• ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FIREARM POINTED IN A SAFE DIREC-TION. Never point a firearm at anyone or anything you do notintend to shoot whether or not it is loaded. This is particularlyimportant when loading, unloading, or field stripping the firearm.ALWAYS control the direction of the firearm.

• ALWAYS TREAT EVERY FIREARM AS IF IT IS LOADED ANDWILL FIRE. Do not take anyone’s word that the firearm isunloaded – always check for yourself. Never pass your firearm toanother person until the action is open and you visually checkthat it is unloaded. Keep your firearm unloaded and safely storedwhen not in use.

• NEVER PLACE YOUR FINGER INSIDE THE TRIGGER GUARDOR ON THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU INTEND TO FIRE. Ensurethat other objects do not touch the trigger.

• ALWAYS BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYONDIT. Always be sure of where the bullet will strike and shoot onlywhere there is a safe back stop free of obstructions, water orother surfaces which can cause ricochets. Be sure your bulletwill stop behind your target. Bullets can glance off many sur-faces like rocks or the surface of water and travel in unpre-dictable directions with considerable velocity. Do not fire ran-domly into the sky.

• NEVER CROSS OBSTACLES SUCH AS FENCES ORSTREAMS WITH A LOADED FIREARM. Always make certainyour firearm is unloaded before crossing a fence, climbing a tree,jumping a ditch or negotiating other obstacles.

• SAFE FIREARM HANDLING IS YOUR PERSONAL RESPONSI-BILITY AT ALL TIMES. Firearms are dangerous and can causeserious injury or death if they are misused or used inappropriate-ly. Safety must be the prime consideration of any one who ownsor handles firearms. Accidents are the result of violating the rulesof safe firearm handling and common sense. Firearm safetytraining is available. Contact your firearms dealer, law enforce-ment agency, local sportsman’s club, etc. for availability.

• YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FIREARM AT ALL TIMES.In owning a firearm, you must undertake full-time responsibilityfor your firearm’s safety and security. You must protect yourselfand all others against injury or death from misuse of the firearm24 hours a day.

• FIREARM SECURITY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You mustsecure firearms safely from children and/or unauthorized users.Your firearm should always be kept unloaded and locked whennot in use. Never assume that the use of the provided lock issufficient to safely secure your firearm. You must always evaluateyour personal situation and employ the security systems thatmeet your needs and prevent children and unauthorized usersfrom gaining access to your firearm.

• APPROPRIATE USE FOR YOUR FIREARM MEANS USINGYOUR FIREARM FOR LEGAL PURPOSES. For example - targetshooting, hunting and lawful resistance of deadly criminal force.It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in compliance withall applicable laws and ordinances regarding the use of yourfirearm.

• NEVER RELY ON MECHANICAL FEATURES ALONE. Only yoursafe firearm-handling habits will ensure the safe use of yourfirearm. This is your responsibility.

• ALWAYS SAFELY STORE AND SECURE YOUR FIREARM. Safeand secure storage of your firearm is one of your most importantresponsibilities. It is a full-time responsibility. You must alwayssecure your firearm and ammunition separately so that they arenot accessible to children and/or other unauthorized persons.

• NEVER KEEP AMMUNITION IN THE SAME LOCATION ASTHE FIREARM. Store each in a separate and secure place.

• ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION THAT IS SPECIFIED FORUSE WITH FIREARMS every time you handle your firearm forcleaning and maintenance.

• ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND EAR PROTECTORS THAT ARESPECIFIED FOR USE WITH FIREARMS every time you dis-charge your firearm. Make sure others in the vicinity of whereyou will be shooting do so as well.

• NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILESHOOTING. Do not use your firearm if you are on any medica-tion which impairs, even slightly, your mental or physical ability.

• ALWAYS HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION. Discharging firearmsin poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammu-nition may result in exposure to lead and other substancesknown to cause birth defects, reproductive harm, and other seri-ous physical injury. Review the warnings and labels for all ammu-nition and cleaning products carefully. Wash hands thoroughlyafter exposure.

• BEFORE HANDLING ANY FIREARM, UNDERSTAND ITSOPERATION. Not all firearms are the same. Familiarize yourselfwith the mechanical features of any firearm you intend to use. Ifyou feel uncertain about any operational aspects of your firearm,please contact Thompson/Center, before proceeding with itsoperation.

