in original boxes and in good condition. We have downsized and are looking to sell them. Do you know of anyone in the secondary market who deals in them? -- Ralph, Coventry, R.I.

A: I made several calls, and it seems that no one I contacted is in the market to buy Byers Carolers. I next monitored eBay, where several dozen are posted for sale. This might be your best bet. In my opinion, the Byers Carolers that I’ve seen are of fairly recent vintage, most from the 1990s. In other words, I don’t think these Christmas caroler figurines are quite old or rare enough to be in much demand with serious collectors.

published by Dodd, Mead & Company in 1935. It is illustrat-ed by H.M. Brock. I am curious about how much it is worth. -- Grimes, Kokomo, Ind.

A: I found a copy of this edition of “A Christmas Carol” at The Bookstall, www.bookstall.com, for $55. Depending on the condition of the one you have, it could be worth a little more or a little less. Keep in mind that what something is priced at and what it eventually sells for are sometimes two different things.

• • •Q: I have inherited a collection of 160 Danish Christmas

Q: Every year I have to deal with brown and dying grass, because the climate we live in gets so hot in the late summer. We also have water restrictions to deal with. How can I keep my lawn healthy? -- Bryan in Norcross, Ga.

No more marshmallows! A pecan-pie-inspired top-ping brings a festive twist to classic sweet potatoes.

Let’s make fire with ice! Impossible, you say? Well, it just depends on how you look at it. Follow my easy process for creating these super “cool” candles that add a warm glow to any evening.

To make several medium-size candles, you’ll need:--1-pound box of paraffin wax (available in the canning section at

most markets)--1 saucepan and a tin can, such as a coffee can --Candle coloring (optional)--Ice cubes crushed into medium-size chunks. Your kids may fill a

gallon plastic bag about three-quarters full with ice. Secure the top. Let them use a hammer to break the ice into small chunks.

--Empty and clean pint- or quart-size cardboard milk cartons with the tops cut off

--A white or colored taper candle for each ice candle, 1 inch shorter than the cut carton. Trim the candle from the bottom, if necessary.

An adult should fill the bottom of the saucepan with a few inches of water and place the tin can in the center. Put a chunk of paraffin inside the can along with extra candle stubs you might have around the house. Add color-ing if you wish. Stir occasionally as the wax melts, keeping a constant eye on it since it is flammable.

For a wick, your school-age child can place a taper candle in the middle of a milk carton and pack the ice around it.

When the wax is melted, an adult should use a potholder to lift the can out of the saucepan and pour the melted wax directly into the milk carton over the ice and around the taper candle. As the wax melts the ice, you’ll hear cracking and popping!

Once the wax is hard, drain off the water a time or two. Peel the carton away from the candle and enjoy the surprise of your work of art! The ice will have formed interesting pockets, like a chunk of Swiss cheese.

To use, set it on a plate and surround it with marbles. When you light the candle, give your preschooler the job of saying “Ta-da!” as you stand around proudly watching the creation flicker on a winter’s night.

Note: An adult should always be present when burning candles.• • •

It’s happened to everyone at some point -- that ugly, duplicate, wrong-sized (or just plain wrong) gift, to which we smile and say, “Thanks. It’s just what I wanted!”

Then, as soon as the coast is clear, we get in our cars and make a beeline for the customer-ser-vice counter. Because being gracious about a gift doesn’t mean we have to live with it.

Of course, if an item is homemade or unique, you’re generally stuck with it, but if not, there are a couple of alternatives.

RegiftingThis option requires care. Who doesn’t have

“stuff” they’d like to eventually downsize, and what better way than to pass it on to another deserving soul? While thrift-store boutiques are a good option, if you decide to regift to a friend or relative, remember: be sure the item is some-thing the new recipient will appreciate; leave it in the original packaging; and (it should go without saying) avoid regifting within the same circle of friends or relatives.

An exception, of course, is gag gifts ... the wackier the better. Family traditions have been born out of these, some of them lasting for years.

ReturningWhether you’re on the giving or receiving end,

if regifting isn’t an option you’ll want to check a store’s return policy before you even get in the car, to see if receipts are a must. Some stores won’t require one, but you’re also more likely to be successful if you return an item as soon as possible after it’s purchased.

In lieu of a receipt, explaining that the item was a gift will sometimes work, but if not, be ready to show verification of the purchase, such as a bank statement. You may also be asked to show ID in an effort to weed out “serial returners.” If an item is defective, your chances of getting your money back just went up exponentially, but then again, sometimes a store credit is as good a return as you’ll get.

And if you’re asked about the status of the gift? It’s better to err on the side of kindness rather than a lie that could come back to haunt you. A simple, “Would you believe so and so al-ready gave me one? I knew you wouldn’t mind if I exchanged it for a (fill in the blank)” can ease a sticky situation.

Happy gifting. And many happy returns!© 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Puzzle Answers

Just before Christmas, two brothers were spending the night at their Grandma's house. At bed time, they knelt down to say their prayers.

