SeniorNews LineThe U.S. Department of Agriculture has been trying to help us eat healthier for a very long time.Back in 1943, we had “The Basic Seven” — seven categories of food we needed to eat on a daily basis. Serving sizes weren’t included. In 1956, the USDA switched to “The Basic Four,” and in 1979 to the “Hassle-Free Guide to a Better Diet.” It added a new food category with fats, sweets and alcohol. In 1984, we got the “Food Wheel: A Pattern for Daily Food Choices.” This one included serving sizes.Eight years later, in 1992, the “Food Guide Pyramid” came along with those tiny pictures of food. In 2005 we got the MyPyramid Food Guidance System, which was supposed to be a simplified pyramid. Now, in an effort to keep us all eating correctly, we have “MyPlate.” The icon is cute: a plate divided into four unequal sections, with a fork on the left and a circle above the plate for “Dairy.”All this work, and I still didn’t know how much the USDA intends for me to eat.

On the website [www.choosemyplate.gov] I clicked on the Get a Personalized Plan link and entered my age, weight, height and level of exercise. It came back with a diet plan for me, including information such as “Make at least half your grains whole grains,” “Vary your veggies” and “Focus on fruit” with specific tips on how to do that. While the “Plate” is a bit silly, as was the Pyramid, the information behind it is solid. Check the USDA website and see what it has to say.You know, of course, that an entrepreneur somewhere is busily creating MyPlate plates with the appropriate sections all outlined for us.

were exposed to Agent Orange. But the report points out ways you could have been exposed, and these might refresh your memory about events. If you’ve been turned down, here are some questions to ask yourself:Did your ship ever dock? For the duration of that docking, your ship was brown.Did it take on any local fruits or vegetables or fish? The water to grow those vegetables or the water the fish swam in could have been contaminated.Did your ship ever take up water for distillation within 12 miles of shore? The rule was not to, as that water was considered polluted, but exceptions did occur. Were you ever under overspray, perhaps near the Ranch Hand aircraft? It dumped chemicals as far as 6 miles offshore. To read this report online for free, go to http://books.nap.edu and put Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure in the search box. If you see the 2011 next to it, that’s the one you want. Do searches for words like “distill,” “expose,” “food,” “brown” and so on.

If you were Blue Water Navy and have illnesses that point to Agent Orange exposure, you’ve likely been turned down for benefits by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA reasons that if you w ere offshore, you couldn’t possibly have been in contact with something that was sprayed on foliage on the land — unless your ship was “brown water” for some period of time.We know better, of course. The Committee on Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure, at the request of the VA and in conjunction with the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, explored the “mechanisms and routes of exposure.” Unfortunately, its report on the findings took the middle road and failed to state with certainty that Blue Water veterans

SALTWATER (continued):evaporation. It is totally landlocked, and the deeper areas are the saltiest. There are an estimated 1.9 billion tons of potassium chloride salt in the Dead Sea, which are harvested by using a system of evaporation ponds. s The McMurdo Dry Valley in Antarctica has a small pond that is actually considered the saltiest body of water on earth. Don Juan Pond is an ankle-deep mirror pond between mountain peaks. It never freezes, even in temperatures that go as low as -40°F (-40°C). s The Great Salt Lake near Salt Lake City, Utah, is another endorheic lake, sometimes called “America’s Dead Sea.” The Jordan, Weber and Bear Rivers empty into the lake and deposit around 1.1 million tons (over 997 million kg) of minerals in the lake annually.s The Great Salt Lake provides habitat for brine shrimp, native birds, shorebirds and waterfowl, including the largest population of Wilson’s Phalarope in the world. This small migratory bird is halophilic, which means “salt loving.”s Another large endorheic lake is the Caspian Sea. This sea is bordered by five countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Iran. The largest lake on the planet at 143,000 square miles (371,000 sq km), it is called a sea because the Romans who discovered it found it to be salty.

