The Neatest Little Paper Ever Read®
Ee-i-ee-i-oh! This week, with an oink-oink here and a moo-moo there,
Tidbits takes a trip to the farm and looks in on all sorts of farmyard activities.
The 1819 “Farmer’s Almanac” advised, “Think not that because it is winter, a farmer may lie idle. Busy, sir, busy! This is the word for all farmers at all times and seasons.”
The farmer’s field received its name from the ancient Anglo-Saxons. When they were preparing to plant, it was necessary to first clear the heavily forested lands. Areas that had been cleared of trees were referred to as “felled,” hence the name “field.”
A top-of-the-line steel beam plow could be purchased from the 1910 Sears & Roebuck catalogue for about $10. Their best wheelbarrow was $8, while a top-quality 24-tooth hay rake retailed for $18.75.
Cows don’t really have four stomachs, but rather one stomach with four compartments. The stomach muscles send food back into a cow’s mouth to be chewed and swallowed again. If a cow is “chewing her cud,” she is actually re-chewing food she already chewed before! Cows are ruminants, which refers to this type of stomach that sends food back to the mouth.
Texas leads the Unites States in the number of beef cattle, while Wisconsin is the leader in dairy cattle. The country with the most cattle is India, where the cow is considered sacred.
The average dairy cow gives about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. That’s an annual output of about 1,600 gallons per cow.
Although we in North America drink mostly cow’s milk, worldwide, more people drink goat’s milk than cow’s.
Do you speak “chicken?” These feathered creatures have been the inspiration for all kinds of idioms in our language, such as “chicken-hearted” and “chicken-livered” to denote cowardliness. We “walk on eggshells” when we proceed cautiously.

SeniorNews LineThere’s definitely a nip in the air at my house. Chances are your weather has turned cooler, too. It’s time to brace ourselves for winter, no matter where we live.If you haven’t had a flu and pneumonia shot, and if your doctors thinks you need one, do it now.Check your winter clothing. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Go for layers instead of one heavy parka. A shirt, sweater, scarf and coat are better at keeping you warm. Don’t forget to wear a hat! Do you have non-slip footwear? Stay warm inside the house, too. A lightweight vest is perfect for that. Stock up on antiseptic wipes and use them frequently, especially on grocery-cart handles. Is your area subject to power outages? A selection of flashlights placed around the house will allow you to grab one quickly if the lights go out.Do you have drafty windows? Have someone help you install those clear plastic sheets on the inside of windows. Once they’re stretched with a
hair dryer, you can’t even see them.If you have a space heater, be careful with it. They need to be placed well away from curtains and furniture.Add a few canned goods and frozen food items to your shopping list. Don’t forget extra food for your pet, if you have one, as well as bathroom tissue. That way when the weather is extremely cold, you won’t have to go out. Put new batteries in your smoke detector before you turn on the furnace for the year.Plan some regular outings with friends or sign up for a class, especially one involving indoor walking. There’s no need for us to stay huddled inside all winter!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I moved into a home in rural Vermont this summer and was rather terrified one morning when I walked out into my backyard and found myself face to face with a bear. I ran back in the house, and it trundled off into the woods. Later, my neighbors told me the bear is well-known in the area and that some residents, including my home’s former owner, used to feed it. What can I do to keep it out of my yard? — Jessica, via e-mailDEAR JESSICA: Bears can be a real nuisance — although in many places it’s human encroachment that exacerbates the problem — and when well-meaning humans feed them, they become more than a nuisance: They’re then a danger.Let the Vermont Fish & Wildlife office (http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/) near you know about the bear. Unlike some states and urban areas, the office may not be able to come out and capture or kill the bear, but they will give you advice on how to reduce the risk of another surprise visit.Meantime, follow these steps as well:
• Don’t leave garbage cans outdoors; store in a shed or garage and have a well-latched cover.
• Don’t place garbage on the curb the night before trash pickup.
• Feed your pets indoors.• After a barbecue, clean the grill well. Store inside
if possible.• If you have a bird feeder, empty it or take it inside
for at least four weeks.Keep in contact with your neighbors about the bear. If you or they continue to have problems, stay in contact with Vermont Fish & Wildlife. The USDA Animal Damage Control Unit is another resource (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/wildlife_damage/).

