. The district will file for a Tax Anticipation Note of $750,000. This is needed for cash flow issues, not to count against future revenue. Funds from the state school fund will be held in a separate account as they come in to pay back this note. Ruth Lemke has filed for retirement. Rene Berry submitted her resignation. Both were accepted by the School Board. Greg Grembemer raised concerns about the safety of the climbing wall. When it was installed at Santiam Elementary only 4 of the original 8 support piers were used, since 4 were not salvageable when removed from Gates. The climbing wall is to be fenced off until the insurance agent can come to take a look at it. The superintendent search commit-tee was announced. It includes: Sabrina Kent, Richard Moore, David Plotts, Con-nie Brown, Bill Brown, Todd Reeser, Caroline Gillespie, Roseanna Juhola, Jill Saari, and Alexis Winn. The next regular board meeting will be held May 2nd.

Santiam Canyon School District candidates for the 2013 School Board have been invited to a question and answer forum on April 27, 2013 at 5:00 PM at the Santiam High School Auditorium presented by the Santiam Canyon School District Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The public is invited to submit questions prior to the event by emailing them to Jill Saari, member of the PTO, at [email protected] or by mailing them to PO Box 273 Mill City, OR 97360. Dead-line for submissions is 3:00 PM, April 22, 2013. Questions will be asked on a time available basis. For more information contact Jill Saari, [email protected] or 503-897-3581. By Carol Swanson The Gates Fire Department Music in Bloom fund-raising concert is entering into dress rehearsals. The fundraiser is scheduled for April 19th and April 20th at the new Gates Fire Hall. Bill Bassett and Rita Derrick have been singing together for over 35 years. First, in Santiam Civic Theatre productions in the 70’s and 80’s, and now in concert fundraisers for the Gates Rural Fire Depart-ment. Raised in Mill City, Bassett began singing in a junior high chorus and has been performing ever since. While attending Regis High School he sang in the Regis Glee Club directed by Sister Joseph Catherine and re-members it as a time in which he realized how important music was in his life. “Every chance I got I joined a vocal group”, he said. While at-tending Mt. Angel College he was a member of a Madrigal group. In the following years he joined San-tiam Civic Theatre and performed in many of the musicals, including Oliver, Damn Yankees and Pajama Game. During this same period he also sang in the Mill City Presby-terian Church choir. Rita Derrick has always had a life-long interest in music and at-tended the University of Portland to study opera. Later Rita sang in a country band, and also appeared in many Santiam Civic Theatre musicals. Asked what numbers she was performing in this show, Derrick said her favorite is a Diana Krall number called, “Why Should I Care?”. I didn’t think it suited me at first, but it has really challenged me, and now I love it. I also like the song “Funny Honey”, from-Chicago. Kathy Campbell and I are singing “Somewhere” from West Side Story as a duet. Kathy has a lovely voice, and we’ve had a lot of fun with that number.” When the performers were asked why they continue to invest the amount of time it takes to partici-pate in a concert, both exclaimed that it was well worth it.Derrick said, “I keep coming back

because it’s like returning to family. Everyone accepts me for who I am. I love to sing and I love singing with these people.” Basset agreed. “My mantra is, ‘so much mu-sic; so little time’”. He especially likes the first three numbers, which are from the Little Shop of Horrors. “It makes for a great opener. I also love “Gee, Officer Krupke” from West Side Story. Craig Campbell and I are having fun with that one, and we hope it’s a show stopper.” Asked how long he’ll continue to perform he said, “I want to sing as long as I can.” He add-ed, “I’m a ham that loves applause.”

Tickets are selling briskly for the Friday, April 19th and Satur-day, April 20th Spring fundrais-ing concert to be held at the new Gates Fire Hall. General admis-sion tickets are $18.00, and re-serve seats are $22.00. Tickets are currently on sale at the Mill City Pharmacy, Kelly Lumber Sales and the Gates Post Office. The Santiam Canyon School District is seeking nominations for the 2013 Hall of Fame. Nominations can be sent or dropped off at the high school or the dis-trict office. There are four categories in which nominations can be made. One is that of a former student. Second is a former staff member (teacher, coach or classified staff). Third is a supporter/booster for the school district. The person (or business) may or may not have attended or worked in the district but did something extraor-dinary for the district. The last category is that of a former team or group. All nominations should include what was special about the individual or team and why they should be nominated. It also helps to include supporting facts (newspaper clippings, awards, etc.). Nominations should include the years the nominee was/is associated with the school district and also some contact in-formation would be helpful.