s The Caspian and Dead Seas both have areas of sandy beaches and popular tourist resorts built along the banks. The Great Salt Lake has two parks, Antelope Island State Park and Great Salt Lake State Park, that are popular places to boat, swim and enjoy nature. s A large resort, the Saltaire Pavilion, was built along the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake in 1893 as a joint effort of the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad Company and the Mormon Church. The resort was built on 2,000 pylons driven into the shore of the lakebed, had a long bridgeleading out to the water for swimming and lounging. It became known as the western “Coney Island.”

takiNg the Mystery Out Of Credit sCOres

FICO, short for Fair Isaac Corporation, was founded in 1956 by a mathematician and an engineer who were interested in the analysis of numbers — including credit scores. Their work gave creditors a means of predicting which customers are more or less likely to default on loans. Your score can pre-determine how you’re treated by creditors:1. A high credit scores equates to a lower anticipated rate of default.2. Creditors raise or lower the interest rates they offer you based on your likely risk of default.3. The higher your credit score, the better the deal you’ll get on interest and the more money you’re likely to save over time. The front screen of the MyFico.com website gives a perfect example of potential savings: “A 100-point difference in your FICO score could mean over $40,000 extra in interest payments over the life of a 30-year mortgage on a $300,000 home loan.”FICO scores range from 300 to 850 and are based payment history, length of credit history, new credit you might open, amount of established credit and the types of credit. A mix of credit types — perhaps vehicle, mortgage, credit card — will yield a better score than all credit cards or vehicle only. With all the lender emphasis on credit worthiness, a simple late payment can damage your credit score. The later it is, the more damage is done. Here’s an additional credit fact: Unfair though it is, the higher your credit score, the bigger the “ding” to your credit if you do miss payments. Here is a comparison of late payment and bankruptcy at two levels of credit score and the length of time for the score to rise again:Thirty days late: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 600-620, but can rise again in nine months. A score of 780 might be cut to 670-690, and it could take three years for the score to rise again.Bankruptcy: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 530-550, and could take five years to rise again. A score of 780 might be cut to 540-560, and it could take seven to 10 years for the score to rise again. For more information on keeping your credit score healthy, visit MyFico.com.

With the huge size of the Caspian, the saltiness varies greatly. The southern Caspian is more salty than the northern portion. There are 130 rivers that flow into the Caspian with the Volga in the north being the largest.

s Major oil and gas production takes place along the edges of the Caspian Sea. In addition, caviar harvested from the lake’s sturgeon, which are large ancient-looking fish with large mouths and no scales, is a major commodity. There are three types of sturgeon in the region: the Beluga, Russian Sturgeon and the Stellate Sturgeon. The Beluga is the largest member of the Sturgeon family, sometimes exceeding 14 feet (4.3 m) and weighing in excess of 2,000 pounds (907 kg).

General Henry Hugh Shelton is a retired America career military officer of the United States Army. He served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 to 2001.

PAPER BAGSPaper or plastic? In the 1980s and ‘90s, that was a question asked frequently at grocery

stores. More recently, reusable cloth bags are being promoted in conjunction with a “greener” lifestyle. Let’s look at the development and history of paper bags.

F Francis Wolle, a Pennsylvania botanist who later became a minister, invented the paper bag-making machine in 1852. Working at his father’s store, he saw the need for something to help customers carry their groceries home. F Wolle received the patent for his machine in the United States and then later in England and France. It was the first of its kind and with further advancements added by others, is very similar to the machines still in use today. F In 1869, Wolle, his brother and other men involved in the paper bag industry founded the Union Paper Bag Machine Company in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.F Probably surprising to many is that a woman first put forth the idea and secured the patent for a device to cut, fold and paste paper bag bottoms, creating flat-bottomed bags. Some tried to discredit Margaret Knight, but she fought and won recognition for her paper bag machine. She was employed by the Columbia Paper Bag Company in Springfield, Massachusetts, when she invented her machine in 1870-71. During this time, it was unusual for a woman to get recognition as an inventor. Sometimes called the “woman Edison,” she is credited with 22 patents and 90 inventions.F Charles Stillwell, a Union soldier during the Civil War, added another patent to the development of paper bags in 1883. His bag machine allowed for flat bottoms and pleated sides, which made the bags stackable.• Stillwell’s bags were called S.O.S. or “self-opening sacks.” With the birth