As they closed their eyes, one boy said in a loud voice, "Dear Lord, please ask Santa Claus to bring me a Wii, a telescope and a new bike."

His older brother said, "Why are you shout-ing? God isn't deaf."

"I know," said his brother, "but Grandma is."

Leaky Window Sash Is a Simple FixQ: One of the windows in our bedroom is leaking air un-

derneath the bottom sash. On cold days I can feel air flowing between the sash and the windowsill, and condensation often forms along the bottom of the windowpane. In the summer, this is the window that we put our air-conditioning unit in. I checked underneath the sash to see if there is any damage, but did not see any. How can I stop the leak? -- Drafty in Durham, N.H.

A: The window frame may not be damaged, but some slight warping may have occurred over time as the window braced the air-conditioning unit. If there is no visible damage, you should be able to quickly block the leak using weather stripping.

As far as the condensation: If the condensation is on the outside or inside of the window -- and not forming between

double panes -- it probably is a normal occurrence during winter. (If it forms between double panes, it may be time to replace that pane or bottom sash.) However, its location can help you pinpoint where a gap exists between the sash and the sill.

In this case, the condensation is forming along the bottom of the window. On really cold days it may even drip down and puddle along the sill. It signals that warm and cold air are meeting much more frequently along that sash than other parts of the window.

As I mentioned, weather stripping should resolve this prob-lem quickly. Your main concern is what type of weather stripping to use. This Old House has a nice, quick guide to the different types of weather stripping here: www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20441335,00.html.

Because you need a fix in a hurry, consider either felt strip-ping or foam tape. You probably will need to replace the felt stripping each year, but it’s fairly inexpensive, and easy to install with finishing nails or a staple gun. Foam tape comes in several widths and can be rapidly installed by peeling off the backing and sticking into place along the bottom of the sash.

A pricier, but longer-lasting option is a vinyl-tube type of

weather stripping. It’s durable and can be purchased in different widths, and typically has the option of either a peel-and-stick backing or screw-in fasteners.

Before installing weather stripping, clean the contact surfaces of the window thoroughly with soap and water and make sure they are completely dry. Measure the width of the bottom sash and cut the stripping with an extra inch on each side. When you install the stripping, use a utility knife to trim away excess at each edge.

HOME TIPIf the windows in your home or a room

fog up regularly in winter, try increasing air circulation to reduce humidity: open

curtains and crack windows for a few minutes daily, or run a dehumidifier.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m planning to adopt a cat soon. This is my first pet, and I’m looking forward to caring for it. The local shelter gave me a few instructions to follow, pre-adoption, including making an appointment for a veterinary checkup. Is there anything I should know about my cat’s first vet visit? -- Kara L., Buffalo, N.Y.

DEAR KARA: Congratulations on deciding to accept a cat into your life! It will be a rewarding experience. I’m also glad that you’re doing your homework ahead of time to give your cat the best start on a new life.

Here are a few tips that will help with your first veterinary visit:• Research local clinics ahead of time. Is there one that specializes in

cats? • Purchase a cat carrier that best fits your cat (in terms of size, not decor).

Pet’s First Visit to the Veterinarian

This will make transporting the cat from the shelter and to and from the vet much easier and safer.

• Keep all paperwork from the shelter in a folder and bring it with you.

• You should be able to be present during the exam. It’s a great time to ask questions about caring for your cat. Bring a pencil and pad to take notes.

• Listen to the vet as he or she gives you information about your cat’s general health. Vets or their assistants often talk to you throughout the process, telling you what they’re checking for and the result.

• Follow the vet’s instructions. If a follow-up visit or more tests are needed, make sure you do it. Write down special instructions like how much and what type of food to feed your cat, or instructions on giving medication. And don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand something.

• It was novelist Mary Ann Evans -- better known by her pen name, George Eliot -- who made the fol-

lowing sage observation: “Blessed is the man who, hav-ing nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy evidence of the fact.”

• In the five-year span between 1946 and 1951, televi-sion ownership in the United States jumped from 10,000 to 12 million.

• You probably don’t know the name Clara Peller, but if you were watching TV in the 1980s, you would almost certainly recognize her as the “Where’s the beef?” lady from fast-food chain Wendy’s incredibly successful ad campaign. You might be surprised to learn that Peller wasn’t an actress; she was a manicurist. A commercial producer named Joe Sedelmaier was shooting a different ad when he realized they needed a manicurist on site,

so an assistant ran to a local beauty shop and returned with Peller. As soon as she greeted Sedelmaier with a gruff “How ya doin’?”, the producer realized that she had potential. He convinced Wendy’s to create an entire campaign around the octogenarian. The gamble paid off; the restaurant’s sales jumped by 15 percent almost as soon as the ads began to run.

• TV’s Gilligan’s island was created in the middle of an artificial lake at CBS Studios in Hollywood. The cost of construction was $75,000.

• The next time you’re at a hockey game, be sure to watch out for stray pucks; they travel through the air at speeds of up to 100 mph.

• There is a species of ant found in Australia and Tas-mania that, in some cases, can kill a human with a single sting.