DOWN ON THE FARM (continued):Our “nest egg” is money saved for the future. An “egghead” is overly intellectual, and a person is seen as a “good egg” or a “bad egg.” If you’ve done something that made you look foolish, you have “egg on your face.” We’ve all “run around like a chicken with its head cut off,” “counted our chickens before they’re hatched,” and been advised not to “put all our eggs in one basket.” Many offices have a “pecking order,” and some men claim to have been “hen-pecked” by a “biddy.”
There are more chickens in the world than any other bird. That little red growth that hangs beneath a chicken’s beak is called a wattle. It’s red because it has a rich supply of blood.
A female chicken less than a year old is known as a pullet, while a very young male is a cockerel. When a cockerel is 8 to 12 weeks old and weighs 2 or 3 pounds, he is referred to as a broiler.
The average baby pig weighs in at about 2.5 pounds (.93 kg), doubling its weight during its first week of life. Adult males can reach about 500 pounds (186 kg), with sows at 450 (168 kg). Most hogs are off to market at about seven months old.
Let’s not waste anything! A pig’s fat, skin, hair and glands are all used in manufacturing and included in products such as soap, shaving cream, explosives, fertilizer, glue and medicine, including insulin.

sheep’s milk is much higher than that of cow’s milk. What’s for dinner? If you’re having moussaka,
you’re eating a dish of lamb and eggplant. Kibbe on the menu denotes ground lamb.
When a female horse and a male donkey mate, the result is a mule. An old proverb says: “Mules make a great fuss about their ancestors having been horses.”

ScammerS add to Bag of trickS
The scammers who want to separate us from our money never sleep. And they’ve gotten more creative than ever.Scammers are targeting those who make purchases on Amazon.com and are raking in millions of dollars. They send out a mass e-mail, complete with a duplicate of the Amazon logo, with a thanks for the most recent purchase. A variation is to send an e-mail saying that the Amazon.com account has been compromised. The purchaser is asked to click a link, which either downloads a virus or brings up a webpage that asks for login and credit-card information. Since so many people buy from Amazon.com, the scammers actually are hitting large numbers of purchasers. With personal information in hand, they go on a spending spree.Hotels are notorious for lack of security in their computers, and scammers are having a field day with it. It’s thought that hotel computers are the No. 1 location for credit-card scammers to attack. And it’s not just the mom-and-pop motels — the major chains are getting hit too. There’s not much that can be done, except to check your credit-card statements the minute you get them. There’s a movement afoot to have credit-card holders check their purchases and balances on a daily basis to stop the frauds faster. However, there is danger in that as well, especially if you use WiFi and check your account from an unprotected location. There must be money in online auto sales, because scammers have targeted that area, too. To accomplish the fraud, scammers create a website or e-mail address that is only one letter off from a legitimate site. All it would take is a small typo to put purchasers in contact with the scammers instead of the actual dealership. Purchasers would inquire about buying a vehicle, and the scammers would tell them how and where to wire the money…and of course, the vehicle is never delivered.Anytime there’s a disaster or storm, beware of phony solicitations. With the BP oil spill, it’s said that some creative scammers were even taking money to get clean-up jobs for people who applied. Hurricanes, deep snow, floods — they’re all perfect for the scammers who prey on our generous spirits.

farmer. If you’re eating your Christmas goose, most likely it’s of the Embden variety.
The delicacy pate de foie gras is made from the livers of geese. In Europe, geese are forced to eat more food than normal to produce a large, fatty liver. But don’t try it in America…This method of feeding is illegal in the States.
According to folklore, when sheep run back and forth, jump up and down, and fight as they frolic, it means a change of weather is on the way. Legend further maintains that if oxen are licking their forefeet, hens are taking dust baths, or frogs are croaking more than usual, rain is forthcoming. A chicken standing on one leg denotes impending cold weather.

Champ Jimmie LurksThe King is far from dead. The King lives. With apologies to Richard Petty,
Jimmie Johnson has been king of the Sprint Cup Series for four years and seems unlikely to abdicate the throne. Maybe Petty’s King with a capital K, and Johnson’s just king with a little one.The latest victory, his 53rd, was at Dover International Speedway, where Johnson has won three of the last four Cup races.“The tire that Goodyear brought back — it’s the same as it was in the spring -- blackened up the track in a hurry, but really made it challenging after 30 or 40 laps.…I had to fall back on my dirt-racing background.”For the record, Johnson’s “dirt-racing background” wasn’t at Eldora or Knoxville. It was through deserts. Johnson first made his reputation in off-road racing. At 35 years of age, Johnson, a native of El Cajon, Calif., has already won four Cup championships. Only two drivers, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, have ever won more. Neither ever won four in a row, an
unprecedented achievement. Now Johnson seems on track to make it five.Johnson isn’t boastful by nature, even though he has every right to be. He laughs easily but seldom jokes. Some find him boring off the track. But not on it. He opened the Chase with a 25th-place finish. Guess what? He opened it with a 39th in 2006 and went on to win the championship. His quick recovery at Dover was typical of past performances. He and crew chief Chad Knaus have forged a relationship that serves as a model for every other
such combination in the sport. For much of the AAA 400, A.J. Allmendinger dominated. Johnson bided his time and ended up rising to the front and staying there for the final stages.“We played it smart,” he said. “He (Allmendinger) wasn’t ‘a Chase guy,’ so I didn’t feel good about letting him go, but when he got to me and put pressure on me, I let him by.“Come the end of the race, he wasn’t there to have to fight with.”