of supermarkets in the 1930s, the demand for paper bags skyrocketed. They were strong, easy to use and inexpensive and quickly became popular around the world. F Savannah, Georgia, was chosen by Union Bag and Paper Company in 1935 as the location for a $4 million plant, thrilling the local area, providing 500 jobs in a depressed economy. F In 1956, Union Bag merged with Camp Manufacturing and became Union Camp. In its busiest years, 5,500 people were employed in Savannah; today there are about 700. It is the largest mill of its kind in the world. Over 1 million cords of long-fibered southern pine are used to make 35 million paper bags per day. That is over 9 billion per year! F The largest paper bag manufacturer today is a privately owned company, Duro Bag, opened in 1953 and owned by the family of founder David Shor. It is based in Florence, Kentucky. The company has a strong program for recycling its waste and using recycled paper. F Plastic grocery bags were introduced to the supermarket industry in 1977. Kroger and Safeway started the craze to replace traditional paper bags with polyethylene “t-shirt” type bags in 1982. Most grocery stores today offer both types of bags but also encourage shoppers to use cloth bags. F With the wide availability of inexpensive paper bags, Americans have used them for groceries, garbage, lunch bags and more for years.

If you toss a coin, it is even money that it will not come down heads. If you toss two coins, the odds are 3-to-1 they will not both be heads. (Toss three coins, and the odds become 7-to-1.)It is not really necessary to understand how probabilities of this sort are determined, but it is important to recognize that bridge leans heavily on such calculations. A player who understands and abides by probabilities will do very well over the long haul.Consider this deal where South took the opening diamond lead with the king and led a low trump to dummy’s jack. East won with the ace and returned a diamond, taken by declarer with the ace. After cashing the king of trumps, South led a heart to the queen, losing to East’s king. Back came a diamond to West’s ten, and the contract went down one when West cashed the ace of clubs.South did not give himself the best chance for the contract. Instead of leading a trump at trick two, he should have finessed the queen of hearts. True, the queen would lose to the king and East would return a diamond, but, even so, South would make four spades. He would take the diamond return with the ace and finesse the ten of hearts. After the ten won, declarer would discard his diamond loser on the ace of hearts and eventually score 10 tricks. As the hand was actually played, South in effect based all his hopes on the 50 percent chance that West had the king of hearts. But if he had finessed the heart queen at trick two, planning to finesse the ten later if the queen lost to the king, he would have had two chances to make the contract instead of only one. This would have given him about a 3-to-1 chance of succeeding, just about the same probability as the toss of two coins.

Thought of the Week“Hollywoodisaplacewherethey’ll

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

A question arises out of this passage in our “modern” age: When and where am I to live a “life worthy of the calling that we, who are in Christ, have received?” That seems simple, you say. On the surface it is but is it true at home? Paul gives us some markers in verse 2 of this passage that are very challenging.

Am I “completely humble and gentle” at home? It seems that we give our best energy during the day at work and when we arrive home we don’t get leftovers, we give them. Tiredness begets short fuses. Those children, our pride and joy, always leave their bikes in the driveway. Dinner is the same as we had last night — is this what I work so hard earning a buck for and she can’t come up with something new? Saturday was supposed to be my golf day with the boys from the club and now she wants us to go visit her folks. Being completely humble and gentle are nowhere to be found; vague memories at best.

Then, of course, we have the neighbors. I try to love them as the Bible says but look at what a mess they are making of their yard. That really ticks me off. My property value is destroyed by their carelessness. Patient and bearing with one another? Ouch!

And work…though this may be the easiest place

to live as Paul suggests, it is a constant test of what I am to believe and practice. As the pressure increases, my fuse shortens. The day starts fine but by lunch the pressure feels like a straight-jacket and my nerves are shot.

Are you getting the picture? How can Paul and the Lord require this of us? It seems unfair. I cannot live this passage out 24/7. You are right; you cannot live out this passage or any of the others just by calling yourself a Christian. Only Christ in you can. The Apostle John teaches us that “Those who obey His commands live in Him and He in them. And this is how we know that He lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.” I John 3:24

We cannot do what was intended to be His domain. Christ in us will do for us what is impossible. “Apart from me you can do nothing,” Jesus told us. We now know that it is true. I need to get out of the way and yield to Him the full rights to do with my life as He knows it should be done. That is the guarantee that what Paul speaks of will happen. Nothing short of that will work — it was not intended to.

