J.K. Symancyk, Meijer’s youngest president in 79 years, will be joining us for the next Business Mat-ters—The Breakfast Series on September 17. Since assuming his new role earlier this year, Symancyk has garnered a lot of media attention as Meijer’s star executive, rising through the ranks in a fast-paced six years. His ideas are attributed to the company’s strong sales growth, and he has recently led the Meijer team in opening a Detroit store. Symancyk has openly shared his thoughts on the retail grocery business as well as his evolving career and journey to leadership. We’re excited to have him speak to the Chamber’s Business Matters attendees this month. Plus, we’ll be hearing a community update on the Michigan Street Corridor Plan from Suzanne Schultz, planning director for the City of Grand Rapids.

Breakfast with Legislators Returns This Month

Are you a business owner or senior manager looking for a group that gives you feedback on some of the tough business issues you are facing? How about the opportunity to meet with people who have been through similar situations and use their experi-ence as a guide or sounding board? Join the CEO and Manage-ment Roundtable offered by the Grand Rapids Chamber, a rewarding program that brings participants back year after year. Once a month, groups of 10-13 decision makers meet to discuss opportunities or challenges within their companies and to receive advice on the best course of action—think “Informal Board of Directors.” All discussion is completely confidential and each member of the roundtable has the opportunity to host a session, allowing the group to focus entirely on offering sugges-tions and solutions to you. While the benefits of the roundtable are priceless to a business, the cost for participating is only $75 a year for Chamber mem-bers. If you are interested in joining this program, registrations are currently being accepted for the fall roundtables that begin in October. To register for the program, visit www.grandrapids.org/ceo-roundtable-program or call 616.771.0303. Questions? Contact Wesley Trimpe at 616.771.0342 or [email protected].

ATHENA Award Recipient, from front cover“Jeanne’s success story is one of leading by example. She has helped so many realize their potential and has been a long-time mentor and supporter of women in a wide range of busi-ness and community leadership roles,” said Rick Baker, Presi-dent and CEO of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. Jeanne has lead through an extensive history as a business owner and entrepreneur. Her experience includes a host of board and leadership positions in local and national organiza-tions, seven years as the first female President and CEO of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, and the success-ful creation and sale of a tech business and computer training company in the 1980’s and ‘90’s. She has also advised on city transformation in Grand Rapids, received a gubernatorial ap-pointment for early childhood investment, worked for Con-gressman Vernon J. Ehlers, and served as a White House del-egate on small business. Among her many accomplishments, Jeanne counts a wide range of accolades as both an entrepreneur and a notable woman of achievement in West Michigan history—including being named as one of 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan by the Grand Rapids Business Journal in 2006, 2008, and 2010. “I am ecstatic and greatly humbled to receive this award,” Jeanne told the Chamber. “In reflecting on the women who were nominated this year and who have received this recogni-tion before me, I see great role models who—like me—believe in themselves and have a passion to make a difference in our community.” Ten finalists were chosen from among this year’s outstanding nominations. Along with Jeanne, the Chamber salutes these 2013 ATHENA Award finalists for their courageous leadership and many accomplishments: Lori Baker, Baker Holtz; Stacie Behler, Meijer, Inc.; Gayle Davis, Grand Valley State University; Gayle DeBruyn, Kendall College of Art & Design; Jane Gietzen, Spectrum Health; Meg Goebel, Paul Goebel Group Insurance; Sharon Loughridge, D.A. Blodgett - St. Johns; Monique Sali-nas, Girls Choral Academy; Julie Towner, Rockford Construc-tion. Join us in honoring Jeanne and these outstanding finalists as we celebrate Grand Rapids women entrepreneurs and profes-sionals at the 2013 ATHENA Award Celebration!

And with faster-than-average growth and job cre-ation over the last decade, female entrepreneurs are poised to generate the majority of new jobs over the next few years too.

Inside Grand Rapids (IGR) is now accepting registrations for the Fall Module. A program of the Grand Rapids Chamber’s Center for Community Leadership, IGR provides an intensive, in-depth insight to how our community functions. Whether you’re a new arrival to the city or a professional in new leadership roles, this program can help you successfully engage in the community. Over the course of two and a half days (October 2-4), par-ticipants will go behind the scenes to learn about the city’s lat-est and greatest developments—meeting the dynamic leaders shaping the city’s future and discovering opportunities to be-come involved as individuals or as representative of their orga-nizations. “IGR was an experience like none I’ve had before. I learned about the history of Grand Rapids, how our town has grown over the decades and continues to grow, as well as a behind-the-scenes view of our new cultural growth,” recalled IGR 2012 participant Jenn Groendyke of Lacks Enterprise. “IGR allowed me to network with peers, and I’ve retained those connections.”

