New Book review - Spanish fly by Will Ferguson (taken from www.reviewsofbooks.com)Spanish Fly begins in Paradise Flats, Texas during the Depression. Jack McGreary is an intelligent young man, smart enough to know that his father has been conned out of his money. Jack does small cons in town to raise money, and when a couple of professional grifters, called Virgil and Miss Rose, come to town, Jack is fascinated by them. He joins the two of them, learning all the cons and inventing new ones. He begins to doubt Virgil's and Miss Rose's stories about their past and increasingly comes to the realization that grifters rarely come to a happy end. His growing attraction to Miss Rose also puts him increasingly at odd with Virgil. Will Ferguson's novel has received mostly positive reviews with The Telegraph saying, "This is a terrific book, lyrical and hilarious, bleak and funny, with a love of history balanced against a rippingly clever plot."
