Collecting continued from page 1had a ruffled edge. -- Susan, Elizabeth, New Jersey

A: Chill out. I found your piece in “Kovels’ Antiques & Col-lectibles Price List” by Terry and the late Ralph Kovel. According to the Kovels, your Fenton basket is worth about $4. Yes, that is not a misprint: $4.

• • •Q: At a recent yard sale, I purchased several older perfume bot-

tles. I don’t collect perfume bottles, but was attracted their unique designs. Since at least three are Art Deco, I believe my bottles probably are from the 1930s and ‘40s. How can I find out more about them? -- EmmaLou, Flagstaff, Arizona

A: One of the better organizations that you might find helpful is The International Perfume Bottle Association, www.perfumebot-tles.org. I also like “The Wonderful World of Collecting Perfume Bottles: Identification & Value Guide” by Jane Flanagan (Collector Books). Even though this reference was first published in 2006, it remains my go-to book for answers in this field of collecting. Col-lector Books’ contact is P.O. Box 3009, Paducah, KY 42002.

A: You paid just about what it is worth. I found your cup refer-enced in “1904 St. Louis World’s Fair: Mementos and Memora-bilia” by the late Robert L. Hendershott, who listed the tumbler’s value in the $50 to $100 range.

The holiday season tastes like peppermint, and most of us can’t get enough. Peppermint mocha brightens the morning, peppermint ice cream makes us dreamy at night, and cute red-and-white-striped candy canes evoke festive childhood memories during the hours in between.

While on the topic of peppermint whatevers, I can’t leave out yummy -- and trendy -- peppermint bark. Who can resist the sweet layers of dark and white chocolate topped with crunchy peppermint bits?

This year, make your own batch or two of peppermint

bark with this easy, economical version using ingredients from the baking section and candy aisle of the grocery store. Older kids can melt candy coating (almond bark) in the microwave, while preschoolers pound candy canes into

Peppermint Bark Is Trendy Holiday Candy

small bits with a toy hammer to sprinkle on top. Working together with you, the entire prep takes less than half an hour. The kids can scoot off to another activity while the bark cools and hardens.

EASY HOLIDAY PEPPERMINT BARK

1 pound good-quality chocolate confectionary coating, broken into pieces. (Look for it in the grocery baking section, sometimes labeled “almond bark” or “candy coating”)1 1/2 teaspoons pure peppermint extract12 ounces good-quality white vanilla-flavored confectionery coating, broken into pieces1/2 cup crushed candy canes

1. Line a baking sheet with foil sprayed with nonstick cook-ing spray.

2. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate coating, uncov-ered, for 90 seconds on high power, and stir. Continue to mi-crowave and stir at 30-second intervals until almost melted. (Be

sure to use a dry bowl and utensils.) Add 1 teaspoon peppermint extract, and stir until smooth.

3. Pour onto the foil-lined baking sheet. Spread evenly into a thin layer, approximately 10 by 14 inches.

4. In another microwave-safe bowl, heat white coating as in step 2. Add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract (optional), and stir until smooth. Spoon evenly over chocolate layer, which should be setting up, but not hard, as you want the white layer to bond with the base layer.

5. Immediately sprinkle peppermint pieces over all and lightly press them into the white layer with a spatula or a spoon. Don’t wait on this step, or the top layer will harden and the candies won’t stick.

5. Let stand for an hour or refrigerate until hardened. Break into pieces. Makes about 1 3/4 pounds.

Tinsel, lights, 3-D ornaments and even gift-wrapped packages aren’t just for the Christmas tree anymore. Throw in a few clashing patterns, some cheesy animals and just the right amount of sparkle, attach all to a cozy cardigan, and voila! You’ve got a custom creation virtu-ally guaranteed to make you a laughingstock.

And the proud owners of ugly Christmas sweaters wouldn’t have it any other way ... because as one author-ity on the subject noted, “It’s the most fun you can have with your knitwear on.”

But what’s behind this annual fashion madness? No one has so far seen fit to ‘fess up, but what

started as a fad and ended up a full-blown industry appears to have originated in that decade of excess, the ‘80s. Like other fashion choices we now view with regret, those early “jingle bell sweaters” were no doubt considered charming. Their popularity waned in the ‘90s, but the first (or so the city of Vancou-ver, Canada, claims) “ugly” party, in 2001, helped launch them back into the mainstream, where they’ve remained ever since. And why not, in a season that’s often filled with as much stress as cheer, many of us could use a good laugh?