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

Pets Grieve, TooBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We had two dogs for the past six years. We just lost “Sassy” two days ago. Our remaining dog, “Barry,” is so sad. How can we help him? He barely eats, and he just lays around not showing interest in anything. I realize it is soon after losing his best friend, but is this normal? We are sad also, but want to help him if we can. — Norma in OhioDEAR NORMA: It’s very normal for a dog to grieve for a lost companion, and Barry is showing all the signs of deep grief: loss of appetite, depression, lack of interest in things that normally stimulate him. In a few days, he may begin pacing around the house, searching for something — another common behavior, particularly after a dog loses a companion animal like Sassy.Be supportive of Barry over the next few months. Give him lots of love and attention. However, don’t break his training routine or feeding routine, nor allow him to do things he normally wouldn’t be allowed to do, like

climb on the furniture. He needs structure as well as support. When Barry searches the house for her, call him over and give him a blanket or toy that Sassy liked to use and that still has her scent. Sometimes an item that reminds a pet of a lost companion is comforting. Other times the pet will reject the item — don’t scold or force it on him.How long will Barry grieve? Like humans, there’s no set time. Some dogs return to their old selves from two to six weeks after a loss; others take many months. And some always retain some sign that they still miss their old friend, years down the road.

s On July 8, 1776, a 2,000-pound copper-and-tin bell now known as the “Liberty Bell” rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. As the British advanced toward Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, the bell was removed from the city and hidden in Allentown to save it from being melted down by the British and used to make cannons.s On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second

and third presidents of the United States, respectively, die. Both men had been central in the drafting of the historic document.s On July 5, 1865, in London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, later known as the Salvation Army, to wage war against the evils of poverty and religious indifference.s On July 7, 1930, construction of the Hoover Dam begins. Over the next five years, a total of 21,000 men would produce what would be the largest dam of its time. Today, the Hoover Dam generates enough energy each year to serve more than a million people.s On July 9, 1947, in a ceremony held at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower appoints Florence Blanchfield to be a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, making her

the first woman in U.S. history to hold permanent military rank. Blanchfield had served as superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.s On July 6, 1957, Liverpool teenagers John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the first time. Lennon was a member of the Quarry Men, scheduled to play at a public event. Two weeks later, Lennon invited McCartney to join the Quarry Men.s On July 10, 1962, the United States Patent Office issues Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin a patent for his three-point automobile safety belt. The traditional two-point belt had been known to cause severe internal abdominal injuries in the event of a high-speed crash.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the dry type of macular degeneration. I take PreserVision with lutein tablets twice a day. I hear lutein is very good for my eyes, and I would like to take more than the 10 mg a day that I get in my tablets. I don’t know how much is safe. My doctor said he didn’t know. Will macular degeneration leave me completely blind? How long will it be before I cannot see anymore? — C.B.ANSWER: The macula is a small, round area in the center of the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that transmits incoming images to the brain so we can see. The macula is essential for clear, central vision, the kind needed to read, to drive and to recognize faces. Off-to-the-side vision remains. You won’t go completely blind.Furthermore, dry macular degeneration most often advances gradually. It’s the more common variety, accounting for 90

percent of cases. It can stay at its present level for years, even for life. Wet macular degeneration comes about from the growth of blood vessels beneath the retina. Those vessels are fragile and leak fluid. It tends to advance more rapidly.Currently no cure exists for dry macular degeneration. A combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene (or vitamin A), zinc and copper appears to slow moderate macular degeneration’s progression to a more advanced stage. Your PreserVision is one such preparation.Lutein is a plant product that might aid in delaying the advance of dry macular degeneration. At this very moment, a large study is taking place to ascertain the place of lutein in the treatment of this common eye condition. The amount of lutein being tested in the study is 10 mg a day. Lutein appears to be a very safe substance, but I would stick with the 10 mg dose until the present study defines lutein’s place and its optimum dose. The booklet on macular degeneration explains this prevalent eye problem in great detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 701W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

