SeniorNews LineThere’s a way to possibly reduce the risk of dementia or cognitive impairment, or lessen its impact if it strikes, and it doesn’t involve taking a pill. The medical journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings recently published a review of the literature to see if there was any evidence of its theory that exercise can help fight dementia. After looking at 1,600 papers, it reported that, yes, aerobic exercise “significantly reduced” the risk of dementia and reduced the risk of mild cognitive impairment. Additionally, exercise helped to slow the diseases after it started. It doesn’t happen overnight, of course. In one study, it took 6 to 12 months for the test results to show up, but the literature showed that participants had better spatial memory and slower loss of brain matter. In another study, brain scans (MRI) showed better “connectivity,” meaning that the pathways in the brain improved. Even more, exercise was associated with a slowing of dementia caused by small blood vessel disease.

What does this mean for us? It means that aerobic exercise, or anything that gets the heart pumping and increases the need for oxygen, results in better blood flow to the brain. Brain pathways stay open and cognitive abilities are preserved or improved.Aerobic exercise, however, doesn’t necessarily mean we need to work out at the gym. Daily walks at a rate that pumps up the heart rate a bit, swimming, seated workouts and senior fitness classes can all help.More studies need to be done, but the review of all that literature indicates that we’re on the right track if we exercise. Ask your doctor before you start anything new.

MONEY MINUTIAE➧ America has had paper money since before it was even a nation. The Massachusetts Bay Colony issued it first in 1690. In 1775, in the midst of the Revolutionary War, paper currency was issued to finance the conflict, with the anticipation of tax revenues to cover it. The paper notes soon devalued, due to a lack of strong financial backing and the ease of counterfeiting. ➧ Beginning in 1877, all U.S. currency was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, an agency of the Treasury Department. The bills were 25 percent larger than present-day money. In 1929, the size was reduced, and all bills conformed to the style of having a portrait on the front and a monument on the back.➧ Can you name the individuals on the front and the item on the back of each denomination of currency? Of course, you know Washington is on the $1 bill, but did you know that the Great Seal of the United States is on the back? Lincoln is on the front of the $5 bill, with the Lincoln Memorial on the back. The $10 bill features the portrait of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, with the U.S. Treasury Building on the flip side. Seventh President Andrew Jackson’s face graces the front of the $20 bill, with the White House featured on the back. Civil War general and 18th President Ulysses Grant is on the $50 bill with the U.S. Capitol on the back, and Benjamin Franklin can be seen on the $100 bill, with Independence Hall on the reverse. ➧ The average $1 bill will be in circulation about 42

months. The life span of the $5 and $10 denominations is 16 to 18 months and 24 months for the $20 bill. A $50 bill will last about 55 months, with the $100 bill’s span averaging 89 months. ➧ 1946 was the last year that $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 bills were printed. ➧ Washington, D.C.’s Bureau of Printing and Engraving occupies 25 acres of floor space. There is an additional printing plant in Fort Worth, Texas. During Fiscal Year 2010, the Bureau printed about 6.4 billion notes, including 1.86 billion $1 bills and about 2.27 billion $20s. That’s approximately 26 million bills a day. Nine tons of ink are used daily to print the day’s total face value of about $974 million. 95 percent of that amount is being used to replace notes already in circulation. It costs about 9.6 cents to print each bill. ➧ The Bureau’s offset printing presses are over 50 feet long with a weight of more than 70 tons. They spit out about 10,000 sheets of currency per hour. ➧ We call it “paper money,” but it’s actually made of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen, not like regular paper, which uses wood pulp. Because of its durability, a bill can be double-folded (first forward, then backward) 4,000 times before it will tear.➧ Currency began a redesign process in 2003 to make it more difficult to counterfeit. Background colors and watermarks were added, as well as a 3-D security thread that glows under an ultraviolet light.

Keep the change! This week, we’re talking about the changes that U.S. currency has undergone since it was first issued in the 17th century.

