PETERSBURG, Fla. — Following three weeks of rest during the NASL’s midseason break, the Atlanta Silverbacks return to league play in an Independence Day rematch of the Spring Season finale against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Atlanta’s first game of the Fall Season will kick off at 6 p.m. from Al Lang Stadium and will stream on ESPN3. Head coach Gary Smith and the Silverbacks (1-5-4, 8 points) started the 2015 season, his first with the club, on a five-match unbeaten run that saw Atlanta reach as high as second in the NASL table. The 10-game Spring Season finished, however, with three consecutive league losses and a U.S. Open Cup fourth-round exit against the New York Red Bulls, but a table climb could be in order if the Silverbacks can find an early rhythm through the final 20 games, including five of the first six away from home. Atlanta enters searching for revenge after the Rowdies downed the Silverbacks, 3-0, on June 13 to close the Spring Season for both sides. Three second-half goals — from Corey Hertzog (60’), Martin Nunez (75’), and a Georgi Hristov penalty (PK, 89’) — powered Tampa Bay to a victory that brought Thomas Rongen’s side within a single point of the New York Cosmos, the eventual champions of the first split season. Despite sitting 11th in the table, Atlanta finds itself just six points adrift of the Carolina RailHawks and Minnesota United FC, the teams tied for a third-place position that would likely yield one of the three remaining NASL playoff berths. Joining the Cosmos in the four-team Championship will be the Fall Season champion, the Woosnam Cup winner for the league’s best regular season record, and the top remaining side in the combined table. Atlanta and Tampa Bay will both take an early Fall Season hit from the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which begins July 7 and will feature seven NASL players. Silverbacks goalkeeper Steward Ceus will join the Haitian team for his first Gold Cup, while former Atlanta midfielder Richie Menjivar, who has played 284 league minutes for the Rowdies this season, will be on duty with the El Salvador national team. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Atlanta Silverbacks en-tered the Spring Season finale at Al Lang Stadium with hopes of spoiling the Tampa Bay Rowdies chance at claiming the short-season championship on Saturday night. The Rowdies seized a 3-0 victory over Atlanta, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the league-leading New York Cosmos — who raised the Spring Season trophy after drawing to earn the point they needed for the championship.

After a scoreless opening hour, the home side struck first when forward Corey Hertzog chested a Darwin Espinal cross through traffic and into the Silverbacks’ (1-5-4, 8 points) net. Martin Nunez netted a free kick in the 75th minute and Silver-backs-killer Georgi Hristov converted an 89th minute penalty kick to continue his consecutive streak (7 games) of scoring against the Silverbacks.

The Rowdies (5-4-1, 19 points) doubled their tally 15 minutes after their first goal, taking a free kick from about 30 yards out, just left of center. Nunez’s strike crashed into Atlanta’s wall, striking an outstretched arm. The handball moved the free kick up 10 yards on the same benevolent angle. Nunez froze Atlanta keeper Steward Ceus, as the strike rose over the wall but dove under the crossbar.

With just a minute before the end of regulation, Silverbacks captain Simon Mensing fouled Rowdies winger Robert Hernandez as he cut inside the 18-yard box. Hristov lined up his spot kick and muscled it past the diving Ceus for Tampa Bay’s third goal of the match.

In the 20 minutes before the penalty, Atlanta found itself marked inside center official Sorin Stoica’s book on four occasions, climaxing with forward Jaime Chavez’s second yellow and sending off just seven minutes after entering for Shaka Bangura. His ejection forced the Silverbacks to close out regulationa and five added minutes with a 10-man team. Chavez will now miss the Silverbacks Fall Season opener on July 4.

The Silverbacks created chances, launching 10 shots in total — four on-target and five blocked — including a Bangura blast in the 56th minute that dented both the crossbar and upright. Atlanta held 45 percent possession and took five corner kicks — compared to Tampa Bay’s two — in the match, but couldn’t find the net for the second match in a row.

The Silverbacks must now shift their attention to the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, where they face Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. | YouTube.com) in New Jersey. The NASL Fall Season kicks off as the Silverbacks visit the Rowdies on July 4 in search of immediate revenge. Atlanta returns home to Atlanta Silverbacks Park on July 16 to host Jacksonville Armada FC (tickets) at 7:30 p.m.

The 25-year-old full back joined the Silver-backs before the 2015 Spring Season after time in MLS and USL. Miller was drafted by Sporting Kansas City

in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft and spent two years with the club, scoring in a friendly. In 2014, Miller appeared 23 times for the Oklaho-ma City Energy in USL, scoring once.

Atlanta Silverbacks FC is a men's professional soccer club that competes in the North American Soccer League (NASL). The club was founded in 1998, and competed in the A-League until 2004 when they joined the USL First Division. The Silverbacks reached the USL Championship Game in 2007, but fell to the Seattle Sounders.

After going on hiatus in 2009-2010, the Silverbacks returned to the professional field as members of the NASL in 2011. The club earned its first championship in 2013, capturing the NASL Spring Season Championship. By winning the title, the Silverbacks earned the right to host the league's championship game, NASL Soccer Bowl 2013, in Atlanta. Unfortunately, the Silverbacks came up short in the final, dropping a 1-0 decision to the New York Cosmos.

On joining the NASL, the team was still owned by Boris Jerkunica and John Latham. Brothers Henry and John Hardin joined the ownership group in late 2013. In December 2014, the NASL announced that it would operate the club for the 2015 season while they seek a local ownership group.

The team plays its home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park, which houses a 5000-seat stadium.
