ABOUTTBG LEARNING

Our mission is to be the provider of choice for person-centred, outcome-focused programmes that help people who are disadvantaged to get new skills, increase their capacity to live life and work independently in a way that matches their choices, aspirationsand needs. We summarise this as Improving Lives Through Learning.

We are part of Rehab Group, which is a charity that works across the UK, Ireland, Poland and the Netherlands providing training, employment, health and social care and commercial services to over 50,000 people each year.

TBG Learning is one of the UK’s leading third-sector-owned

youth and adult learning organisations, as well as a growing

provider of services focused on employment preparation.

TBG Learning works to help people develop themselves, so that they can become self-sustaining in life. We operate at different points on the continuum of an individual’s life where difficulties emerge and support is needed. For some, it’s early intervention to provide training when a young person drops out of the traditional school system, for others, it’s developing their skills, to prepare them for a job or further education. We give people access to the workplace through work placements and jobs, and provide them with support while in employment to ensure they stay employed.

TBG Learning’s services work towards helping people to live life and work independently in a way that matches their choices, aspirations and needs.

TBG Learning provides services for people from the age of 14 years old, and throughout adulthood. We offer a variety of learning opportunities, ranging from basic literacy, numeracy and social development skills, to specific vocational areas that will improve a person’s employment prospects, either in or out of work.

Every year over 35,000 people participate on a TBG Learning programme, where they benefit from support that helps them on their journey towards getting and keeping a job.

Our Apprenticeship training is a welcome addition to employers across the country and each year thousands of people achieve a qualification while in work. This increases their skill, makes them more valuable to their employer and helps them continue successfully in employment.

On behalf of TBG Learning I welcome you to this brochure. I hope you find a service that suits your needs, whatever type of partner, employer or funder you are.

Throughout our history, TBG Learning has been providing employability and training opportunities to people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK and Ireland.

Many of the services we provide are focussed on the needs of socially disadvantaged groups in the communities we serve; for example, long-term unemployed people with multiple barriers to employment.

Our employability services are a key area of our business – we’re very proud to be able to help around 35,000 people each year in the UK gain a qualification or progress into employment or further education. To achieve this we provide a whole package of support for unemployed people, which is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of each person that comes through our doors.

For more than 25 years TBG Learning has been helping

people across the UK and Ireland transform their lives

through learning, through the delivery of a range of

training, support and employability services designed to

help people to up-skill, get and keep a job, and play an

active role in their communities.

Page 12: TBG Learning

In our learning centres nationwide we deliver a number of learning programmes for young people aged 14–19, a range of adult learning courses and employability programmes. We also work with hundreds of employers nationally, providing training, Apprenticeship programmes and recruitment services.

All our training services lead to recognised qualifications, whether these are basic skills courses, National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Apprenticeships or industry specific accreditations. At TBG Learning we believe in ‘improving lives through learning’, which for us means supporting people to overcome any personal problems or barriers preventing them from working or engaging with society, helping people to recognise their skills and abilities, build on them and apply them to the labour market, and focussing on achieving long-term employment outcomes that enable people to live independent lives.

We believe in lifelong learning and work with people of all ages, providing services specific to their needs at whatever point they are in their career.

I’m really thankful for the help everyone at TBG Learning has given me, they listened to me and my ideas instead of writing me off due to my dyslexia.

Ronald Gomersall

Ronald has severe dyslexia and is unable to read and write; he’d become frustrated at the lack of opportunities available to him, but has now started his own jewellery market stall with the support of TBG Learning.

Ronald said the advice and support offered by the TBG Learning team played an integral part in getting his business off the ground, along with boosting his confidence.

“Before, I’ll be honest, I was fed up with relying on income support and had an idea to start up my own business but didn’t know how to go about it.

“The team at TBG Learning were very sympathetic of my circumstances and gave me access to a self-employment advisor. After a few weeks of this additional specialist support, I was up and running with the market stall.”

Ronald, who had been out of work due to health reasons, is now planning to diversify the range of products he’s selling and is also looking to trade at further markets in the area.

“It was quite tough going to start with but it is picking up and I’m now looking at maybe trying to sell a few different products for which I’ve spotted a gap in the market,” he added.