2) whether practitioners notify patients of critical test results within the correct time frame; and 3) whether practitioners notify patients of normal test results. The recent inspection and report, “Management of Test Results in Veterans Health Administration Facilities,” checked outpatient test results at 25 VHA facilities. Here are some of the findings:Patients not informed (at all) of critical lab results: 4 percent; of critical radiology results: 11 percent. Patients not informed within the required time frame of critical radiology results: 10 percent; of critical pathology results: 12 percent. Patients not informed (at all) of normal pathology results: 45 percent. When you’re getting medical care, you need to be proactive. When a doctor orders tests, write down what those tests are for. Starting at the 72-hour mark after the tests are done, call your doctor and leave a message, saying that you’d like the results of your tests. The reason: The results of most tests will be completed by then.

When you see a doctor and he or she orders tests, you need to know what those results are. If they’re normal, you can relax. If there is a problem, you need to know that as well so there can be a follow up.One way or the other, you expect a call.Back in 2002, the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General issued a report with recommendations for handling the communication of abnormal test results. A recent inspection to check on the management of test results looked at three areas to see if further improvement is necessary: 1) Whether the written policies effectively cover the communication of critical test results for radiology, lab and pathology;

don’t delay! opt out of online databases

There is a new step to be taken these days when it comes to guarding your credit: look yourself up online. There are dozens of online sites that assemble public records and publicly available information and offer it for sale. Information that can be purchased includes telephone number, home address, real estate deed, professional licensing, lawsuits, births, divorces, marriages, deaths, household demographics. Bankruptcies, email address, felonies and tax liens can be included, and so much more. Some of them will provide a satellite map with an arrow pointing to your house.Let’s say you look up your name on a site such as Intelius.com. You’ll likely find the name of your spouse and children next to yours. To your surprise you might find someone else’s name listed as well. This might be your first clue that someone has stolen your identity and has taken out a loan or made a purchase, combining your information. If this happens to you, act quickly.Call one of the credit bureaus and instigate a credit alert. One is required to tell both of the other two, so you’re saved that step.Go to creditreport.com and order your credit reports from all three bureaus. Read them carefully when they arrive. While you’re waiting, opt out of as many online database sites as you can. Most of them don’t make it easy, but the fewer places that have your information, the better. Often there is an opt-out page, but you’ll have to hunt for it. You’ll need a photo file of your drivers license with the photo and number blacked out. You’ll have to upload or fax that information as well as specify which name you wish to have them delete. This can be tricky: You might be listed as first name and last name, or your middle initial might be included, or your first two initials might be used instead of names. Ask for all of them to be deleted. You’ll need to check again every few months. The reason: As more and more databases are sharing their records, or as you make transactions, your name could come up again. You’ll need to delete it every time you find your name appearing. As a general rule, when you open a new account, opt out of having your information shared. It’s no guarantee that your name won’t get out, but it’s a small step.

Puppy Isn’t GrowingBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a beautiful, fluffy pup at a nearby shelter. A worker there described it as a Russian sheepdog. She said “Curty” should grow up into a large dog with a lot of energy. So far, I haven’t found this to be true. Curty hasn’t grown much beyond his height when we adopted him, and he doesn’t seem to have the energy I have seen in shepherd breeds, although he is pretty playful and was easy to housebreak. Are there any health problems he might have, or do we just have a mixed breed dog that isn’t going to take on purebred characteristics? — Jerry C., Burlington, Vt.DEAR JERRY: There are several types of sheepdogs hailing from Russia and surrounding regions, so it’s hard to say exactly which breed you have. Indeed, you may have a mixed-breed dog, if the shelter wasn’t able to provide any information on Curty’s former home. The best thing to do is take Curty to the veterinarian for