Even better is getting ugly for a cause. The brains be-hind that Vancouver celebration, Jordan Birch and Paul Boyd, admit they never dreamed that “a joke between

friends ... would evolve into a grassroots fundraising move-ment that has inspired non-stop giving around the globe.”

Their yearly bash now attracts over 1,000 celebrants, with ticket sales generating thousands of dollars for charities and non-profits.

Whether you’re out to raise funds or merely have fun, it’s time to get your holi-day ugly on! Serve Ugly Sweater cookies at your next party. Spring for that dreadful pullover. There’s no shortage of suppliers, from department stores to Amazon.com. If you’re the do-it-yourself type, you can easily find instructions online. And if you ever have second thoughts about your sartorial choices, chances are good you’ll get a return on your investment over on

eBay, where collectors have been known to spend hundreds of dollars on the jersey of their dreams.

Merry Christmas! May your days be merry and bright ... and may all your Christmas sweaters be ugly.

This easy-to-handle dough is perfect for Christmas cutouts.

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder1/4 teaspoon salt3/4 cup butter or margarine (1 1/2 sticks), softened1 cup sugar1 large egg1 tablespoon milk2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon peel or vanilla extract

1. In medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter and 3/4 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, milk and lemon peel until well-combined. Reduce speed to low; beat in flour mixture just until blended. Shape dough into disk; wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours or up to overnight.

2. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour two large cookie sheets. On lightly floured surface, with floured rolling pin, roll half of dough 1/8 inch thick; keep remaining dough refrigerated. With floured 3-inch assorted cookie cutters, cut dough into as many cookies as possible; reserve trimmings for rerolling. Place cookies, 1 inch apart, on prepared cookie sheets. If desired, with drinking straw or skewer, make 1/4-inch hole in top of each cookie for hanging. Sprinkle some of remaining 1/4 cup sugar over cookies.

3. Bake until golden, about 10 minutes, rotating cookie sheets between upper and lower oven racks halfway through baking. With wide spatula, transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough and trim-mings. Makes about 42 cookies.

Holiday Sugar CookiesChristmas Around the WorldBy Sabrina Napolitano

In America, Christmas means Santa Claus, brightly decorated Christmas trees and gingerbread cookies. But other coun-tries celebrate Christmas in their own spe-cial way! Take a look at some of the unique Christmas traditions below and share them with your family. It’s a fun way to learn about a new culture, and might even provide some ideas to spice up your own Christmas.

The United Kingdom The British celebrate much the way

we do in America, but with an added twist. During Christmas dinner, they’ll tear apart Christmas “crackers” -- cardboard tubes wrapped in decorative paper made to re-semble a large sweet. Inside is a paper hat, small toy and a riddle or trivia. The paper hats are normally worn at Christmas din-ner, which usually consists of roast beef or goose. For dessert, the British will have a nice Christmas pudding, traditionally made with dried fruits held together by egg or suet.

PolandChristmas Eve in Poland is very im-

portant. As the country is largely Catholic, most Poles will fast during the day and eat a special dinner after the first star is seen in the sky. This meal is traditionally meat-free. Before dinner, the family will break bread together using an Oplatek -- a wafer em-bossed with religious imagery. The eldest member of the family will break a piece of the wafer first while a prayer is said, pass-ing it around until each member has one.

Italy The Italians love to use nativity crib scenes

to tell the Christmas story. In fact, it’s not un-common for nativity crib scenes to be very grandiose, sometimes covered in candles and decorative paper. The largest nativity crib scene is in the Italian city of Naples, with more than 600 objects on it! Typically, Italian families eat a light fish dinner on Christmas Eve before going to Midnight Mass. One of the real treats of an Italian Christmas are the sweets such as struffoli, balls of fried dough drizzled in honey.

AustraliaDown Under, it’s actually summertime

during Christmas! Even though it’s hot, that doesn’t stop the Australians from celebrating. Many decorate their houses with Christmas bush, a native tree with white flowers that turn red in the summer. Australians even have their own Christmas carols, such as “Six White Boomers,” which tells the story of Santa using kangaroos to delivery presents in Australia’s summer weather.

