  • HONOREENatalie J. WeinthalExecutive Vice PresidentGrenadier Realty Corp.

Natalie Weinthal has been supervising management operations for Grenadier Realty Corp. for many years. Her passion for affordable decent housing has always been behind her work: My reward has been the happiness and joy of new tenants, who come from substandard housing, when we present them with keys to their new apartments.

At Grenadier, Natalie has specialized in and has had great success in turning distressed properties into financially and physically viable developments. She is justifiably proud of the numerous successful building turnarounds that continue to benefit the residents and community.

As supervisor of management operations for over 50 residential properties, Natalie works with Grenadiers team of property managers, with private owners, non-profit organizations, tenant groups, as well as state, local and federal government agencies. This requires the kind of talents and commitment that personify Natalie. Heres what some of the people shes worked with say about her: Natalie is tenacious and determined in reaching the goals she has set for herself and others, and she does it on schedule. She is a leader whose drive encourages respect and admiration.

Her continuing interest in serving the community is evident in her career prior to her work at Grenadier. She was a public school art teacher and tutored students in math and reading for many years through art therapy. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Hunter College.

Natalie volunteers for Ronald McDonald House; is involved in The Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, a hospital in Ghana built by her surgeon to correct spinal and other deformities; and has encouraged and helped minority women to pursue successful careers in housing.

Natalies commitment to affordable housing has nowhere been expressed more clearly than through her long involvement with Two Bridges Neighborhood Council. She is proud to support their work in building a successful and diverse community of decent, safe and affordable housing.

Two Bridges Neighborhood Council (TBNC) was founded in the working-class neighborhood of Manhattan bordered by the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the East River. At that time tensions were high and gang violence was common, as the area was becoming one of the citys first racially integrated neighborhoods. TBNC was created to resolve racial conflicts and to serve as a channel for communication among settlement houses, churches, and community leaders.

By the early 1970s, the mission of TBNC evolved to include neighborhood preservation and the creation of affordable housing. In partnership with Settlement Housing Fund, TBNC co-sponsored the redevelopment of the Two Bridges Urban Renewal Area. Between 1972 and 1997, when the last building in the urban renewal area was completed, TBNC succeeded in creating nearly 1,500 units of low- and moderate-income housing, much of which will remain permanently affordable. TBNC continues to seek opportunities to develop more affordable housing at a time when it is more essential than ever.

Today, TBNC is working to ensure equitable access and resources for all New Yorkers along the East River Waterfront through the South Street Stakeholders Initiative. Since 2011, TBNC has developed an impressive array of new community programs and activities for local residents, most of which operate from the community room in Two Bridges Tower. Programs include courses and events focusing on health and wellness, arts and culture, and place-based science education.

In 2015, the New York State Health Foundation selected TBNC as one of six grantees of the newly launched Healthy Neighborhoods Fund initiative, providing a powerful opportunity to holistically address the critical need for health and environmental equity in the Two Bridges neighborhood.

We are proud to celebrate 60 years of service to the Lower East Side.

  • The 60 year history of accomplishments by the Two Bridges Neighborhood Council demonstrates the effectiveness of affordable housing and the anti-poverty movement of the sixties. Two Bridges Neighborhood Council gives us hope for the future.

    - Carol Lamberg