“I’m really thankful for the help everyone at TBG Learning has given me; they listened to me and my ideas instead of writing me off due to my dyslexia, and helped give me back my confidence. It’s really reassuring that I can call them or pop in anytime if I ever need any help or support.”

Ronald Gomersall is rising to the

challenge of running his own business

after overcoming a frustrating 15-year

period out of work.

TBG Learning is part of the Rehab Group, an independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides training, employment, health and social care, and commercial services to people in Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, the Netherlands and Poland. Rehab is a charity registered in the UK with the Charity Commission.

As a leading non-governmental organisation, Rehab Group works towards a world where every person has the opportunity to achieve their potential, working in local communities to provide high-quality services and opportunities for people who need them.

Every year, more than 50,000 people and their families benefit from the supports provided by Rehab Group in over 250 locations.

Rehab works to influence leaders and policymakers to deliver positive change in the lives of the people who access our services, and has consultative status as a non-governmental organisation at the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

The following organisations are Rehab Group companies:

Improving Lives Through Learning

Gwella Bywydau Trwy Ddysgu

Page 16: TBG Learning

Rehab was established in Ireland in 1949 to support people who had survived the TB epidemic to regain their independence after their medical treatment was completed. In the early years, Rehab focused on providing training services to support people to enter or to re-enter the workforce.

Rehab has since expanded its focus to include all people with disabilities and others who are marginalised. Hundreds of thousands of people and their families have benefitted from the services provided by the organisation over the years.

From humble beginnings in a one-room centre in Dublin providing a service to ten people, followed by expansion to two additional centres in Cork and Limerick in 1952, Rehab now provides services in over 250 locations across Ireland, the United Kingdom and mainland Europe.

The organisation has diversified considerably, developing training, education, health and social care services as well as sustainable, commercial businesses where people with disabilities and people without disabilities work side by side. The people who access our services include people who are long-term unemployed, people with autism, people with an acquired brain injury, people with a physical, sensory or learning disability, older people, young people seeking training, and others who are marginalised.

Throughout its history, Rehab has worked hard to ensure its economic sustainability so that it can continue to provide high-quality services for the people it serves. It operates a number of lottery and bingo activities – traditional, radio and online – which support the development of its services.

In the UK, Rehab operates a range of training, education, health and social care and employment services, from Eastbourne to Inverness. TBG Learning, acquired by the Rehab Group in 1996, provides training and employment services to more than 35,000 people each year. Momentum operates health and social care, training and employment services in Scotland and England.

The Rehab story…

Haven, which operates in the logistics and resource recovery markets, provides employment to people with disabilities. Momentum Skills provides vocational andpre-vocational training to people with disabilities, mental health issues and addiction issues, among others, as well as specific services for people with an acquired brain injury. Momentum Care provides both home support and home help services in people’s own homes, as well as a day resource centre for older people in Coventry.

The Chaseley Trust supports people with severe physical disabilties through residential, respite and day care, along with multidisciplinary therapy assessments, treatments and rehabilitation. It operates a residential home and bungalows in Eastbourne.

In Ireland, services are provided by the training and employment division, National Learning Network, the health and social care division, RehabCare and the enterprises division, Rehab Enterprises.

Over the last 60 years, a huge amount has been achieved by Rehab for people with disabilities and others who are marginalised. Rehab plans to build on this and to play a key part in shaping a better future for people with disabilities and others who are marginalised for many years to come.

I never thought I’d get any qualifications. I never managed to complete school or stay at college long enough, but when I came to TBG it felt different. I stuck at it and found that I actually started to enjoy it.

I’ve passed all my exams and I’m very proud, even my family was surprised at how well I’ve done. After sending off an application for a job, I couldn’t believe it the next day when I got a phone call saying that I’d been successful.

Supporting people to overcome obstacles and achieve sustainable employment lies at the heart of everything TBG Learning does. TBG Learning works with employers and industry in private and third sector partnerships to provide opportunities for our learners and disadvantaged communities.

An example of this is our work with Interserve plc. Interserve is a leading support services and construction company, operating in the public and private sectors in the UK and internationally. Interserve is based in the UK; it has revenue of almost £2billion and a workforce of approximately 50,000 people worldwide.

