Tasmanian
Devils
The only Tasmanian
Devils left live on the Austra-
lian island state of Tasmania.
Since they are such inde-
pendent animals, they oc-
cupy home ranges. The aver-
age home range is 3,200
acres.
Habitat By: Riah VZ, 7th Grader Sources:
Food Tasmanian Devils hunt
for prey and look for dead
animals. They eat the dead
animals flesh. They often

Like many other animals,
the males fight for the fe-
males. However, from then
on, they guard them to
avoid unfaithfulness. The
females average four
breeding seasons in their
lifetime. The females, give
birth to about 20-30 live
young each time. In the
pouch, competition for
food is fierce and few
young survive. Those that
do survive are ejected
from the pouch after
about 100 days. They
young become independ-
ent after about 9 months.
Tasmanian Devils
Devil Tumour Facial
disease is a disease where
large tumours grow on the
face, especially near the
mouth. This affects the
devil’s feeding. The devils
die within a few months due
to starvation. Since 1996 the
Tasmanian devil population
has declined by anywhere
between 20% to 50% be-
cause of this disease. Cur-
rently, the scientists are re-
moving the sick devils from
their habitats to protect the
healthy devils from getting
the disease.
Miscellaneous Facts DTFD Mating and Young
A devil’s tail is about half it’s
body length.
The fatter the tail, the healthier
the devil is.
The devil is about the size of a
small dog.
The devil is characterized by its
chubby, solid, and muscular
build. Also, it’s black fur, strong
odor, it’s piercing and aggra-
vating screech, and it’s sense
of smell.
Devil’s have a scent gland at
the base of their tail that leaves
a trail of their strong odor be-
hind them.
Although Tasmanian Devils are
nocturnal, they still like to rest in
the sun.