a checkup. Explain that he isn’t growing as fast as you thought he would and that he doesn’t have a lot of energy. The vet can check for any signs of underlying health issues.Curty could be a perfectly healthy pup, but just a mixed-breed dog who is developing normally and won’t be very big. An even-tempered, playful, well-socialized, easy-to-train dog isn’t a bad thing. But do make sure that he’s healthy and that there are no hidden health problems.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter was diagnosed recently with a mildly overactive thyroid gland. She is going to have another test in one month. What can be done to bring her thyroid readings to normal without taking medicine for it? What health problems are caused as a result of an overactive gland? — M.M.ANSWER: The thyroid gland — located in the neck — produces thyroid hormone, a hormone with many functions. At young ages, it fosters growth. It enhances brain activity. It’s involved with the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. It keeps body weight on the lean side. It prevents the heart from slowing down. It’s involved with the production of body heat. It keeps cell chemistry perking along at the optimum rate.Hyperthyroidism, an overactive gland, pushes all the above

functions into overdrive. People lose weight in spite of eating more food. The heart races even when people are at rest. Hands tend to shake. At a room temperature comfortable for most, affected people feel hot. The eyes often bulge. Menstrual periods are thrown off their normal cycle. One of the major causes of an overactive gland is Graves disease. In this condition, the body makes antibodies that stimulate the gland to produce excessive amounts of its hormone. The gland enlarges — becomes a goiter.I don’t know of a way to treat the gland reliably without resorting to medicines or surgery. Medicines for hyperthyroidism are methimazole or PTU. The medicine chosen is taken for six months to two years and then stopped. If a person relapses, the medicine has to be restarted. Radioactive iodine is another treatment. When people hear the word “radioactive,” they cringe. In the decades and decades of its use, radioactive iodine hasn’t been responsible for cancer. The iodine makes a beeline to the gland and puts it out of commission. It’s similar to having surgery without a scalpel.Surgical removal of all or part of the gland is the third option for this condition. The booklet on the thyroid gland explains both an overactive and underactive gland. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue — No. 401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This morning, on looking into the mirror, I got a shock. My right eye has a large, red blotch on the white part. It looks like blood. I don’t have any pain, and my sight is fine. What is this? I can’t remember hitting my eye. Could I have done so during sleep? — B.B.ANSWER: You describe a subconjunctival hemorrhage. “Hemorrhage” is far too strong a word to use here. It’s actually a small amount of blood that comes from a broken capillary, one of the tiniest and most delicate of blood vessels. Capillaries break for innocent reasons. A cough or sneeze can break one. Most of the time, people have no recollection of anything happening that caused the break. “Subconjunctival” means the leak occurred under the transparent membrane that covers the eye, the conjunctiva.By the time you read this, the splotch should have vanished.

individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters

“Judy: A Legendary Film Career”by John Fricke

(Running Press, $30)Reviewed by Larry Cox

Seventy-five years ago this autumn, “Pigskin Parade,” a film musical that featured a rather tired plot involving a college football game, opened in theaters around the country. The cast included Stuart Erwin, Betty Grable, comedian Patsy Kelly, singer Tony Martin and the Yacht Club Boys. Judy Garland also appeared in the film and was listed 10th — or dead last — on the promotional poster.Although the film was not a major box-office hit, moviegoers did take notice of Garland and the incredible energy she brought to the screen. During the years that followed, she evolved to become one of the world’s greatest entertainers. In addition to her film work, she was a frequent performer on network radio, a major talent at Decca records and did concert tours that brought her international fame.John Fricke, winner of two Emmy Awards, has compiled a coffee table book that documents Garland’s film work in unprecedented detail. His text is supplemented with more than 600 images, many published for the first time. This book is divided into four main parts spanning the years from 1936 to 1963. Along with her film work, there is a brief biography and highlights of her radio, television and concert work, contemporary reviews and comments from her co-stars and co-workers. Also included are musical number listings, synopses and production histories. Most intriguing, however, are the film productions for which she was supposedly considered but for one reason or another failed to do. For example, one only has to look at the preproduction costume stills of “Annie Get Your Gun” to wonder what that movie would have been like if Garland had starred in it as originally planned instead of Betty Hutton.Judy Garland was a superstar who helped redefine American entertainment and left an indelible mark on our popular culture. John Fricke has compiled a fitting tribute that not only showcases Garland’s film roles and achievements, but celebrates one of this country’s brightest talents.