DOWN ON THE FARM (continued):National Pork Month. For those non-meat lovers, October is also Vegetarian Awareness Month, and November is Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month.
Although we think of turkeys as gobblers, only the male toms actually gobble. The female hens make a clicking noise. A mature turkey will have about 3,500 feathers.
A horse’s teeth take up more space in its head than its brain. While a male horse will have 40 teeth, the female’s mouth contains only 36.
We generally mount a horse on its left side. This practice has been around since the days of ancient Greeks, when the soldiers carried their weapons on their left side, making it difficult to mount on the horse’s right side.
How fast are farm animals? The maximum speed a pig can run is about 11 miles per hour (18 km/hr), while a chicken struts along at 9 miles per hour (14/km/hr). A wild turkey can reach a ground speed of 25 miles per hour (40 km/hr) as well as fly for short distances up to 55 mph (89 km/hr). Compare these with the world’s fastest animal, the cheetah, whose speed is about 70 mph (113 km/hr).

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I hear that taking 10,000 steps a day is all that a person needs to stay healthy. Is this so? How much time does that take? Do you count all the steps you take in a day, or are these 10,000 steps in addition to what you normally take? — G.D.ANSWER: The 10,000-steps-a-day program originated in the Surgeon General’s office some years back. It’s been shown, more than once, that people who increase their total daily steps to 10,000 (counting the ones they normally take) have less body fat, lower blood sugar and lower blood pressure. There is more to staying fit than taking 10,000 leisurely steps. Strength building is also important.Ten thousand steps are approximately 5 miles (3.6 to 4.9 miles; 6 to 8 kilometers). How much time does this take? The walking should be brisk. That’s defined as taking 90 to 100 steps a minute. For the entire time involved, you can do the math. However, these steps don’t all have to be taken in one session. You can amass them throughout the day. A hundred steps a minute is a quick pace. You might not be up
to it. It’s OK to start more slowly and gradually work your way to the 100-steps-a-minute goal, and not all the 10,000 steps have to be such fast ones. The goal of 10,000 steps is another thing that can take you a while to reach. Don’t try to do all this on the first day. Start out by taking an extra 200 steps a day, and gradually work your way to 10,000 over a couple of months. You can’t count these steps without driving yourself crazy. You need a pedometer, a gadget that records your steps. Pedometers range in cost from $17 to $80. They can be worn on a belt, put in a pocket or worn around the leg. They register steps by the movement of the hips or the impact of the foot against the ground. If you want to be really healthy, you have to add some resistance exercise to your program. Resistance exercise is lifting weights. The booklet on fitness explains the benefits of walking and other aerobic exercise in clear language. OCTOBER FEaTuREd BusinEssFormerly from St. Louis, Takiya Smith,
owner of Beautique Lash & Brow has lived in Beaufort since 1996. She began her career in the beauty industry after obtaining her certification as a Permanent Makeup Professional earlier this year. She then received her certification as an Eyelash Extension and Eyebrow Threading Specialist and became a National Educator traveling throughout the U.S. to train and certify other beauty experts and cosmetologists. Ever since she was a child, Takiya’s had a passion and love for all things fashion, design and beauty. Seeing an opportunity to bring something new to this area, Takiya combined two things women love most — beauty and fashion, creating a beauty boutique that offers a select line of shoes, handbags and accessories. She then took it a unique step above, by offering and catering exclusively to the grooming and perfection of full, natural looking eyelashes and eyebrows.
Takiya’s clients are women from all ages, ethnicities and walks of life — mothers, daughters, professionals and entertainers. Men also come in for threading services for mustache/beard grooming. What has been most gratifying are the women who have opened up and shared their testimonies of overcoming cancer and have come to Beautique Lash & Brow for eyelash extensions or permanent make up to fill in eyebrows or eyelashes lost during chemotherapy. The joy and tears seen and shared in their feeling beautiful again has been nothing short of amazing and inspiring. Beautique Lash & Brow opened in Beaufort this past May and in Sept. opened a second location at Connie’s Creations in Bluffton.
As a single mother of two children, she lives everyday on purpose with a purpose. Having been blessed, Takiya teaches her children that the sky’s the limit. What’s in the near future for Beautique Lash & Brow? The sky’s the limit! Takiya sees franchise opportunities and many more boutiques opening along the East Coast.