stress disorder. I think someone in my family suffers from it. — A.F.ANSWER: Having faced an event that threatened life or caused serious injury is the basis for post-traumatic stress disorder. The event keeps resurfacing in the mind with a clarity that imparts terror and helplessness, and sometimes guilt. The remembrance can happen during the day or in dreams. An affected person stays in the alert mode at all times. He or she loses interest in life, neglects those around him or her, suffers from fragmented sleep, often erupts in outbursts of anger and is usually quite depressed. Soldiers, firemen, policemen and those who suffered a sexual or physical attack are people who most often develop PTSD. With the combination of talk treatment and medicines, these people can usually regain their equilibrium and resume a normal life.

SALTWATER (continued):s Accidental fires in 1925 and 1931 and an arson fire in the 1970s at Saltaire have made the location famous more for its history than its tourist appeal. The Saltaire boasted the largest dance floor in the world after the rebuilding from the first fire. New investors reopened the venue for music events in 1983.s When we think of life in bodies of saltwater, we often think of whales and sharks, but many other odd and interesting creatures call saltwater home. The largest living crocodilians on earth are saltwater crocodiles, called “salties” by Australians. Average males are 17 feet (5 m) long and 1,000 pounds (450 kg). It is not uncommon for them to be as long as 23 feet (7 m) and 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg). The range of “salties” is Eastern India, Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, so we don’t have to be worried about them in North America.

s A bizarre family of fish called white-blooded or crocodile icefish are found in the cold salty waters of Antarctica and southern South America. Lacking red blood cells in their bodies, these fish are pale, have long snouts, wide mouths and large teeth — hence, their name. Their blood carries less oxygen than the red blood cells of other fish. Because of this, icefish have oversized hearts that pump large volumes of blood at low pressures. s You can bring some of this life into your home or office with a saltwater aquarium. Fill it with colorful fish, sea anemones, jellyfish and other creatures to mimic the abundance of the oceans and seas. s Now, to end this Tidbits on a sweet note. Saltwater taffy is a treat found in many stores, fairs and amusement parks. Is it made from saltwater? No. The most popular story is that a shopkeeper in Atlantic City, New Jersey, gave it the “saltwater” name after his shop was flooded by a tidal surge.

Kurt Busch Closing on Points LeaderFor Kurt Busch, the 2011 season has been a process of ebb and flow…and ebb again. Or vice-versa.

The 32-year-old Busch, the elder of racing brothers, began the season unofficially with a victory in the Budweiser Shootout, followed by finishes of fifth, eighth, ninth and seventh in the Sprint Cup season’s first four “point races.” Then he went into a slump, with finishes of 17th, 16th, 10th, 18th, 22nd, 27th and 14th.After the season’s first four races, Busch stood at the top of the point standings. Seven races later, he had fallen to eighth. But since then, the graph has turned upward again. Busch has finished fourth, ninth and second in the three most-recent races, lifting him back up to sixth in the standings, only 35 points behind leader Carl Edwards.Busch’s disgruntlement was obvious during the rough spots. Changes were made in management at Penske Racing, at least partly in response to Busch’s complaints, many of which were heard by fans over scanners during races. Now, once again, Kurt Busch is a picture of contentment, with results to back it up.Edwards ran into engine trouble at Michigan, almost erasing what had been a comfortable edge in points.

Busch’s runner-up finish at Pocono Raceway was one ahead of younger brother Kyle.“When the point leader has problems, everybody’s just chomping at the bit, licking their lips, going, ‘Wow, look at this, I’m right back in this.’ When you’re having good runs like we are, my little

brother and me, just plugging away, that helps you feel more solid when you get to the month of August, after you get through the Brickyard, making that summer run to the Chase,” said Kurt.Given recent performances, “that summer run to the Chase” seems promising for both Busch brothers.Kurt Busch won the Cup championship in 2004, the first

year the Chase format was implemented. At the time, he drove a Ford for Jack Roush. Now he drives one of two Dodges fielded by Roger Penske.“Right now it’s all about consistency,” said Kurt. “I’d like to break through and get a win just to help us feel more confident in our Chase position.“When the point leader has trouble, everybody benefits from that.”