Struggling Montoya Stays OptimisticJuan Pablo Montoya began competing regularly in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series in 2007. He was named Rookie of

the Year, which came as no surprise since Montoya is one of the racing world’s more recognizable names, not to mention one of its prodigious talents.Yet Montoya — who won the CART championship in 1999 as a rookie, won the Indianapolis 500 in 2000 and the Grand Prix of Monaco in 2003 — has yet to blossom into full-fledge stock-car stardom.Montoya, who just turned 36, is the first foreign-born driver to win more than once in Cup competition. Both his victories have occurred on road courses. He made the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2009. Entering the rain-delayed Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, Montoya, who is from Bogota, Colombia, but now lives in Miami, ranked 18th in the point standings. It’s been a dreary season not just for Montoya, but for his team, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. Montoya’s teammate, Jamie McMurray, had slumped to 25th entering the Chicagoland race.“I think the No. 1 car (McMurray) has been having a really rough season, and they have been trying to change

things around, and it hasn’t really come to them,” Montoya said. “They have had a couple of decent results, but overall it has been a really hard season for them.“For us, we have been up and down. We can get a top-five (finish) here and there, and fight for a win there,

and then run 30th. It is something…we need to understand why it is, and lately it has been getting harder and harder. I think our cars need to get better. We looked at some numbers and stuff, and there is some work to be done. It is going to be interesting.”If Montoya is growing weary of struggling, he hasn’t admitted it. He insists he is happy with the principal owner, Chip Ganassi.“He’s a good guy to work for,” Montoya said. “Like everybody else, he’s got his good days, and

really bad days.“You’ve got to make sure, when you talk to him, you’ve got him on a good day.”

Despite a tough season in 2011, former top NASCAR rookie Juan Pablo

Montoya says he loves working at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

s Anthony Robles entered the world in 1988 with only one leg, his right leg missing all the way to the hip. While such a disability might hinder the activity of an ordinary child, there was nothing ordinary about Anthony. At age 3, he was fitted with a prosthetic leg, but he was so annoyed with the time spent putting it on and taking if off that he abandoned it a few years later and started using crutches or merely hopping. He learned to ride a bike at age 5. At a young age, he began concentrating on exercises that would strengthen the rest of his body and in sixth grade, was his school’s record-holder for the most pushups. Amazingly, at age 14, he played defensive tackle for his Mesa, Arizona, junior high football team. s It was on the wrestling mat, however, that Robles finally realized his true calling. While in eighth grade, after watching an older cousin at team practice, Robles knew he wanted to give the sport a try. By the time he graduated high school, he had a 129-15 record, garnering perfect 48-0 seasons both his junior and senior years, and was one of the top high school wrestlers in the nation. He had served two years as team captain and achieved a wrestling letter three times. s Robles’ rookie year at Arizona State yielded a national rank, just shy of All-American standing. The next year, he nabbed the All-American status and won the Pac 10 Conference Championship, feats he repeated the following year. He was undefeated his senior year

with the Sun Devils, finishing 36-0, as well as winning the 2001 NCAA Division Championship in his weight class. s Robles never expected preferential treatment of any kind. After one particularly poor performance by the team, the coach’s discipline required each wrestler to run laps while carrying a 20-pound sandbag. Although Robles was not expected to participate, he dropped his crutches, grabbed a sandbag, and began to hop around the track. Fall after fall did not deter him from hopping the entire time the team was on the track. In the coach’s words, “I had to turn away. It was hard to watch, but at the same time, it was one of the most inspiring things you could imagine.” s Robles’ unusual technique includes immediately dropping to the mat at the beginning of the match, making his opponent “get low” with him. His “ball and chain” move involves grabbing his foe’s wrist with one hand and pulling that arm through the opponent’s legs, followed by grabbing the elbow with his other hand. s Robles “runs” the mile on crutches, a feat he can complete in eight minutes. Because of his phenomenal upper body strength, he can bench press nearly three times his weight.s Robles’ ambition is to become a motivational speaker, ministering to those with similar handicaps. His mother sums up his disability, “It’s something that was just meant to be, and now we see it as a blessing.”