• NEVER ALLOW A FIREARM TO BE USED BY INDIVIDUALS

WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND ITS SAFE OPERATION OR

HAVE NOT READ THESE FIREARM SAFETY RULES.

• ALWAYS USE THE CORRECT AMMUNITION FOR YOUR PAR-TICULAR FIREARM as indicated by the marking on the firearm.Never use non-standard, reloaded, or “handloaded” ammunitionwhich has not been subjected to internal ballistic pressure test-ing.

• BEWARE OF BARREL OBSTRUCTIONS Be sure the barrel isclear of obstructions before shooting. Mud, water, snow or otherobjects may inadvertently lodge in the barrel bore. A smallobstruction can cause a dangerous increase in pressure and maydamage your firearm and cause injury to yourself and others.

• BE SURE ALL ACCESSORIES, SUCH AS HOLSTERS. GRIPS,SLINGS, SCOPES AND OTHER ACCESSORIES ARE COMPAT-IBLE with the firearm and that the accessories do not interferewith safe operation. It is your responsibility to understand andfollow all of the instructions in this manual,as well as those whichmay be supplied with your ammunition and any accessory.

• NEVER DISASSEMBLE YOUR FIREARM beyond the field strip-ping procedure outlined in this manual. Improper disassembly orreassembly of your firearm may be dangerous and can lead toserious injury or death.

• NEVER MANIPULATE, ADJUST OR CHANGE ANY OF THEINTERNAL COMPONENTS OF YOUR FIREARM UNLESSSPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED TO DO SO IN THIS MANUAL.Improper manipulation of any other internal component mayaffect the safety and reliability of your firearm and may causeserious injury or death.

ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS TO CHILDREN WHEN THEY ARESTORED IN AN IRRESPONSIBLE AND UNSAFE MANNER. FORYOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS, IT IS IMPERA-TIVE THAT YOU KEEP YOUR FIREARM LOCKED ANDUNLOADED IN A SECURE PLACE. • ALWAYS SECURE YOUR FIREARM IN A MANNER THAT WILLPREVENT UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS. Whenever your firearm isnot in use, keep it unloaded and locked. Your safety and thesafety of others requires that you always secure and store yourfirearm in a manner that will prevent unauthorized access. Neverleave a firearm unattended unless it is locked, unloaded andsecured.

• ALWAYS USE THE LOCK PROVIDED BY THOMPSON/CEN-TER TO SECURE YOUR FIREARM. Please read and follow theinstructions packaged separately for the use of this lock. A lock,when properly used, can be an effective tool in preventing unau-thorized access to your firearm. There are other alternative locksand safe storage containers available in the marketplace whichmay also be appropriate for your particular needs. Consult yourlocal gun shop, hardware store, or local police department forguidance on the variety of other safe storage devices or prac-tices which may be appropriate for your particular needs. By pur-chasing this firearm you have accepted the responsibility of safe-ly securing the firearm at all times and preventing its unautho-rized use. Never assume that the use of this lock alone is suffi-cient to safely secure your firearm. It is your personal responsi-bility to select and use whatever measures or practices that willenable you to be absolutely certain that your firearm is secure atall times.

• ALWAYS STORE YOUR FIREARM AND AMMUNITION SEPA-RATELY so that they are not accessible to children or otherunauthorized persons. Safe and secure storage of your firearmand ammunition are your responsibility. It is a full-time responsi-bility.

• NEVER ASSUME THAT A “HIDING” PLACE IS A SECURESTORAGE METHOD. Others may be aware of your storage loca-tion or come upon it by chance. It is your personal responsibilityto use common sense when storing your firearm and ammunitionand to always make sure they are not accessible to children orother unauthorized persons.

• NEVER TRANSPORT A LOADED FIREARM. When transportingyour firearm, be sure it is unloaded and locked. Safe and securetransportation of your firearm is your responsibility.

• ALWAYS FOLLOW THE LAW. Many jurisdictions have laws thatmake it a crime to keep a firearm unlocked and in an area acces-sible to children or others. Keeping a firearm locked andunloaded when not in use is not only common sense safety prac-tice... IT IS THE LAW. You must be familiar with all local, state,and federal laws regarding the safe storage and transportation ofyour firearm. Failure to know and follow the law may result inunauthorized access or use of your firearm by another. Obey alllaws relating to the storage and transportation of firearms. Yourlocal police department or gun shop can furnish you with avail-able information on storing and/or transporting a firearm safelyand legally.