At the start of 2011 we entered into a joint venture with Interserve to deliver enhanced services to unemployed people, combining our service delivery expertise and track record with Interserve’s capacity to bring a wide variety of sustainable job opportunities, investment resources as well as extensive supply-chain management expertise to the partnership. This joint venture is calledRehab JobFit.

TBG Learning is integral to Rehab JobFit as it manages the frontline services for the organisation, with contract delivery undertaken both directly and through partners and specialist niche providers. Rehab JobFit sits on the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Employment Related Support Services framework, through which it delivers flagship DWP contracts, such as The Work Programme and Mandatory Work Activity programme across Wales and the South West of England.

TBG Learning’s extensive experience in supporting a wide range of customers to realise their full potential enables the achievement of a real step change in people’s lives to deliver a better future. Rehab JobFit works with a network of 18 subcontractors across Wales and South West England; with a further 30 specialist support providers delivering intensive support to the hardest to help.

TBG Learning is proud to be a key part of the Rehab JobFit partnership; which is one of only two third sector Work Programme Prime contractors, and continues to develop wider relationships with Interserve and new employer partners to maximise all available opportunities for, and on behalf of, our learners and our communities.

Coming to TBG Learning has allowed me to improve myself both personally and academically. This course has also made me realise what I want to do for a career and focus on key areas which could help me to obtain this. I actually now feel motivated.

TBG Learning has learning centres nationwide that deliver a number of Foundation Learning programmes for young people aged 14–19, which support individuals to progress on to college, an Apprenticeship or into work.

We deliver a range of adult learning courses, which help people to develop their skills and understanding and support them to find a job. We work with hundreds of people each year who are already in employment but want to up-skill or re-skill to progress in their career.

We know that raising skill levels through formal training brings social as well as economic benefits. We help people to recognise their skills and abilities, build on them and apply them to the labour market. We believe in lifelong learning and work with people of all ages; from 14 upwards.

I’ve learnt a great deal since studying with TBG Learning. Throughout the course I’ve developed my social, communication and team-building skills.

My CV is fantastic now and I know I can do a good covering letter on my own. My confidence has grown for interviews.

I feel my experience has made me a better person and helped me to gain the qualifications I need to move on to either a part-time Apprenticeship whilst I attend college, or get a job.

Our trained and experienced staff create a sense of community and warmth in our centres, providing a relaxed, secure environment for people to flourish, gain confidence and learn vital skills.

We were delighted when this was recognised in our 2010 Ofsted inspection, where we received an ‘outstanding’ grade for equality and diversity and ‘good’ for overall effectiveness.

Ofsted inspectors specifically highlighted within the report that “Learners are motivated, enthusiastic and enjoy their learning in very safe, informal learning environments, which is recognition of the exceptional work of tutors and learning centre staff to make learning engaging and fun for all”.

I was kicked out of school because of my attitude but here it was a much calmer environment. It was just much quieter and helped me to work.

Breeze is a programme that offers

young people support and guidance to

get back on course with learning.

Breeze has been running for just under a year and to date, 160 learners, aged 14–16, have passed through the programme; with more than 90 per cent of this number progressing back into school to continue learning or on to further education.

Alexia Tsalkitzoglou, Progressions Mentor, works with customers at TBG Learning’s Birmingham centre.

“Young people come to us having been referred by their school or another agency, the traditional education system is just not working for them, which isn’t the fault of the schools– it just doesn’t suit every young person.”

Teenagers Kieran and Beth have got back on track with the help of Breeze. Kieran admits to having an ‘attitude’ at school but said the Breeze programme has helped build hisself-esteem.

“I am going onto a new course and TBG Learning has given me the confidence to be able to do that and do my work. Hopefully it will mean I can get my grades at GCSE.”

For Beth, the experience has not only helped her in education, it has helped her socially too. When she joined the Breeze programme, she barely had the confidence to attend school, but just 12 weeks later she was planning a sailing trip round Europe, through the Prince’s Trust, with a group of young people she had never met.

“Everybody says they can’t believe the change in me, it’s all been about building up my confidence and it has really helped me. We’ve worked in teams and as individuals and it’s really brought my confidence out. I hope this all leads to a bright future for me. I’d like to go on to be a nursery nurse and then eventually a midwife.”

