The gym was full of love, sweat, and muscle strains this weekend at the 25th Annual Santiam Canyon Alumni Tournament. This year, about 90 past students and faculty - representing class-es from 1974-2011- returned to their old stomp-ing grounds to get together with old friends, play some sports and get stomped. Even today, many of them are still sore and recovering from the games this weekend. The tournament is not only a fun reunion, it also raises funds for the basketball teams at Santiam High School. This year the the Volleyball Team that won the the tournament was from the classes of 95-98. The players on that team were Roxie Eslick, Gina Frank, Stacy Biddle, Anna Hart, Alicia Co-rey, Jennifer Lunsford, Spring Aerni, and Krista Schade. In Basketball the championship team was from the classes of 89-97. On that team were Mike Carey, Rick Smart, Chuck Larimer, Tobin Han-sen, Jed Henness, Nick Plotts, Carlos Garcia and Spike Aerni. n now Principal at Santiam. Pictured below: Debbie Guerin Brandon, class of 81, after day 2 of the Alumni Tourney- broken glasses, ice pack on knee, and just sitting down with vertigo and nausea she blamed on a hot flash. Several people in the crowd were saying how they thought our team was quite funny, its not what we were going for but well take what we can get. I have not laughed this hard in a long time, said teammate Debbie Hirons Fawcett.

Community forum focuses on long-range planning for Mari-Linn School

Despite rumors, Mari-Linn School isnt going anywhere, said Mark Valen-tine, a member of the long range plan-ning team for the North Santiam School District. Every year, the district hears the same questions - residents concerned that Mari-Linn will close due to budget cuts and consolidating students into Stayton schools. We are totally committed to a K-8, said Valentine. In fact, the district is looking at long range planning for Mari-Linn, seeing the school as a hub of the community. Part of that planning includes holding community forums, like the one held November 8. There, local residents were asked what they wanted to see from the school: what theyre doing well, what they can do better and what local resi-dents want from the community school. Several attendees wanted to see more

summer and after school activities for both students and the public as a whole, like expanded use of the schools com-puter labs. Others wanted more communication about how parents can help support ac-tivities - and some wanted transparency in how the money from the last bond measure was spent. The feedback from residents at the community forum will be taken into ac-count in a 15-20 year plan for the dis-trict, which uses population models and accounts for decreased funding as more baby boomers retire. For more info about the long range planning, visit http://nsantiam.orvsd.org/content/long-range-planning. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec 14, 2011 at 7pm at the North Santiam School Dist office.

One person was killed and four oth-ers were sent to the hospital last Friday afternoon after a two vehicle, head-on, traffic collision on Hwy 22E, two miles east of Stayton. Driver Zana Kuest, 38 of Hillsboro, was headed west on Hwy 22 when she crossed over the center line and into oncoming traffic. She struck a white Chevy Suburban head-on. Kuest had

to be extricated and was taken by Life-Flight to Salem hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Aumsville residents Gerald Capps, 71, and his passenger, Sandra Valerie Capps, 69, suffered non-life threaten-ing injuries. Two juveniles riding with the de-ceased driver were injured. All the oc-cupants were wearing seat belts. There are indications that the deceased driver may have suffered a medical emergency prior to collision. The Lyons Fire Departments assisted other agencies at the scene.

5 minutes to chicken fried steak happiness

Local hamburger joint goes homestyle for dinner

Since new owners LaDean and Harry Caducoy bought Poppa Als on Hwy 22, theyve found inspiration in the wall - and the community - around them. Its been fun, Im loving it. said LaDean Caducoy. Part of that comes from the generations of signatures on the restaurant walls. The other part comes from the freedom to break the hamburger chain and expand into the homestyle menu category: including one very, very large piece of chicken fried steak happiness. Poppa Als calls it the Canyons Big-gest Chicken Fried Steak Dinner. Oth-ers simply call it The CBC. Either way, the 11oz gravy covered hunk of happiness barely fits on a dinner plate, then it gets surrounded by veges and a biscuit. And its ready in just 5 minutes. The CDC is enough for a two-person meal, although LaDean recom-mends coming when youre really hun-gry - because you wont want to share.

Were very adamant about maintain-ing our standards of good food, said LaDean. Served daily after 4pm, the whole din-ner costs just $8.50, with a free drink. Poppa Als restaurant is also work-ing on adding other homestyle dinner options like pulled pork sandwiches, meatloaf, fried chicken and sloppy joes ranging from $6.50-$8.50 a plate. Stop in daily 10am-8pm at 198 N. Santiam Blvd., Mill City (on Hwy 22). Phone-in orders to 503-897-2223.

ficincy program. When the Santiam Canyon School District received a grant to employ stu-dents with the Oregon Youth Conserva-tion Corps, Oscar knew it was right for him. He had the opportunity to work alongside the state parks and rangers on projects that benefited forestry, fisheries and other environmental stewardship projects. Guzman is supported by his parents Armando and Veronica and his FFA ad-visor Nichole Scholz. Not only was Oscar recognized for be-ing top 4 in the nation. In the end he received a $500 award and won the all-expense paid trip to Costa Rica.

