the Life of an Artist

Past Master Taufeeq “Feeq” Muhammad, born Theodis Patrick Walker, 39, passed away Friday January 9, 2015 in Baton Rouge, LA. He was born March 29, 1975 in Decatur, IL to the late Khalilah Muhammad (Barbara Jean Owen) and Theodore Walker. Maternal grandparents Edna Owen and the late Robert Owen, Jr.

His development as an artist began at a young age. Having a natural talent for art, he would draw on old bill envelopes supplied by his mother to keep him busy. He attributes his growth as an artist to his late mother, Khalilah Muhammad, whom fostered his artistic abilities by enrolling him into art clubs, after school programs, drawing classes at a local college, and entering him into school and city art competitions. While graphite and pencil drawings were his main medium, at the age of 17 he produced his first painting and discovered his next path in life. After graduating from Lancaster High School in 1993, Taufeeq began his formal art education at Prairie View A&M University. He soon left to pursue his passion of painting through traveling exhibitions at festivals and conventions both locally and nationally. Taufeeq moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to study architecture and complete his art studies at Southern University, from which he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree. During this time he became a member of Jno G. Lewis Jr., Lodge #261 PHA Southern University and Pride of Baton Rouge Holy Royal Arch Masons Chapter #2.

As an artist, Taufeeq’s versatility showed through his acrylic painting in various styles such as cubism, abstract, realism, and impressionism. He continued to explore many techniques and styles in each of his paintings through use of sensational color combinations and bold textures to express the mood of his subject matters and cultural themes.

Taufeeq’s art has been exhibited in galleries, at festivals and conventions in Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, and Washington D.C. He lived in Baton Rouge, LA and regularly exhibited at galleries in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, LA.

Taufeeq leaves behind his fiance’ Taisha Phifer of Baton Rouge, LA. He leaves behind his son Sananda Muhammad of New Smyma Beach, FL. His siblings, Aqueelah Muhammad (Jerry Webb), Raja Muhammad, Thameenah Muhammad, Hadiyah Muhammad, all of Dallas, TX; and step brother Yusuf Muhammad (Emily). Grandmother Edna Owen and Aunts Alice Smith (Johnny), Marie Stagger (Robert), John Owen of Decatur, IL.

He was proceeded in death by his Mother, Khalilah Muhammad; older brother, Ali Muhammad; Aunts, Edna Mae Dewalt & Carolyn Owen; and Cousin, Pamela White.

He leaves to cherish his memory, nieces, Whitnee’ Muhammad and London Muhammad; nephews, D’Vonte Muhammad, Corey Perry, Naji Muhammad, & Jerrell Webb all of Dallas, TX. Cousins Paula Ingram, Alicia Blue, Ebony MacIntosh, & Larry Bond of Decatur, IL.