• YOUR FIREARM IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You must preventyour firearm from being stolen or from being used by untrained orunqualified individuals. Keep it locked, unloaded and securedwhen not in use.

• Use the lock provided to prevent unauthorized use, follow theinstructions supplied with the lock.

• Never leave the key with the stored firearm.

PREPARATION FOR FIRINGWARNING: FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE FIREARMSAFETY REQUIREMENTS WILL CAUSE SERIOUS PER-SONAL INJURY OR DEATH TO YOU OR OTHERS.

• ALWAYS TREAT ALL FIREARMS AS IF THEY ARE LOADED.

• ALWAYS BE SURE THAT ALL CYLINDERS AND ACTIONS OFFIREARMS ARE OPEN, THAT CHAMBER(S) ARE CLEAR OFCARTRIDGES OR SHELLS, MAGAZINES ARE REMOVED ORUNLOADED, AND THAT FIREARMS ARE POINTING IN A SAFEDIRECTION.

• ALWAYS WEAR ADEQUATE AND PROPER EAR PROTEC-TORS SPECIFIED FOR FIREARM USE to prevent permanentdamage to your hearing. Make sure others who are nearby arewearing ear protection as well.

• ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES SPECIFIED FOR USEWITH FIREARMS, whether indoors or out. Safety glasses shouldprotect your eyes from the firing flash and particles associatedwith the discharge of ammunition. Failure to wear the proper eyeprotection creates a risk of personal injury from particle or debrisspitting or ricochets.

• ALWAYS BE ALERT AND ALWAYS FOLLOW THE SAFETYINSTRUCTIONS OF THE RANGE OFFICER. Never shoot if youare tired, cold or impaired in any way.

• ALWAYS BE AWARE OF OTHER PEOPLE so that persons donot accidentally walk into the line of fire.

• THE SHOOTER (AND ALL OTHERS IN THE SHOOTING AREA)MUST ALWAYS BE IN A POSITION THAT IS OUT OF THELINE OF FIRE and are not within an area where they may bestruck by a ricochet or particles spitting from a firearm, or byejected cases from some types of firearms.

• NEVER SHOOT AT SURFACES THAT MAY CAUSE A RICO-CHET. Always select a place to shoot that has a safe backstop,is free from obstructions and has no surfaces which may cause aricochet.

• NEVER FIRE RANDOMLY INTO THE SKY. Always select aplace to shoot that has a safe backstop.

• NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILESHOOTING OR HANDLING ANY FIREARM.

• A firearm and ammunition are a system and must work together.There are different types of ammunition for different types offirearms. Your firearm has been designed for ammunition of aspecific type and a specific gauge or caliber. It is important toselect the proper ammunition for your firearm.

• Different combinations of bullet velocity, bullet weight andfirearm weight can have major impact on felt recoil; a high levelof felt recoil can be uncomfortable to some shooters.

INSPECTING ANDINITIAL ASSEMBLY

• Your T/C® COMPASS™ rifle comes completely assembled fromthe factory except for the bolt assembly, which has beenremoved for transportation and storage. The bolt assembly ispacked separately in the shipping carton.

WARNING: THE BOLT ASSEMBLY IN THE T/C®

COMPASS™ RIFLE IS MATCHED SPECIFICALLY TOTHE RECEIVER. BOLT ASSEMBLIES ARE NOT INTER-

CHANGEABLE BETWEEN RIFLES. THE LAST FOUR DIGITS OFTHE RIFLE’S SERIAL NUMBER ARE MARKED ON THE COR-RECT BOLT SHROUD (FIGURE3) AND BOLT HEAD (FIGURE 4)FOR THAT PARTICULAR RIFLE.NO ATTEMPT SHOULD BEMADE TO USE ANY BOLT IN ARECEIVER THAT DOES NOTHAVE MATCHING NUMBERSAS INJURY AND/OR DEATH TOTHE SHOOTER ORBYSTANDERS AND DAMAGETO PROPERTY MAY RESULT.

INSPECTING YOUR RIFLE

• Grasp the rifle, keeping yourfinger outside the trigger guardand off the trigger, point themuzzle in a safe direction.

• Check to be certain that thechamber is empty (FIGURE 5).

• Press and hold the magazinelatch to the rear to release themagazine (FIGURE 6).