When he was in school in the 1960s, dyslexia and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were not recognized or dealt with as they are today. Educators didn’t always know what to do with children who had the undiagnosed “differences.”H Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects language processing. People with the condition have a hard time recognizing and decoding words. Reading comprehension and even pronunciation skills are usually lacking. With ADHD, restlessness coupled with impulsivity, frustration, difficulty organizing and completing tasks can lead to behavioral problems in classroom settings. Orfalea flunked two grades in school and was expelled from several schools. He did graduate from high school but was a D- student at the bottom of his class.H In Orfalea’s words, he “had supportive parents, and that made all the difference. I was a sensitive kid. I could have easily fallen through the cracks.” He, like many with similar learning difficulties, had the creative thinking, curiosity, adventurous spirit and boldness to pursue an unusual endeavor. H While Orfalea was a student at the University of Southern California, he realized that photocopiers were a need for students and were not easily accessible.H In 1970, Orfalea borrowed $5,000 from a local bank, rented a small store-front next to a hamburger stand in Isla Vista, close to the University of California, Santa Barbara, and opened the first Kinko’s Copy Center. He also spent time on the sidewalk in front of the store selling pens and pencils from his backpack and encouraged passersby to give his store a try. The tiny store featured one copy machine selling copies at 2.5¢ each, an offset press, film processing and school supplies.H Orfalea saw a need, zeroed in on it and created a company that eventually grew to more than 1,200 locations and 23,000 employees in 10 different countries.H Orfalea attributed the success of his company to the creation of a working environment where employees loved coming to work. The achievement that really made him proud was having Kinko’s named one of the best places to work in America by FORTUNE magazine three years in a row. H Kinko’s was acquired by FedEx Corporation (Federal Express) in February 2004, and the company was called FedEx Kinko’s. In 2008, Kinko’s was dropped from the name, and it was changed to FedEx Office. H Even though Orfalea has never learned to enjoy reading, there are several books about his success. His autobiography “Copy This!” was published in 2005; “The Entrepreneurial Investor,” about investing, came out in 2008; and the latest book, “Two Billion Dollars in Nickels: Reflections on the Entrepreneurial Life,” became available in February 2009. All three books tell his amazing story of rising above his learning differences to achieve success.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

PAUL ORFALEAPaul Orfalea counts his learning problems as

“the blessings that allowed him to see the world differently from his peers.”

Nicknamed “Kinko” because of his curly red hair, he is an extraordinary entrepreneur.

fairy riNgsQUESTION: I believe that I have two areas in my back lawn that are “fairy rings.” They have a center of green grass that is surrounded by dead grass. Is there anything I can do about this? — Fred J., TorontoANSWER: Fairy rings are caused by growth of a certain type of fungi (mushrooms), which, above the surface, grow within the dead or thin area of the circle. Below the surface, a dense fungal mat is usually well established by the time the characteristic “ring” appears on the lawn. These rings measure a couple feet in diameter but gradually expand over time, to as large as 20 feet. The rings are annoying and, like most fungal growth, are very difficult to control. However, there are options to try.One method, which can be undertaken quickly with minimal damage to the lawn, is to reduce the influence of fairy rings. Fertilize the area several times per year with nitrogen-rich fertilizer to mask the fairy rings somewhat. To stimulate grass growth in the dead areas of the rings, you’ll need to aerate and get water beneath the fungal mat (comprised of weblike mycelium fungus) that’s causing the problem. Do this by attaching a root feeder to your garden hose. Punch holes in the dying area about a foot apart and at least 12 inches deep, then insert the root feeder into the holes and saturate the ground underneath the mat with water. Repeat often. The idea is to change the soil moisture, increase airflow, and change the chemical makeup of the soil to retard fungal growth.A more invasive option, which must be undertaken carefully so as not to spread the fungus to other parts of the lawn, is to completely remove the affected sod, cutting out an area 1 foot beyond the edge of the rings. Then, dig out the soil to 1 foot in depth. Note that the sod and soil must be completely isolated from the rest of the lawn and disposed of far away.Replace the soil with new, unaffected soil. Then either reseed or resod. North Dakota State University’s Agricultural Extension recommends reseeding rather than replacing the sod, as the risk of reintroducing the fungi is much lower.HOME TIP: Fungi are the most common cause of lawn disease, but they can be managed and prevented with routine lawn maintenance, including proper watering, fertilization, mowing and ensuring the soil is aerated.