OVERCOMING THE ODDS: ANTHONY ROBLESIf you don’t follow the sport of wrestling, you may not be familiar with the name Anthony Robles. Let Tidbits bring you up to date on the feats of this remarkable

young man who has refused to allow a disability to defeat him.

RepaiRinG daMaGed dRywallQUESTION: Last week while moving furniture, my sons accidentally shoved an end table against the wall and punched a hole in it. How can I fix this? — Charity in Lansing, Mich.ANSWER: Ouch! Fortunately, drywall holes are not too expensive a proposition in terms of repair. You can even get your sons to help, turning an accident into a learning experience. For supplies, you’ll need a power drill (for driving screws), a putty knife, a drywall/wallboard saw, a box cutter or drywall knife, drywall tape (a type of mesh tape), a drywall repair patch (a large, self-sticking mesh that can be cut to fit), drywall compound, sandpaper and matching paint. If the hole is pretty large — more than a couple of inches in diameter — you will need a spare sheet or piece of drywall (also called wallboard in some places), as well as scraps of plywood and drywall screws. For small holes, less than an inch or two in diameter, brush away debris and ease any jagged edges back into position. Cut away dangling or sharp edges. Grab a peel-and-stick repair patch, trimming if needed so that the edges extend at least an inch beyond the edges of the hole. Stick in place. With the putty knife, smooth on one coat of drywall compound, feathering the edges into the wall. Let it dry and smooth on a second coat. Once that is completely dry, sand the compound smooth, then paint to match the surrounding area. Note: If you have wallpaper instead of paint, you can patch the wall the same way and then patch with a matching scrap piece of wallpaper.Larger holes need more support than a plain mesh can provide, so you’ll need to replace the damaged drywall. Using a ruler and pencil, draw a square around the edges of the hole, giving about a quarter inch of space from each jagged edge. Next, carefully cut away the drywall, following those lines. Now you have a clean square to work with. Next insert those spare plywood strips. These go behind the drywall hole, providing a backing for your drywall patch to attach to. Hold each strip in place and drive a drywall screw through the drywall about 1/2 inch above the hole and 1/2 inch below.Next, cut your drywall patch to fit the hole. It actually needs to be a tiny bit smaller than the hole, about 1/8 inch, so the patch blends better. Press the patch against the plywood backing strips and drive screws through the patch, two at the top and two at the bottom, and into the backing strips. Finally, blend the patch in. Run mesh drywall tape over the edges of the patch so that it covers the gaps. Then, smooth drywall compound over the mesh tape, feathering into the wall (you don’t have to put compound over the center of the patch). Finish the same way as described for the smaller patch.HOME TIP: If sanding drywall compound creates too much dust, try smoothing using a damp sponge or wet sander, then let dry completely before painting the area.

THIS SUCKER PUNCH WASN’T A CHEAP SHOTIt wasn’t a cheap shot that Floyd Mayweather threw in his championship bout against Jayhawker Victor Ortiz…after all, the undefeated and still champion of the worrrrrrld walked out of the ring with $25 million boxes of ziti after that fight. In other words, Ortiz got it on the chin, Mayweather got in the bank. For those of you who missed it, Floyd “Money” Mayweather (42-0) defended his title a few weeks ago against Victor Ortiz (29-3-2), a fighter 10 years his junior and in an entirely different league.Though the 34-year-old Mayweather appeared a bit paunchy, he retained and/or won a portion of the welterweight title, if anyone out there cares, and he did so in dramatic fashion — namely, by smacking Ortiz around the ring for three rounds, in merciless fashion. Finally, Ortiz fought back. He summoned up the courage and landed a few combinations. He got Mayweather on the ropes and instead of using his fists, he bulled into Mayweather, head butting him in mouth. The referee, Joe Cortez, immediately separated the two fighters and took a point from Ortiz. And then Ortiz inexplicably went all peacenik

