STARnet Introduction
Main goal: increase science proficiency at the 8th grade level
Focus on addressing 8th grade science standards and benchmarks
Partnerships vital to reaching goal Class for teachers Use of DLE and resource people Use of informal assessment venue/Imiloa
Field Trip Guide DLE and DOE STARcarts
STARnet Project Goals1. Develop a professional development course for
teachers focusing on the use of standards-based curriculum for 8th grade Earth/Space Science
2. Use research-based teaching and learning in professional development to aid in increasing science proficiency
3. Incorporate Distance Learning Enrichment as a mechanism to bring resources into classrooms otherwise unavailable due to time, monetary and transportation challenges
4. Involve parents and family members in standards-based education
5. Use informal, engaging assessment to measure learning
ED 694 - Voyaging Through the Earth and Space Sciences: An Expedition for 8th Grade Teachers
Address State of Hawai`i 8th Grade Science Standards for the Physical, Earth and Space Sciences (HCPS III) using lessons from FAST 3, Change Over Time, and Teaching Science as Inquiry: Astronomy
Experience exhibits developed by ’Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai’i exemplifying some of these standards to enhance formal learning experiences
Use distance learning technology and enrichment to bring resources into classrooms and expand interactions between learners
Course Goals:

Lessons from FAST 3, Change Over Time, and Teaching Science as Inquiry: Astronomy as Inquiry
CRDG Resources:
Standard distance teaching of courses Limited to high bandwidth, high cost systems
Concerned with course administrative costs and credits
Normally involving large numbers of students
What it is not:
What it is: Focused on the local classroom Live synchronous and/or recorded asynchronous

Talking Communities is much more than a cutting edge Internet communications organization. It is people. Ordinary people with an extraordinary vision. People who come from many walks of life, people who come from a wide geographic area. They are united by a common dream ... a dream to bring the world closer together ... a dream to allow businesses to grow and prosper ... a dream to provide education to the world ... a dream to draw scattered families together ... and a dream to facilitate the efforts of non-profit organizations in the fulfillment of their missions.

Hawaii DOE Distance Learning Multimedia Carts
Hawaii DOE Distance Learning Multimedia Carts
Used STARnet prototype to created more flexible and versatile system for everyday classroom use. They can video-conference, surf the web, play DVDs and more wirelessly.
Incorporated new components that make the system easier to control from anywhere in the classroom like ergonomics adjustable LCD monitor, DLP projector and wireless keyboard and mouse.
Added new content components such as software and a digital microscope with slide and training kits for all appropriate science grades.

Units are being delivered to all 9 schools in the district. Each will get at least 2 and possibly up to 4 per school depending on their integration into lesson plans and usage by teachers.
A main goal of this project is to get teachers enthused about the world of information, resources, multimedia and other classes just like theirs happening out there and we want to bring that to some of the remotest classrooms in the country.
Another is to introduce our kids to the world in a live and interactive way not available to us at their age. The
age of Video Conferencing has begun and they
should be on the forefront of tomorrow’s business
by learning how to use this technology.
Hawaii DOE Distance LearningHow We Are Using Them
Hawaii DOE Distance LearningHow We Are Using Them
We plan on these carts being used in many ways. A few uses should have the most immediate and noticeable effects in the classroom and they involve online content supplementation and video conferencing collaboration.
With an online community bulletin board we are beginning to share links to video, animations and other resources that apply to lesson plan standards for each grade year. We hope to create an online resource of all kinds of multimedia enriching education that all the teachers in Hawaii would have access to. Thereby allowing you to integrate captivating multimedia into your lesson plan and better illustrate the semantics behind the
syntax.
Hawaii DOE Distance LearningThe Online Community
Hawaii DOE Distance LearningThe Online Community
With the development and popularity of websites like MySpace and other youth oriented online community sites children are embracing a digital identity while most people over 25 have no clue what’s going on there.
While the pitfalls of these kinds of online communities can be troublesome and inappropriate for school time they are generally blocked from school computers. So, these kids are creating these pages even if they don’t own a computer! They make it on their cellphones or any computer they can get their hands on. What does this say? They want to be part of online communities not
only for the sense of connection but also for the recognition and accomplishment of their webpage or its design.

There are many new online sites and search engines that can provide appropriate, high quality streaming video to you on demand which are easy to access and completely free.
They include:www.video.aol.com www.video.yahoo.com
www.video.google.com www.video.msn.com www.youtube.com www.rocketboom.com
These are just a few, there are literally millions of clips out there to choose from that can greatly increase the impact of a lesson.
Think about explaining Armstrong landing on the Moon to your class and then imagine showing those first steps and letting them hear those timeless words “ One small step for man…” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QX3mE6N-2c

As paths and resources to these online wellsprings are shared in the online community we will have an instantly available new catalog of information that can be integrated into the lesson plan.
As we forge these new connections a greater level of collaboration between the schools in our district will be possible and new connections with schools and places all over the world will begin to emerge.
As we develop these techniques and technologies into our classrooms we will surpass our expectations and set our goal beyond nation standards when it comes to distancelearning education. Logistically there is no place better to champion distance learning technology than here in Hawaii!
