Thisisas important, inthisage of genre schizophrenia, as any other measureof culturalvalue, surelymarking this albumout as thebiggest since Justiceappeared onevery singleblog Of course, sparsebeats with plaintivevocals are eminently remixable, especially witha fashionabledubstep aesthetic. Thealbumisalsoincredibly intimate, sometimes feelinglikeeavesdropping ona private conversation, and this intimacytranslates nicelyinto certainschools of downtempo electronicmusic. Thissuccess, then, isunsurprising:hypeishype, thealbum isgreat and thesublime soporific washof downtempo dubstepcontinuesunabated. What isstrange, though,is howlongittookmetorealise itwas good.I loved Justice as soonasI heard them, the same withother blog-hyped acts likeBoysNoize,Burial, MiikeSnow and AnimalCollective.ButI hatedtheXx: boring, depressingandinexplicably lovedby everyone. Maybeit'salackof immediacy.I always hated The Smiths, gratingat Morrissey's intonationandboredbythe :pace. I have spent an adolescence bouncingoff walls and grinningtobigsillydrops, offensivelycrunchysynths and unashamedly yobbishtunes, buthadalways feltthat somethingwas missing.A'Sunday Playlist'at Uniattempted toaddress this void, filling up withacoustic tunes and minimalhouse, but that lost itspurpose whenI graduated and nolonger had whole days to sacrifice tolyingin bed andlisteningtosoporific indiemusic.