EMPLOYABILITYSERVICES

Being back in work will make a financial difference to my girlfriend and me and our baby, which is due in a few weeks. The huge difference is mentally having something to get up for in the morning, I’ve made some great friends and the job’s really interesting. It’s a brilliant scheme for people who really want to get back into work as the support is there for people.

At TBG Learning we work with unemployed people of all ages, from many different backgrounds who have many different reasons for being unemployed.

Whether they’re looking to find their first job, have been made redundant from an industry they’ve worked in for many years, or have been out-of-work due to illness, disability or social circumstance, we have experienced advisors that will provide a tailored approach to employment which suits their needs.

TBG Learning doesn’t provide a course for getting a job, as everybody who comes through our doors is different. What we do provide is a tailored service that suits each person. This could include getting some help with writing a CV, it could be completing one of our training courses to re-skill or up-skill, it could be undertaking a work placement with a local employer so they can build up their confidence and gain some on-the-job experience to put on their CV.

Our approach is that everyone who is unemployed wants to work and has the capacity to work – but not everybody knows it. If someone has been out of work for a long time, whatever their age, they may not be used to the culture or practice of work. Sometimes the easiest thing in life is not to change what they’re used to. When people are challenged and encouraged to look at things differently through training or help to get back into work, our experience is that they respond well. We see it in all our programmes – being shown the advantages of changing direction through opportunity does greatly encourage people.

Employability services

Page 34: TBG Learning

We work with a range of partner organisations at local, regional and national level delivering employability programmes, a wide range of welfare-to-work and skills programmes and high-quality, outcome-based training programmes which are tailored to address local economic conditions and identified skills needs.

TBG Learning’s free recruitment service

The backing of employers local to our centres is key to the success of our employability programmes. We work hard at building relationships with local and national employers who facilitate crucial work placement and job opportunities for our programme participants.

In difficult economic times it becomes even more important to employers to make cost savings. There are many funding streams and resources available to support businesses in recruiting and training staff, but these are not always well known. Our free recruitment service supports employers to improve the skills and the output of their workforce in the most economic way; helping businesses to access funding for training, and our extensive database of candidates for recruitment.

Much of TBG Learning’s success in finding people employment is due to the local knowledge of our staff and the connections they have with businesses and community organisations.

The training TBG Learning offers ties in very well with our own pre-employment programme and they support their customers extremely well.

We’re keen to work with the local community and the local workforce, to ensure the hotel is a valuable asset to the area. So far we’ve employed three new staff through TBG Learning and they’ve been fantastic additions to our team.

After three years of struggling to make it through to interview stages,I had three lined up in as many weeks!

Victoria Souter

After years of struggling to make it through to interview stages, Victoria had three lined up in as many weeks. She joined Swindon Cars as an Administration Assistant and has quickly built up a good rapport with her new colleagues and the company’s suppliers.

“When I started with TBG Learning on the Work Programme I was concerned that it would be a wasteof my time and also theirs, but as it happened this was so far from the truth.”

“TBG Learning was really sympathetic to my position and from meeting with the consultants it soon became clear that, although I had many transferable skills my CV had the wrong balance, and was a large part of the reason I wasn’t having success.”

“I enrolled on a CV writing course run by TBG Learning to address this, and subsequently I got three interviews in the following three weeks!”

Victoria has settled quickly at Swindon Cars and values the role TBG Learning played inkick-starting her career again.

“What I like about the service they offer is that the support is tailored to each individual person, so you’re not made to feel like just another person looking for a job. I would definitely recommend using TBG Learning if you’re in a similar position to what I was and need a bit of expert guidance.” James Manners, TBG Learning Swindon Business Manager, is delighted to have helped Victoria back into work. “We focus on what people can do rather than what they can’t, and it was clear that while Victoria wasa very bubbly person and has strong skills she just lacked a bit of confidence.”

After three years out of work Victoria

Souter landed a job at a local garage

having taken advantage of expert

advice and support from TBG Learning.