on Mayweather.Watch the fight on YouTube (I did ... I wasn’t paying the $50 for the pay-per-view) and you will see Ortiz touch gloves with Mayweather, then hug him, then kiss him on the cheek. As Cortez handled ringside business, Ortiz again tried to make peace with Mayweather, but was unable to score another kiss. Then Cortez gave the signal to resume, but Ortiz kept his gloves down and moved in for a little more sugar.Mayweather had enough smooching. He smashed Ortiz with a left hook, then dropped him with a straight right. Cortez stopped the fight. The crowd booed. It looked like a wrestling scenario…it was as if you were waiting for the British Bulldogs to come running into the ring with folding chairs as “Mean” Gene Ockurland tried to make sense of the fracas.Instead, Mayweather sparred with HBO’s Larry Merchant (who comically said he’d have decked Mayweather if he was 50 years younger…yeah, in an alternate universe, maybe) and told the truth.“We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break,” Mayweather said. “In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times.”Cortez agreed, even if he seemed stunned as it happened in the ring.“I made the signal,” he said. “You don’t have to say anything. These guys know the rules. Victor made two mistakes — his first one was being a bad boy, and his second one was being too much of a good boy.And that’s the lesson learned here, kids. Cheap shot? Naw…you’re in the ring to fight, not hug and kiss. Roger that, Victor?

Collectors

should be aware that grinders are still being manufactured, and reproductions of the older models are plentiful.

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

There are two kinds of fear: Fear that is good — keeps us from driving 200 mph, picking up a rattler snake, jumping off the side of a building, or other foolish things that you may have hidden in your closet…and Fear that is harmful — This is the “spirit” of fear. This fear paralyzes us, keeps us from doing things we could or should do. Things that God is calling us to do.

Every single day we make choices that show whether we are courageous or cowardly. We choose between the right thing and the convenient thing, sticking to a conviction or caving in for the sake of comfort, greed or approval. We choose either to take a carefully thought-out risk or to crawl into a shrinking shell of safety, security and inactivity. We choose to believe in God and trust him, even when we do not always understand his ways, or to second-guess him, trust our selves and cower in the corners of doubt and fear.

The end result of living in fear is draining. Fear steals, kills and destroys our dreams and desires. Many times we do not share our faith with someone because of fear. Sometimes we don’t get involved in service to the kingdom because of fear.

Fear is the perception of lost power but as Christians we live in the truth that God did not take our power He gave us power. In Philippians 4:13 we are instructed “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” That means anything God wants me to do, I can do it.

Have you ever gone through a dark period where you have prayed and prayed and yet it seemed that no help was coming your way? Perhaps you felt as though God had disappeared and you were all alone to face your trials and burdens?

Well God has a very special message for you today — He will never leave you nor forsake you — you are never alone!

Yes, there are times when God withdraws to test our faith. He wants us to trust Him in the darkness, as well as in the light. When we sense and feel the presence of the Holy Spirit by faith we are certain that God will never leave us nor forsake us.

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

z It was 20th-century American novelist, poet and performer William S. Burroughs who made the following sage observation: “Most of the trouble in this world has been caused by folks who can’t mind their own business, because they have no business of their own to mind, any more than a smallpox virus has.”z The first traffic signal, which began operating in Cleveland in 1914, wasn’t much of a labor-saver. To operate it, a police officer had to sit in a nearby booth where he could oversee the traffic.z Those who study such things claim that at any given moment, there are 850,000 people inside a Walmart store. And that’s just in the United States — there’s no telling how many people are shopping at Walmarts abroad.z California Tech conducted a study in which consumers were offered two samples of the same

wine, but each sample was labeled at a different price point. Unaware that the wines they were drinking were identical, most participants said they preferred the more expensive sample.z If you’re planning a trip to Turkey, be sure to book a stay at the Marmara Antalya on the country’s southern coast. This unique hotel revolves, offering ever-changing views of the Mediterranean Sea to its guests.z Are you a phonophile? If so, you might be finding it hard to pursue your passion in this digital age — a phonophile (also known as a gramophile) is a collector of phonograph records. z Between 70 percent and 80 percent of all the Earth’s fresh water is stored in glaciers, 99 percent of which are found in the Arctic and in Antarctica.