The IGR Fall Module will focus on such topics as:• History of Grand Rapids• Arts, Culture & Entertainment• Revitalization of Downtown• Public/Private Partnerships• Community Service and Philanthropy

It’s never easy to lose a beloved pet. Noah’s Pet Cemetery & Pet Crematory has been helping people through the grieving and bereavement period since 1978. With a full line of caskets and urns, memorial markers and jewelry, peaceful grounds, and burial or cremation options for pets of all sizes—from felines to equines—the experienced and caring staff at Noah’s Pet Cemetery & Pet Cremetory handles ev-ery loss with dignity and respect. There is even a private chapel for visitation. “Everyone has a pet so you get to meet all types of people,” said Ellen McGee, president of the woman-owned business. “At Noah’s, we strive to service you and your pet with the most per-sonal, compassionate, and courteous service available.” When asked about being a female entrepreneur, McGee says she doesn’t really notice anything different. It’s still hard work and lots of late hours. “We got into the business by accident,” she admitted. “My husband and I purchased it from the previous owner in 2005… after working for him for seven years.” A Chamber member since their initial purchase, McGee says she likes “knowing that you are in group of people who are working for each other. It’s good to know the Chamber is there if we need help.” Tucked away in a fairly secluded area of Cascade near 28th Street, McGee notes that most people don’t even realize Noah’s Pet Cemetery & Pet Cremetory is there. However, the location provides the beautiful views, private burial sites and communal gardens that pet-owners have come to love—a place where they can come and remember their favorite animal friends. Free consultations and estimates are available. Visit www.noahspetcemetery.com for more info.Member FDIC

Carrol Cook and Pam Olsen first opened their small offset print shop in 1974 under the name Copy Cat and quickly expanded, moving to a larger location and incorporating as Presto Print, Inc. in 1978. Since then, Presto Print has been a full-service offset print shop, offering products from single copies to full color bro-chures and more. Presto Print produces most products in-house and can fulfill almost any print project they encounter. “Thirty-nine years ago, it was unheard of for women to not just own, but also operate all the equipment in a print shop,” mused Olsen of the traditionally male environment. “Most of our male colleagues were very supportive, but a few were not so welcom-ing. We’ve had fun over the years convincing people we were the owner-operators, but most people who notice we’re wom-an-owned enjoy talking about it with us.” The printing industry of today bears little resemblance to the 70’s, but Presto Print has kept up with the industry changes with the latest equipment and talented staff. Presto Print has also become the go-to print shop for several non-profits who value affordable, fair prices and the company’s support of community causes. “We have by nature a commitment to help efforts that pro-mote health, education, social justice, animal welfare and other issues,” noted Sarah Gooden, general manager and the new-est co-owner. Gooden is slated to take charge when Olsen and Cook retire next year. Since the early Copy Cat days, Chamber membership has of-fered beneficial programs and business contacts. “Our relation-ship with the Chamber has proven helpful in marketing and keeping up with business trends,” said Olsen.

Everyone has heard the now familiar voice of Tim Allen listing the charms of each city that makes up Pure Michigan. Many have probably seen handfuls of billboards encouraging a visit to various Michigan beaches. Hello West Michigan believes our state has more to offer than just pretty vacation spots—we’ve got ca-reer opportunities and vibrant communi-ties too. This September, Hello West Michigan will introduce a new crop of billboards in the Chicago area focused on showcas-ing the many career and lifestyle oppor-tunities available in Michigan. The new awareness campaign called “Find Your Reason” is a first for the member-driven talent attraction and retention organiza-tion. “Everyone has a reason for choosing to live in West Michigan,” says Cindy Brown, Executive Director. “Whether it is family nearby, solid career opportunities, or ac-cess to a great lifestyle, everyone has a unique reason and we want to showcase that.” Digital, print, and billboard ads in metro-Chicago will espouse the reasons West Michigan is a great place to work and live. In addition to the ads, the Hello West Michigan campaign will host a website at MiReason.com where people can share and browse their reasons for living in West Michigan as well as discover more about the region. Started by local companies, Hello West Michigan seeks to increase the rate of success member companies have in their efforts to recruit top talent. It collaborates with organizations across the region to help new residents and those interested in relocating find their fit in West Michigan. If you’re planning a trip to Chicago, look for the billboards on I-94 and the ads on public transportation. Staying close to home this fall? Hello West Michigan invites all residents in the region to share their reason for living here on MiReason.com and get the conversation going.
