    Transportation Tiger Team

    and Sylmar Project

Named for our passion for transit, the California State University

Northridge student-intern chapter of the renowned Transit

Coalition tackles pressing mass-transit and mobility issues in the

San Fernando Valley with never before seen ferocity.Utilizing community integration, technological prowess, and tiger-

like strength - the team is currently undertaking an ambitious

study of Sylmar Metrolink, Metro Lines 230 and 236 and its

connectivity to surrounding regional centers for the people of Los

Angeles.By May, a report detailing our recommendations will be published

for all future students, community leaders, advocacy groups, and

the online community. It is our belief that this report will spark an

active, on-going discussion, ultimately leading to well-planned

    action. 3

Initial Site Visit After visiting the Sylmar Metrolink Station, riding the 230 and 236 buses,

and conducting an initial survey, there are several observations toaddress. The common theme the survey produced was that, in regards

to what riders sought as improvements for the bus routes, the buses

need to increase their frequency and be on time. In fact, as a team we

experienced that the buses are not always on time; according to the bus

schedule our bus was 15 minutes late. While riding the buses it was

observed that the sidewalks were of very poor quality, sometimesmissing all together, and clearly did not meet ADA requirements. Also

the bus stop signage was very small and hard to see. Lastly, most of the

stops didnt have benches or shade.

    15

Sylmar sidewalks do not meet ADA requirements.

    Conclusion...

We found that the main problems were availability and frequency of

buses, as well as buses not being on time.

Please note that on this site visit, the initial goal was to observeonly. However, it was decided to test out the questionnaires whilethere. Our final findings will include more questionnaires in order toadequately reflect population.

Respondents were glad to talk with us and answer the six questionswhen told we were California State University Northridge studentsinterning for The Transit Coalition and we were collecting data thatmay help improve their bus experience.

We will adjust questionnaires for ease and to address sidewalkconcerns for ADA requirements, and bus stop comfort and safety.

Further research is required to adequately explain issues and topresent recommendations.