• Orient the rifle as shown toallow the magazine to comeout of the rifle when the maga-zine latch is released (FIGURE 7).

• Remove the magazine andensure that it is empty (FIGURE 8).

• Remove the T/C® COMPASS™

Identifier from the barrel (FIG-URE 9). The rifle should not beused with the Identifierattached.

INSTALLING THE BOLTASSEMBLY

NOTE: Don’t try to move theSafety Lever with the bolt out ofthe rifle. The bolt must be in therifle in the closed position withthe firing pin cocked in order tomove the Safety Lever.

• Grasp the bolt by its handleand slide the bolt forward intothe receiver about one inch asshown (FIGURE 10).

• Rotate the bolt upward by thehandle (FIGURE 11) until thebolt stop engages the boltstop tracking groove in thebolt itself (FIGURE 12).

The Safety Lever

• Located on the right side at therear of the bolt, the safety leverhas three (3) positions that areset by the user when the bolt isin the closed and cocked posi-tion: “BL” (BOLT LOCKED-SAFE), “S” SAFE and “F” FIRE (FIGURE 14).

• Cocking indicator protrudesfrom the back of the bolt whenthe rifle is cocked (FIGURE 15).The indicator is hidden whenthe firing pin is in the FIREDposition (FIGURE 16). • Open the bolt (FIGURE 20) andinspect the bore for obstruc-tions (and follow the cleaninginstructions in this manual ifnecessary).

• Do not load the rifle until youare ready to use it.

• Just prior to firing, open thebolt fully and then insert theloaded magazine and “snap” itinto place - tipping the back infirst and then lifting the frontuntil it “clicks” into the lockedposition (FIGURE 24).

• With the bolt closed on anempty chamber, make certainthat the safety is in the “SAFE”LOAD/UNLOAD position (FIG-URE 25). You can move thesafety lever only when the fir-ing pin is cocked. If the firingpin is in the fired position, liftthe bolt handle fully and thenreturn it to the closed positionto allow the safety lever to bemoved.

• Open the bolt and draw it fullyto the rear, then push forwardand close bolt handle (with thebolt handle turned fully down)to strip a round from the maga-zine and put that round intothe chamber.

• Grasp the rifle with one handon the fore-end and other handon the grip with the trigger fin-ger resting along and outsideof the trigger guard. Raise therifle and pull buttstock firmly into shoulder.

• Push the safety lever to the fully forward “FIRE” position (FIG-URE 26).

• The rifle will now fire when pressure is applied to the trigger.

• When you are sure of your target and what is beyond it, placeyour finger on trigger and gently pull the trigger until the riflefires.

• You may continue to fire the rifle by fully opening and closing thebolt, which will eject the spent case and feed a new cartridgeinto the rifle, and then pulling the trigger. You may repeat thisprocess until the magazine is empty and the chamber is empty.

MAKING TRIGGERADJUSTMENTS

WARNING: ALWAYS ENSURE THAT THE FIREARM ISUNLOADED BEFORE ADJUSTING THE TRIGGER ORDRY FIRING.

• The trigger has been adjusted at the factory for optimal perfor-mance.

• We recommend that you have a competent gunsmith adjust yourtrigger if needed. Do not attempt trigger adjustments unless youare confident in your ability tofollow these instructions fortrigger adjustment.

• Open the bolt fully (FIGURE 43).

• Remove the magazine from therifle and set it aside.

• Press and hold the bolt stopand remove the bolt from therifle (FIGURE 44).

• Remove the barrelledaction from the stockto adjust the trigger.Use a 5/32˝ hexwrench to removethe 2 bolts (FIGURES45 and 46).

MAKING TRIGGER ADJUSTMENTS CONTINUED

• There are three nuts on the trig-ger. The two nuts above the trig-ger adjust the tension on thespring that controls the weight ofpull and then lock against oneanother (FIGURE 47). These arereferred to as the weight of pulladjustment nut and weight of pulllock nut.

• The single nut below the triggeris used to lock the over-travelstop screw in its setting onceadjusted. It is referred to as theover-travel adjustment lock nut(FIGURE 47).

• The purpose of the over-traveladjustment screw is to adjust the amount of over-travel of the trigger.Over-travel is the amount of movement of the trigger beyond thatnecessary to complete its purpose (releasing the firing pin from thecocked position in this case).