Suppose someone offers you a bet where you can’t lose, you might win, and the worst that can happen is that you break even. Presumably you’d grab a bet like that with alacrity — such propositions certainly don’t come along every day.Occasionally, this sort of situation arises at the bridge table. A hand comes along where a certain play might gain you a trick, while there is no corresponding chance of the play costing you a trick.Take this case where you’re in six spades and West leads a trump. You’re off to a bad start because if West had led anything else, you’d have made the slam easily by ruffing two hearts in dummy. But there’s no point in crying over spilt milk, so you do the best you can under the circumstances. You win the spade with the king, ruff a diamond, cash the A-K of hearts, ruff a heart and ruff another diamond. You then cash the A-Q of trumps, bringing you to the critical point of the play. You might feel tempted to try a club finesse now, but that would be a mistake. It would give you only about an even chance of making the slam.Instead, you should lead your last heart! This play costs you nothing, but it might — and in the actual case does — give you the slam. East wins the heart with the queen and must return a club or a diamond into dummy’s pair of A-Q’s, handing you your 12th trick. It is true that if West turns up with the missing heart, you will have done absolutely nothing to advance your cause. In that case, though, you’d still have the club finesse to fall back on. By leading your fourth heart, you therefore have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Q: With the Emmy Awards a recent memory — and Jane Lynch doing a fabulous job hosting — I was wondering if you could tell me who will be the host for the next Academy Awards? — Deidre S., via e-mailA: Actor/comedian Eddie Murphy, 50, has been selected to host the 84th annual Academy Awards. The ceremony, which is to be held Feb. 12, 2012, will mark the first time that the funnyman has hosted the show. His selection as the only host marks a return to the single-host format, which has gone by the wayside in recent years as the Academy opted for multiple hosts — some choices successful (Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin) and some not so successful (James Franco and Anne Hathaway). Eddie says he is “enormously honored” to be given hosting duties, and I’m excited to see what he has in store for viewers.

i i iQ: I read in your column a few months back that Alicia Silverstone had given birth to a son, and it got me to thinking if she has plans to return to the big, or small, screen soon? — Darren F., Portland, Ore.A: Alicia returns to her comedic roots with the help of Amy Heckerling, who also gave the beautiful actress her big break when she was chosen to portray Cher in the classic high-school comedy “Clueless.” With Amy writing and directing and Alicia starring, the new film “Vamps” is gearing up to bring to the new influx of vampire movies what “Clueless” brought to high-school-comedy movies.“Vamps” centers on Alicia (“Goody”) and Krysten Ritter (“Stacy”) as they try to live as “good” vampires in New York City. “Vamps” also stars Sigourney

Weaver and Malcolm McDowell, and should hit theaters some time next year.

i i iQ: I’m so glad that “The Mentalist” has returned for its fourth season, and I wanted to know when the previous season would be out on DVD. — Steven S., Akron, Ohio

A: Simon Baker and the rest of the crew have their work cut out for them this season, but now you can relive season three — which proved to be spellbinding and suspenseful in its own right — anytime you’d like at home, as Warner Home Video recently released it on DVD. “The Mentalist: The Complete Third Season” is a five-disc collection featuring all 24 episodes, plus two featurettes and some unaired scenes.

i i iQ: I know you’re a fan of “Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura,” so you might be able

to tell me: Will it be back for a third season? — Patrick L., via e-mailA: I am thrilled to report that truTV recently announced that an eight-episode third season of “Conspiracy Theory” will air in 2012, with Jesse at the helm and June Sarpong at his right hand, along with newcomers Tyrel Ventura (Jesse’s son) and Sean Stone (Oliver Stone’s son). Like me, I’m sure you can’t wait to see a new season of myth-debunking, truth-seeking and Ventura-style entertainment.