THAT’S NOT HOW YOU DO IT, LEBRONLong ago, during a heated late-night argument over nothing important with a few other guys whom I really didn’t like anyway, I decided to one-up by asking, “Yeah, well…what is it you do?”Really, it was more of a sneer than a question, more of a statement than real curiosity. I was just out of college and blessed with a pretty good job, but it sounded terrible to say. Either way, it turned off my date for the night, who wanted nothing to do with me later on. And rightfully so — I had sounded like a big jerk.I was reminded of that episode while watching the post-game hijinks at the NBA Finals. The question posed to King LeBron James was, “How did it feel knowing there were so many people rooting for you to fail?”LeBron said he didn’t care, adding this gem of jerkdom:“They have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life they had before.”I can’t say I was a LeBron James hater. I maintain a strong dislike for the guy after that incredibly classless “decision” special where he dogged the entire state of

Ohio, but I retain a healthy respect for his abilities.Still, I woke up the next morning and had the same exact number of NBA championships and didn’t choke the night before in front a national audience. My father used to ignore it whenever somebody said to him, “Aw, I would never work a desk job. I need to be out in the open air, picking ‘dem cabbages.” My dad was a very successful businessman. He often sat behind a desk when he wasn’t traveling and providing for his family and working to send his kids to college. So yeah, he kinda resented the remark (though he never responded in kind).Bobby Knight was known for dropping his resume whenever he felt overly challenged by someone in the media. His was more of a “Yeah, well when you win as many games and championships in the NCAA, you come back and ask that question.”The “I have a better job than you” comeback has long been a staple of the sports brat. Super brat John McEnroe was known to drop a “Well, I made $(umpteen) million dollars last year playing tennis…how much do you make, jerk?” (One guy’s response: “You’re all class, John”.)But some people can get close to that one-up line without insulting anybody, and, like in the case of Dean Martin, even get a few laughs.“Man, I feel sorry for all those people in the world who don’t drink,” Martin said. “When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.”Now that’s how you do it.

first-aid kitQ: I have a first-aid “snake bite” pocket pack manufactured by Davis Company, Newark, N.J., sometime during the early years of the past century. It is encased in tin and in fairly good condition. — Sandra, Glen Daniel, W.Va.A: I contacted several collectors, and they seem to agree that your kit is probably worth about $15.

* * *Q: I have a 78-rpm Walt Disney record album of “Pinocchio” that was recorded from the motion picture soundtrack. The album, which was originally given to my husband in 1942, is in excellent condition. I am curious about its value. — Peggy, Sun City West, Ariz.A: RCA issued the record album in 1940. The first edition featured a die-cut design on the cover with additional illustrations from the production inside the album. The second edition, which was marketed later that same year, was issued without either the die-cut or illustrations. According to the “Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles” by Ted Hake, the first issue is worth in the $40 to $150 range, and the second, $25 to $85. With

records, as with most collectibles, condition is extremely important when determining values.

* * *Q: I have a Coca-Cola child’s raincoat, size 5, with hood, and marked “Coca-Cola Made in Taiwan.” Do you have any information on this? — Bellinda, Rutledge, Ala.A: Coca-Cola has produced and given away premiums throughout its history. One of the better references documenting Coca-Cola premiums is “Coca-Cola Collectibles Price Guide” by Allan Petretti (Krause, $49.99). It features more than 4,500 photos of collectibles with current values, and has been considered the “Collector’s and Dealer’s Bible” for more than three decades. I did not find a raincoat in this reference, but it should give you an idea of current values for other Coca-Cola items.

* * *Q: I have two Woman’s Day magazines from the autumn of 1941. Do they have any value? They originally sold for 2 cents each. — Ethel, Coventry, R.I.A: Most Woman’s Day magazines from the WWII era sell for about $5 per copy. Covers, content and condition are all important.