CAUTION: If you screw the over-travel adjustment screw in too far, youwill not be able to pull the trigger enough to release the sear.

• Ideally the over-travel adjustment screw should be screwed in as faras possible but still allow enough trigger movement to consistentlyrelease the sear when the trigger is pulled.

• To make adjustments, you will need two (thin) 1/4", open-endwrenches, and a small screwdriver. Also, have a bottle of finger nailpolish handy to “lock” the screw and nuts in place after you have fin-ished all the adjustments.

• Start by adjusting for over-travel. Loosen all three nutsslightly away from the trig-ger and from each otherwith a 1/4" open-endwrench (FIGURE 48).

• Using a small screwdriver,turn the over-travel adjust-ment screw clockwise untilit bottoms out. Back thescrew up 1/4 to 1/2 turnfrom bottom.

• Snug the over-travel adjust-ment lock nut on the screwagainst the trigger to holdthe screw in this position.

• Move the weight of pull locknut down to contact thetrigger (FIGURE 49). Lowerthe weight of pull adjust-ment nut against the locknut and try the weight ofpull by dry-firing the action.This is the minimum weightof pull and minimum over-travel.

• Once adjusted, use the two1/4˝ wrenches to ensure thatthe weight of pull lock nut islocked against the adjust-ment nut. Also, check thatthe over-travel lock nut istight against the trigger(FIGURE 50).

• Put a small dab of fingernail polish on the threads tolock all of the nuts in posi-tion.

• Don't put thread lock such as Loctite® on trigger screws or nuts.Instead, use a drop of nail polish on trigger screw threads to holdthe screws or nuts in place. Thread locker products can seize thesmall screws and nuts used in triggers, possibly making them verydifficult to adjust or remove at a later date.

LUBRICATION POINTS

• A single drop of light, non-con-gealing oil can be applied tothe sear engagement surface(FIGURE 51).

• The pivot points of the searand trigger can also be lubri-cated with a single drop oflight, non-congealing oil (FIGURE 52).

• Make certain the recoil lug isengaged with the stock correctlywhen the gun is reassembled (FIGURE 53).

• Reassemble the barreled actioninto the stock. Tighten the two5/32˝ hex head bolts at eitherend of the action (FIGURES 54and 55) until snug. The bolts areboth the same length and canbe interchanged.

WARNING: INCORRECTASSEMBLY MAYRESULT IN DAMAGE TO

THE FIREARM AND CREATEAN UNSAFE CONDITION.

NOTE: Be certain thatthe two trigger (fire-control) assembly pinsare centered side toside (not protrudingfrom either side) in thereceiver whenreassembling the bar-relled action into thestock (FIGURE 56). Ifthese pins are too farto the left or right theywill interfere with thestock and you will notbe able to engage thestock takedownscrews.

Dry Firing Note:

Be certain that the chamber isunloaded and the magazine isremoved from the rifle. Keep thefirearm pointed in a safe direction.The T/C® COMPASS™ rifle can bedry fired without damage to the fir-ing pin or other components. Todry fire, cock the rifle by lifting thebolt handle fully and returning it tothe closed position and thenpulling the trigger - with the safetylever in the FIRE position.

ALWAYS FOLLOW THE RULES OF SAFE FIREARM HANDLING.

• Before using your firearm for the first time, it should be cleaned.

• Your firearm was treated at the factory with either a preservativeor oil to protect it against corrosion during shipping and storage.

• Preservative and oil should be wiped from the bore, chamberand exposed areas using a clean swab or patch before using thefirearm.

CAUTION: Never disassemble your firearm beyond the instructionsin the Field Stripping and Inspection sections of this manual.

• Purchase cleaning supplies from your firearms dealer that arespecifically designated for your type and caliber of firearm. Manysuppliers offer these in kit form for your convenience.

• Follow the instructions provided with your cleaning supplies.

NOTE: A basic firearm cleaning kit should include: a brass borebrush and a cleaning jag of appropriate size for the bore beingcleaned, high-quality gun cleaning solvent and gun oil/lubricant,cotton cleaning patches and a cleaning rod that is long enough to push the brush and jag completely through the barrel.

• Remove excessive firing residue from the bore and chamberusing a properly fitted brass brush dipped in gun cleaning sol-vent. Finish the bore cleaning process by running a dry cottoncloth patch through the bore to remove residue and solvent.

• Clean the exterior of the firearm using a non-abrasive cleaningcloth.

