Save the DateFocus on reducing urban water leakageArticle written by Peter GutierrezCourtesy of European Commission/EUNoresourceismorefundamentaltolifeandhumansocietythanwater.Yet,globally,25to30percentofdrinkingwaterislosteveryyearduetoleakagesinurbanwaterdistributionsystems.TheEU-fundedprojectLEAKCURE(‘Interventionforcuringpipelineleakageinurbanwatermains’)isproposinganinnovativesolutionfortheautomaticdetection,sealingandcuringoftypicalnetworkpipes,withoutdigginguppavementsandroads.“Themajorityofnetworkwaterleaksarenoteasilydetectablebyconventionalmeans,”saysprojectcoordinatorPeterPazofIsrael’sCurapipeSystemLtd.“Traditionalfind-and-fixmethodsareinefficient,whileeliminatingseveralleaksallatoncebyreplacingentiremainsisexpensiveanddisruptive.”Waterstress,reflectingthebalancebetweenwatersupplyanddemand,isnowshowingupinareaswhereitwasnotgenerallyseenbefore,suchasintheUK,saysPaz.Atthesametime,waterstressisworseninginotherareas,includingpartsofSouthernEurope.Thisispartlyduetoclimatechangeandpartlyduetootherfactors,suchasincreasedurbanisationandindustrialisation.“Inthepast,”hesays,“pipelineleakagewasnotalwaysconsideredapriority.Now,withwaterstressontheriseandalackofreadilyavailablenewwatersupplies,leakagelevelsinEuropeandworldwidehavestartedtodrawmoreattention.”TheLEAKCUREsolution,dubbed‘Trenchless,AutomatedLeakageRepair’(TALR),involveslaunchingspecialdevicesknownas‘pigs’,linkedtogetherina‘pigtrain’.Apigisessentiallyaplug-likedevicethatcanbemadetomovethroughapipe,controlledviapressureandflow.Twopigslinkedtogethercanblockthewaterinfrontandbehind,whileleavingavoidinbetween.IntheLEAKCUREpig-train,thatvoidisfilledwithaspecialviscouscuringsubstance,whichtravelsdownthepipebetweenthepigs.“Thetrainmovesinacontinuousfashion,neverstationary,”Pazsays,“sealingleaksautomaticallyasthecuringsubstancecomesintocontactwithaleakatanyorientationwithinthepipe.Thesubstancehardensandtheleakispermanentlycuredasthetraincontinuesalongthepipe.”Pazsayscurrentrepairpracticeshavetendedtofocusondamagecontrol-keepingleakagefromincreasingratherthanactuallyreducingit.“Oursolutionisgearedtoreducingcurrentunacceptablelevelsofleakagebyasignificantamount,whichinEuropemeansclosetoathirdofthesuppliedwater.”TheLEAKCUREprojectistestingitsnewsystemintheUK,settinguplocalpartnershipsandfieldtrials.Followingthetrials,andoncethenecessaryadaptationsaremadetosuitlocalcontexts,theprojectwillexpanditsactivitiesbeyondtheUK.PazsaysCurapipewillmarkettheTALRservicetowaterutilitiesinpartnershipwithlocalpartnersalreadyactiveinwaterpipelinerepairandmaintenance.“Sofar,”hesays,“ourresultsindicatethatwecanrepairthekindsofleaksthatareresponsibleformostofthewaterloss.Wearetalkingaboutleakagesrangingfrom40to3000litresperhour.Extendingthat,ifwecantreat40kilometresofleakypipeline,wecouldpotentiallysave1.7millionlitresofpuredrinkingwatereveryday.”AccordingtotheUK’sWaterServicesRegulationAuthority(OFWAT),thebenefitsofwaterleakagereductionwillbesignificant,includingmoreusablewaterleftintheenvironmentforotherusers,

Wehaveagreatslateofofficers,asdoesWEAT,forthisupcomingyear.Wewillworktogethertocontinuethepastsuccessesinawardingscholarshipstocollegestudentswithinthelocalchapterfamilyaswellasstatewidescholarshiprecipients,helpinglocalandstatetappingteamsattendthenationalAWWAConvention,removingtrashfromatributaryoftheSanAntonioRiverthroughfourBasuraBashweekends,andjudgingScienceFair(s)andawardingwinnerswithcashprizes.OurtwochaptersalsocontributeourtimetoruntheWaterForPeopleGolfTournamentwhichraisedover$28,000inAugust–thiseventisthe#1fundraiserforWaterForPeopleinTexas.
Wealsohavemanyexcitingeventsinthenearfuture:
• WewillbehostingourAnnualScholarshipDinneronDecember5,2013attheSanFranciscoSteakhouse.Thiseventraisesmoneyforeachorganizationandhonorsournewlyawardedscholarshipwinners.AfewofficersandIattendedatastingofpotentialmenuitemsandthemealpromisestobeverytasty!
• ThereisanimportantelectioncominguponNovember5th.Proposition6,whichauthorizesaone-timeuseof$2billioninreservefundstohelpfundwaterprojectsthroughoutthestateofTexas,isontheballot.EarlyvotingfortheelectionisOctober21stthroughNovember1st,withtheactualElectionDayonNovember5th.