1400 students from around Oregon, in-cluding 12 from Santiam High School, gathered at the Oregon Association of Student Councils (OASC) Fall Confer-ence in Seaside last weekend. Guest speakers were Josh Tripp and Tyler Presnell sharing their growth through personal tragic experiences that helped to change their own lives and the lives of young people. Here are a some quotes from a few of our local Leadership group about the ex-perience: Fall conference changed how I think about Leadership and the kids in our school. The speakers showed us how important it is to be involved with other people in your school & that you never know what is going on in their life, said Hannah Thompson, Freshman Class President. I want to bring back a (positive atti-tude) and fresh ideas to the students of Santiam. Make everyone feel more wel-comed, said JJ Halemeier, Senior Class President. It was amazing. I was very impressed

with all of it. It was a great experience for me. Some-thing I want to bring to San-tiam is to have more spirit and more assemblies, said Allison Allbritton, Senior Class Vice President. I was inspired by the whole Fall Conference. I had an amazing time and was really inspired by the speakers. I loved how hard their past was - and they went up in front of us with the courage to tell us their tragedy and what had happened to them. The best part was realizing how great of

people they turned out to be, said Brice Mizell, a member of the SHS Leadership group.

River level below Detroit has dropped a little, and will continue for another week or so. Heavy rain would change that. Until then, we know where the fish are and where they will be going as the river increases and decreases. The Packsaddle run will be good for steel-head fishing and excellent for boating at the present level. Since the river has been too high for best (dry) boating, it will be de-lightful to do trips in the upper section. Coho (silver salmon) are now legal to keep in all river sections below Detroit. Many are chrome bright and very sporting. Last week, friends in my boat caught one that was 39 inches and weighed 15-20lbs. The coho will strike many different lures, and ours took a little Cleo. Pixie lures and Steelies are also good. Green Pirate and Blue Pirate plugs are good, but sometimes they prefer spoons or jigs or bait. Since the coho originated in the North Santiam from the old Mehama Hatchery on Stout Creek, many of the adults return there. Some continue all the way up to Big Cliff Dam, and there are many drifts that probably have good numbers of fish. Many of the migrating adult steelhead and salmon (coho) stayed in the lower North Santiam system for quite a while before coming up into the upper and middle river sections. Now they are moving upstream. Santiam River Trips provides both fishing and scenic trips year around on the North Santiam. Call or email for more info.

(cont. from front) from Idanha, plus parking. Their plan is to stay in the trailer as long as it takes, cooking meals and being stay-ing together. Local organizations are working on establishing a fund at U.S.Bank in Mill City to help offset the familys burden. Do-nations can be directed there under the name of Melissa Saner. Its so difficult to ask for help, said Zola who stresses that any unused funds will be donated back to the OHSU transplant programs to help other families in need. We just want to give back. Were so thankful she has a chance at life.

Two were deployed, one served state-side, they all came home

(Cont. from front) Aaron White served two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was in the Marine Corps for a total of four years and three months. He left the military on November 11th 2006 and came back home. He was married this last August to another life long friend, Nicole, and they now make their home in Mill City, and Aaron works for the Army Corp of Engineers as an electrical apprentice at the Fos-ter Dam. Tyson Sloan served in the Marines for 4 years also, and came back home in 2006. He was married to his long time sweetheart, Lindsay on May 8th, 2008, on May 10th he was recalled. I spent the first 6 months of my marriage in Iraq! remembers Tyson, who also makes his home in Mill City with Lindsay and Eva, 3 and Jackson,1. He too works for the Army Corp of Engineers doing maintenance at Detroit Dam. When asked why return to Mill City? Its just home to me, he said. I couldnt get a hold of Mike, and was warned he was a very busy guy. So I wrote his mom, his wife and his Aunt. Some of the perks of living all your life in a small town is knowing your neighbors. Heres what his wife, April had to say: The way I was told is his senior year of high school he was just going to ride along

with Aaron and Tyson to sup-port them signing up, but he ended up joining as well. He was based out of Camp Pend-leton, CA for the whole four years active duty where he was in the communications field. He never got deployed during ac-tive duty. We met in 6th grade when I moved here...He always had a little crush on me! Af-ter he went into the Marines we started to talk on the phone ... then he came home on sick leave. We ended up confess-ing that we liked each other and started to date. He got re-called a year later to go to Ra-madi, Iraq staying for a year. In March he came back and in April he proposed. We bought our house here in Mill City on 09/09/09, got married 08/07/10 in our backyard and had Quin-ton Michael David Payseno 6/1/11. Mike now goes to West-ern and plans to get a degree to become a teacher while he works at Best buy. Each of these young men braved the world, in a time of unrest, served their country, and returned home to start their families. And best of all- Were all still friends, says Tyson. Weve had many good mem-ories, I dont know that I can pin down the best one, adds Aaron. The Veterans Break-fast was great. Its a really nice thing that the high school hosts each year. We really appreciate it.

Were so thankful she has a chance at life.