• After cleaning, lightly coat the metal parts, internal and externalwith a high quality firearm oil.

• Whenever your firearm has been exposed to sand, dust, extremehumidity, water or other adverse conditions, it must be cleanedand lubricated.

CAUTION: Some cleaners can cause damage to your firearms. Youshould avoid prolonged solvent immersion and prolonged ultrason-ic cleaning of your firearm. Choice of solvent should be restrictedto those products specifically developed for firearms maintenance.Damage to a firearm’s finish may occur if these cautions areignored. Ammoniated solvents or other strong alkaline solvents,should not be used on any Thompson/Center firearm. Cleaning isessential to ensure the proper functioning of your firearm.

• Your firearm is a precision instrument. To ensure reliable functionit is necessary to follow a routine maintenance procedure. Afterfiring your firearm, be sure to unload it following the procedureoutlined in the section entitled “Inspecting Your Firearm” beforeperforming any cleaning or maintenance procedure.

• Remove any gun cleaning solution, oil and fingerprints from theoutside surfaces of the firearm. (Finger moisture, if left, couldstart a corrosion process.)

MAINTENANCE BEFORE STORAGE• When storing, do not encase your firearm in anything that will

attract or hold moisture, for example, leather or heavy cloth.Also, do not store guns with a plug inserted in the barrel for thiscan be a contributing factor to moisture accumulation. If yourfirearm is to be stored for an extended period, the bore, chamberand internal surfaces should be oiled with a high-quality lubricat-ing oil or preservative intended for firearms. The external parts;receiver, bolt and barrel should be coated with an anti-rust oil.Before using your firearm again, be sure to clean it. Every timeyou clean your firearm, check it for signs of wear. If wear isnoted, do not use the firearm. Return it to Thompson/Center forservice or have it checked by a qualified gunsmith.

DETAILED BOLT DISASSEMBLY FOR CLEANING

• The bolt may be disassembledfor cleaning (FIGURE 57 & 58).

• Do not attempt to disassemblethe firing pin assembly beyondwhat is covered in this manual.

• The bolt handle is held in place underspring tension. This spring tension mustbe released to allow the bolt handle tobe removed from the bolt body, therebyallowing the firing pin assembly to beremoved from the bolt body.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The first step in thisprocess - with the bolt closed on an empty chamber in the rifle - isto place the safety lever in the SAFE position (FIGURE 59).

• Remove the bolt from the rifle.

• When the bolt was removedfrom the receiver, the firing pinwas cocked (FIGURE 60).

• Uncock the firing pin. To dothis, grasp the bolt body in onehand and the bolt shroud androtate the bolt shroud to movethe firing pin assembly from thecocked position to theuncocked position (FIGURES 61 and 62).

• Press the bolt shroud against ahard surface to relieve springtension and at the same time -pull the bolt handle clear of thebolt body (FIGURE 63).

• After the bolt handle is pulledfree of the bolt body (FIGURE64) the firing pin assembly canbe removed from the bolt body- allowing it to be cleaned andlightly lubricated.

NOTE: Some jiggling of the firingpin assembly may be required asyou pull on it to allow it to bepulled free of the bolt body.

• After the firing pin assembly ispulled free of the bolt body thebolt head retainer pin and bolthead can be removed from thebolt body - allowing them to becleaned and lightly lubricated(FIGURE 65).

COMPASS™ RIFLE ISMATCHED SPECIFICALLY TOTHE RECEIVER. BOLTASSEMBLIES ARE NOT INTER-CHANGEABLE BETWEENRIFLES. THE LAST FOUR DIG-ITS OF THE RIFLE’S SERIALNUMBER ARE MARKED ONTHE CORRECT BOLT SHROUD(FIGURE 66) AND BOLT HEAD(FIGURE 67) FOR THAT PAR-TICULAR RIFLE. NO ATTEMPTSHOULD BE MADE TO USEANY BOLT IN A RECEIVERTHAT DOES NOT HAVEMATCHING NUMBERS ASINJURY AND/OR DEATH TOTHE SHOOTER ORBYSTANDERS AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY MAY RESULT.