TRAININGSERVICES FOREMPLOYERS

TBG Learning provides us with a one-stop shop for training and recruitment. We are constantly training our staff on a wide range of skills, from handling cleaning materials through to gaining the Construction Skills Certification Scheme card and the Security Industry Association qualifications.

The fact that TBG Learning has a track record in all these fields but is also a third-sector company which focuses on helping people overcome barriers and gain or regain employment, was a major factor in our decision to engage with them.

Investing in employees’ skills and development can improve productivity and competitive advantage. It also boosts staff confidence, competence, motivation and raises employee retention rates.

At TBG Learning we know that recruiting the right member of staff for the company, and ensuring that they have the relevant skills and knowledge to do the job, is of paramount importance to employers. We provide a wide variety of training for people in employment delivered across a range of occupational sectors.

We help employers to assess the skills that their staff require to run their business more effectively and provide access to a range of skills programmes, including National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and Apprenticeship programmes.

Apprenticeships for business

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers. They enable people to earn while they learn; as employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices also receive training from TBG Learning to work towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Training services for employers

Helping employers to get the best out of

their workforce.

Page 42: TBG Learning

Apprenticeships can be used to recruit new employees and also enable existing employees to gain new skills and qualifications. As Apprenticeships are either fully funded or largely subsidised they are a great way to train staff. If a business employs an apprentice aged 16–18 the government will fund 100 per cent of the Apprenticeship training cost; if the employee is 19 or over then up to 50 per cent of the cost is available to train the individual.

TBG Learning has worked with hundreds of employers over the years, delivering training that’s tailored to the needs of businesses. There is a direct relationship between training staff and improving productivity – and TBG Learning exists to help that happen.

Apprentice Assistance Programme

Our Apprentice Assistance Programme, run in association with the Positive People Company (PPC), offers support and guidance to all TBG Learning apprentices. It’s been designed to help apprentices stay in work by providing support, information and guidance to help them cope with life’s challenges and major events, which may be in the workplace or in their personal life.

We’re all faced with major life events at some point; these can appear all the more daunting for someone who is having to combine one or more of these events with taking their first steps into work or training. All too often when this is the case, we see people falling out of employment and this is why we provide this service; to support individuals to remain in work, on along-term basis.

This assistance programme is beneficial to employers as well as employees, as it’s all about work sustainability – employees receive support and advice on important issues, which should in turn result in employers retaining their workforce. Support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week via a free telephone helpline and online services.

Being able to use what I’velearnt with TBG in my everyday job,and indeed my day-to-day life, hasmade me feel so confident.

I’ve learnt how to be moreprofessional in my day-to-daydealings; in terms of suppliers andcustomers, the Apprenticeship hasalso given me the confidence to goon and achieve so much more inmy job.

I’ve become the Staff CouncilRepresentative for a large section ofmy company, events co-ordinator for staff events, and I’m now heavily involved with charitable activities.

The programme provides an ideal platform for team members to enhance their knowledge and provides an opportunity to prepare for promotional opportunities within the organisation.

Julie Nicholas,Temporary Staffing Delivery Manager

Gail Roadknight, Julie Harrison and Sarah Salter are all looking forward to working towards a Customer Services Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.

Julie has worked for the NHS since 1998 and is excited to be undertaking a new challenge.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to get involved in a learning opportunity like this for a long time, I did a B-Tech at college when I was 18, but haven’t done anything like this since, so when I found out about this opportunity I thought let’s go for it.”

Gail, who is 23, has already completed the Level 2 qualification and was also eager to take the step up to the next level.

“The programme compliments what we do in our day-to-day roles and is a really good opportunity to improve our skills and our development within the organisation.”

The trusts’ temporary Staffing Delivery Manager, Julie Nicholas, said further members of the NHS Trust team are also likely to enrol.

“The programme provides an ideal platform for team members to enhance their knowledge and provides an opportunity to prepare for promotional opportunities within the organisation.”

“TBG Learning’s advisors have been really friendly and approachable whilst preparing the team for the programme, and we’re hoping this will encourage others to follow in the footsteps of those who have signed up when they see the benefits it can bring.”

TBG Learning has come a long way in a short space of time and is doing tremendous work across the town. It’s refreshing to see the hard work being put in by staff to address unemployment in the area.
