THE Indian carmaker that shockedthe auto industry with the cheapest

car in the world has done it again.The Tata Motors group used the New

Delhi Auto Expo to unveil its newest low-cost car — the Magic Iris.

Like the Nano, which created aglobal stir when it was revealed lastyear, the quirky five-passenger van isclearly designed aimed at the millions ofIndians who presently ride bikes andrickshaws.

At less than $US2000 ($A2240), it willhit Indian showrooms later this year.

Tata said the car ‘‘offered safer andmore comfortable mobiilty for thosewho depend on three-wheelers’’.

The Magic Iris is powered by a 611ccdiesel engine that delivers a top speedof 55km/h and a 10-litre fuel tank.

The car’s roll-out follows the Nanopickup, which is expected to arrive laterthis year.

Following the same principle as theNano car, the pickup has a 350cc three-cylinder engine, single windscreenwiper, three-wheel lugs to save cost and

weight, a short wheelbase and roomy

interior.

The pickup has a half-tonne payload,

a metal roof and fabric side rear

windows.

The arrival of the Magic Iris comes as

Tata prepares to enter one of the

toughest markets in the world — NorthAmerica.

Tata Group chairman Rata Tata saidthe company would start selling itsNano there within three years.

The Nano was shown at the NorthAmerican International Motor Show inDetroit.

Tata’s US-based Tata Technologiesplayed a key role in engineering theNano and help secure 18 patents on thecar’s design and engineering.

Tata Technologies president andCEO Warren Harris said the companywas ‘‘front-and-centre’’ in engineeringand developing the Nano.

‘‘We worked closely with Tata Motorsand with a significant number of theNano project suppliers,’’ Harris said.

The model on display in Detroit is onloan from Tata’s advanced engineeringand design centre in Pune, India.