THE BOLT ASSEMBLY IS PACKAGED SEPARATELY IN THE BOXAS SHIPPED FROM THE FACTORY. BEFORE INSTALLING THEBOLT ASSEMBLY INTO THE RIFLE, CONFIRM THAT THE LASTFOUR DIGITS OF THE RIFLE’S SERIAL NUMBER ALSOAPPEAR ON THE BOLT SHROUD AND BOLT HEAD. IF A RIFLEAND BOLT ASSEMBLY ARE MIS-MATCHED, THE ENTIRE RIFLEMUST BE RETURNED TO THE FACTORY FOR PROPER FIT-TING OF A NEW BOLT ASSEMBLY THAT WILL BEAR THE LASTFOUR DIGITS OF THE RIFLE’S SERIAL NUMBER.

• When reassembling the bolt,put the bolt head and bolt headretaining pin back into the boltbody. The retaining pin will onlyenter the bolt body and bolthead in one direction - wheneverything is lined up correctly(FIGURE 68).

• Return the bolt head into thebolt body (FIGURE 69) andinstall the bolt head retainingpin.

• Then, return the firing pinassembly into the bolt body.Keep the firing pin assembly inthe uncocked position (FIGURE 70).

• Press the bolt shroud against ahard surface to compressspring slightly. Insert the bolthandle into the bolt body slot(FIGURE 71).

• Pull on the bolt handle toensure that it is assembled cor-rectly and held securely inplace by the cocked firing pinassembly. If the bolt handlecomes free when pulled, it wasnot installed properly, repeatassembly procedure and try topull the handle out again until itremains in place when pulled.

• After the bolt handle is re-installed, the firing pin mustnow be re-cocked by graspingthe bolt body in one hand andturning the bolt shroud with theother hand. An audible “click”indicates that the firing pin isre-cocked (FIGURES 72, 73and 74).

LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTYThis warranty is granted by Smith & Wesson Corp. doing businessas Thompson/Center Arms. This warranty is effective from the dateof purchase for the lifetime of the original retail purchaser of anyfactory finished firearm. In order to be eligible for service under thiswarranty, the original retail purchaser must return a completedauthorized warranty card or register online athttp://www.tcarms.com/warranty-details/registration within thirty(30) days of purchase of such firearm. With respect to such firearm,this warranty supersedes any and all other warranties.

Thompson/Center Arms brand firearms are warranted to be freefrom defects in material and workmanship. Any such defects ofwhich Smith & Wesson receives written notice by the original retailpurchaser will be remedied without charge within a reasonable timeafter such notification and delivery of the firearm as providedbelow.

Warranty claims (in writing) and the firearm or part thereof con-cerned should be delivered, postage prepaid, to the factory atSmith & Wesson, 2100 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, MA 01104, Attn:Service Department. In addition, a copy of the bill of sale in theoriginal retail purchaser’s name, or, where applicable, a copy of ATFForm 4473 indicating date of purchase must be included. Pleaseinclude your physical address and phone number. You must complywith all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations inthe shipment of firearms to Smith & Wesson.

Warranty claims should state the model and, where applicable, theserial number of the firearm concerned and the description of thedifficulty experienced. It is recommended that shipments beinsured by the owner, since Smith & Wesson will accept no respon-sibility for loss or damage in transit. Transportation and insurancecharges for return to the owner will be paid by Smith & Wesson ifthe claim is covered by this warranty.

If the work required is not covered by our “Limited LifetimeWarranty” you will receive a quotation which must be authorized byyou. No actual work will be done without your approval. Returnshipments can be shipped via UPS, FedEx or mail at your cost.Repaired product will be shipped back to you via FedEx requiringan adult signature upon receipt.

Smith & Wesson will not be responsible for:

• Defects or malfunctions resulting from careless handling, unau-thorized adjustments or modifications made or attempted by any-one other than a qualified gunsmith following authorized proce-dures, or failure to follow the instructions in Safety & Instructionmanual that was provided with the firearm from the factory.

• Use of defective or improper ammunition and/or propellant, cor-rosion, neglect, abuse, ordinary wear and tear, or unreasonableuse.

• Use of replacement parts, including but not limited to barrels andsprings, other than factory or authorized parts.

• Criminal misuse, negligence, or use under the influence of drugsor alcohol.

Services that were performed by the Thompson/Center ArmsCustom Shop and/or that are performed by the Smith & WessonRepair Department do not void this warranty. This warranty givesyou specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights whichvary from state to state.

NOTE: All liability is excluded in the event that the instructions pro-vided in the Safety and Instruction manual that was provided withthe firearm from the factory are not observed.