Ghana Ghana is a coastal country in Af-

rica where Christmas is celebrated starting Dec. 20. During Christmas Eve services, there usually is a lively celebration with drums and dancing. For their Christmas meal, Ghana-ians tend to eat okra soup, porridge and a yam paste called “fufu,” which is usually dipped in the soup.

Argentina It’s also warm in Argentina during

Christmas, so the meal on Christ-

mas Eve may be eaten in the garden or even be a barbecue. A popular dessert is pan dulce, literally, “sweet bread.” In addition, there are usually fireworks. Some Argentinians also will light “globos” -- small hot air balloons made of paper with light inside. They release them into the night sky, and globos can be seen floating all over Argentina on Christmas Eve!

Philippines If you visit the Philippines during Christ-

mas, you may see “parol,” a bamboo pole with a lighted star on it, usually decorated with colored Japanese paper or cellophane. It’s the most popular Christmas decoration in the Philippines. On Christmas Eve, there is a large midnight feast with family, friends and even neighbors known as Noche Buena. Some of the dishes found laid out on the table might be lechon (roasted pig), bibingka and puto bumbog (steamed rice cakes), as well as white rice. Of all the Asian countries, the Philippines has the largest concentration of Christians and Catho-lics, so Christmas is widely celebrated.

It’s no secret that public speaking is said to be the No. 1 fear of the general population. Even Mark Twain, who had a quip for almost every occasion, admitted to being “in awful terror” when it was his turn to toast General Ulysses S. Grant at a banquet of

Raise Your Glass: How to Make a Holiday Toast

By Lucie M. Winborne

Civil War veterans in 1879. Fortunately for Mr. Twain, his wit stood him in good stead, for

the record states that not only did his speech bring 600 soldiers to their feet, but “shook [Grant] up like dynamite.” In a good way, that is: “He sat there 15 minutes and laughed and cried like the mortalest of mortals.”

Of course, most of us aren’t Mark Twains, not to mention the fact that he didn’t live in an age when pretty much everyone you meet is armed with a cellphone camera and easy access to You-Tube. But with the aid of a few simple steps, anyone can make a holiday toast like a pro.

1. Remember that it’s not about you. Someday you, too, may take a turn in the spotlight, but that time isn’t now. Keep the focus on the person being honored.

2. Short and sweet wins the day. In today’s world of limited attention spans, it’s best to confine your remarks to no more than three minutes. Go over five and you may risk “getting the hook,” as they said in the good old days of vaudeville.

3. It’s a toast -- not a roast! Personal anecdotes are not only fine but expected, but aim for the meaningful and leave the barbs to standup comics. Standards of humor aren’t universal, and what tickles your funny bone may leave someone else’s (including the honoree’s) stone cold. Worse, a badly flopped toast is what most people are likely to recall about the occasion years later.

4. Write it down -- then practice. For most of us, an emotional, if joyous, occasion like that calling for a toast requires prepara-tion. Even actors rehearse award acceptance speeches ahead of time. And while memorization is great, it never hurts to keep some backup notes in your pocket.

5. Wrap things up with a smile, thanks, and encouragement or blessing as you raise your glass. Then breathe a sigh of relief as you take your seat. It’s over, and you did great ... now it’s time to celebrate.

• Honey has antibacterial properties? Yep! Try rubbing a bit of it over a small cut for faster, more natural healing.

• “To separate yolks from egg whites, simply crack eggs into a shallow bowl and ‘suck’ the yolk out using an empty plastic water bottle. Squeeze the bottle slightly, then position the mouth of the bottle at the yolk and let go. It will magically slide up into the bottle, leaving the whites behind!” -- T.T. in New York

• Make your own gift wrap from everyday items like news-paper and children’s drawings, which can be glued together along the edges. For a really unique wrapping, try inexpen-sive fabric.

• “This time-tested tip will keep your houseplants in the green while you’re away from home: Set plants in the bath-tub in an inch or less of water. If your flowerpot does not have drain holes, get a short length of cotton rope and feed it from the topsoil to the tub. This will keep plants alive and thriving for a week or more.” -- D.R. in Florida

• Unmatched socks are handy-dandy cleaners and have so many uses. Keep one by the dryer to get all the lint off the trap. Shake it out or pop it into the wash when needed.