All nominations must be in writing and must be submitted by Monday, June 17, 2013. Please get these nominations to the high school or district office. After the Hall of Fame committee looks at all the nominations, they will make their decision. Again, those nominated should have done something extraordi-nary. The committee is looking for nomi-nations from all the communities that make up the school district, even though at one time some schools may have been their own district. Nominations can come from Mill City, Gates, Detroit and Idanha and those individuals or teams that once represented each of those schools. The Induction Banquet will be held No-vember 9th in conjunction with the alum-ni tournament weekend. If a nomination is not selected this year please feel free to submit their name an-other year. If you have any questions you can call (503) 897-2311. Nominations due Monday, June 17, 2013.

dwindlingThe local Food Bank is facing con-tinuing needs, according to Loretta Benjamin, secretary at Mill City Christian Church. “It’s serious, there are a lot of people coming in every week looking to feed themselves and their families.” said Benjamin. The food bank also gets regular support from the Marion Polk food Share, but according to Benjamin, the all around demands to the food share has gone up 22% since the beginning of the year, thus an over all lesser amount to be divvied up amongst the communities. Currently of special need are protein packed meals such as canned chili, stews, soups and skillet meals. “But we are running short on fruits, veg-gies, and cereals too,” said Benjamin. To donate food please drop off at the US Bank in Mill City during regular business hours. Monetary donations can be sent to Community Assistance Center, PO Box 1006, Mill City, Or-egon 97360. Would you and your kids like to hold and cuddle a fluffy new baby lamb? Once again it's time for Meet the Lambies Day, your chance to bring your family for a day of fun in the country on a small work-ing sheep farm. This annual spring open house is hosted by Wolston Farm near Scio. Raven OKeefe and Ian Caldicott invite everyone to visit their farm rain or shine (we'll be in the barn if it rains) to meet the new spring lambs (including lots of black lambs!), along with the chickens, Border Collies, flock-guardian dogs, and barn cats. Helpful guides will be on hand to an-swer questions, explain the farm's work-ings, and (let's admit it) cuddle the lam-

bies themselves. The farm raises several different sheep breeds for their wool, in-cluding Shetlands, Romneys, and Scot-tish Blackface which are quite unusual in this area. Ian will give herding demon-strations during the day with some of the farm's working Border Collies. Bring the family, and don't forget your camera! There is no admission charge, but park-ing is quite limited, so everyone is en-couraged to carpool with friends and neighbors if possible. For information call 503-394-2021 any time before April 13th. Annual Meet The Lambies Day: Satur-day, April 13 rain or shine. 10am-4pm at Wolston Farm 39562 Hwy 226 near Scio.

The annual North Santiam Chamber of Commerce community awards celebra-tion is scheduled for the evening of April 24 at Santiam High School Auditorium, said Chamber President Sandy Lyness. “It’s a night of community fun, where we can recognize our area residents and businesses for all the great things they do in the North Santiam Canyon.” The night is themed “Peace and Harmony” and will feature the Santiam Community Chorus and musicians from Santiam High School in a collaborative musical performance. Other performers include Alexis Stin-nett, a 9 year old Mari-Linn student from Lyons, who recently performed at the Stoddard and Cole benefit concert, as well as performed the national anthem

at a major league baseball game. She’ll be singing “There’s A Place For Us” by Carrie Underwood. Nominations are being sought for the categories of Business of the Year, Youth of the Year, Non-Profit of the Year and Citizen of the Year. Nominees do not have to be Chamber members, said Lyness. “We appreciate all supporters of our community, regardless of mem-bership status.” Nominations must be submitted by April 13 and forms can be found online at www.nschamber.org or in associated local publications. The President’s Choice award will also be recognized at the ceremony, as well as the Marion White Volunteerism Award, chosen by the City of Mill City. The Student of the Year award will be

chosen by the Santiam Canyon School District. Scholarships from the Youth Benefit Golf Tournament will also be awarded, said Sandy Lyness. Spring is here. The first flowers are blooming. The obvious ones can be seen along the Hwy 22 at the dams heading up to Detroit. Bright balls of yellow, Lomatium hallii, and cream-white Saxagraga sp. are in full flower. Another smaller yellow flower with a big red dot - Mimulus alsinoides - are also growing at a rocky outcrop in Mill City along the highway Leaves of the deciduous trees and shrubs are past budding as they grow. Now is the time to cut your blackberries back! The best time to spray them is in the fall and only with a chemical that is absorbed through the leaves and spreads through the vines. If you use the over the counter chemicals, they usually contain 2 different types: one is the kind you should use that is absorbed throughout the plant and kills to the roots, and the other kills instantly. If you kill it instantly, then the other chemical never had a chance to get to the roots and the plant will just come back the next year. I would suggest hiring a professional sprayer that can spray Garlon 3 or Element in the fall only. This allows the chemical to absorb throughout and by spring it really dies hard down to the root. These chemicals are sold in concentrate for a lot of money so it is best to just hire one to spray for you. If you do this method, you will only have to spot spray the missed one for a few years after that - but you will win! For larger sites, mow it in spring, wait for new growth and spray in the fall. I have had 95% success with this. Enjoy the spring flowers and get those weeds!

The open house is slated for Sun-day, April 21 from 11am to 2 pm at the school cam-pus, 1066 N. 6th Ave. in Stayton. St. Mary currently has 215 students. “The smaller teacher to student ratio is a big plus for our families,” says Principal Mr. Rick Schindler. “We are excited to welcome the community and prospective families who would like to explore the school and find out more about it. I think they’ll find that this is a very friendly environment. We welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds.” Free, refreshments are provided.
