SPECIAL FEATURES

Passenger airbag (PAB) switch:

If it becomes necessary to fit a childrestraint on the front passenger seat, the airbag must be de-activated usingthe switch located on the left side of thedashboard. This switch can be accessedonce codriver side door is opened. On the contrary, when an adult is seatedin the front passenger seat, ensure thatPAB disabling switch is turned to ‘ON’position. This will ensure that thepassenger airbag is operational in theevent of a collission. This switch is operated using the ignition/ remote key.

AIRBAG (SRS)

WARNING• The airbag is a supplementary

restraint system that providesADDITIONAL protection in a severecollision only. It does NOT replacethe need to wear a seat belt.Relying on the airbags alone couldlead to severe injuries in a collision. The airbags work with your seat beltto restrain you properly. Alwayswear your seat belts even thoughyou have airbags.

• To ensure correct deployment ofthe airbags, it is essential thatobstructions are not allowed tointervene between airbag and theoccupant. Do not put anything onor around the front airbag coversor attempt to open them. You maydamage the airbags and you couldbe injured because the airbags areno longer functional. Theseprotective covers for the airbagcushions are designed to open onlywhen the airbags are inflating.

• Seating position plays an importantrole in minimizing the risk ofaccidental injury. In addition toproperly worn seat belts, both driverand front passenger should adjusttheir seat to provide the maximumpractical distance from the frontairbags. Airbags need room toinflate. Being too close to thesteering wheel or dashboard duringairbag deployment could causeserious injury.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Airbag SRS system components:

The airbag ‘SRS’ system consists of thefollowing:

• Airbag ‘SRS’ ECU (Electronic ControlUnit)

• ‘SRS’ Indicator• Driver Airbag• Front Passenger Airbag• Front Impact Sensors• Driver and Front Passenger Seat Belt

Pretensioners with load limiters• Supplemental Front Seat-Mounted

Side Airbags• Side Remote Acceleration Sensors• Electrical Wiring Harness

Airbag ‘SRS’ working:

In the event of a collision, airbag SRSECU monitors the rate of decelerationinduced by the collision, through impactsensors, to determine whether theairbags should be deployed.

AIRBAG (SRS)

NOTEThe airbag ‘SRS’ is not designed tooperate as a result of roll - over, rearcollisions, minor frontal or sideimpacts nor will it operate as a resultof heavy braking or driving overbumps and pot holes.

Airbag inflation is virtually instantaneousand occurs with considerable force, accompanied by loud noise. The inflatedairbag, together with seat belts restraintsystem, limit the movement of anoccupant, thereby reducing the risk ofinjury.

When an airbag inflates, you may seesome smoke-like particles. The particlesare a normal by-product of the processthat generates the nontoxic gas usedfor airbag inflation. These airborneparticles may irritate the skin, eyes, nose, or throat. If you have skin or eyeirritation, rinse the area with cool water. For nose or throat irritation, move tofresh air. If the irritation continues, see

your doctor. Also sometimes the smokecan cause breathing problems forpeople with a history of asthma or otherbreathing trouble. In such cases getfresh air promptly.

After inflation airbags deflateimmediately thus providing a gradualcushioning effect for the occupant. It isnot advisable to drive your vehicle afterthe airbags have been deployed. If youare involved in another collision, theairbags will not be in place to protectyou.

WARNINGAfter inflation, some airbagcomponents are hot. DO NOT touchthem.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) (ifequipped):In addition to the conventional hydraulicbrake system, an Anti-lock BrakingSystem (ABS) incorporating ElectronicBrake Distribution (EBD) is provided onTata Aria (ABS version).During normal braking the ElectronicBrake Distribution (EBD) limits the levelof braking force transmitted to the rearwheels. ‘EBD’ moderates the brakingforces at the rear axle depending uponthe load condition and available tractionat the rear wheels.During emergency braking the Anti-lockBraking System (ABS) regulates thebraking force for each individual wheel. In doing so the system optimizes thelevel of braking being achieved whilemaintaining a stable, controllablevehicle. Where ‘EBD’ only acts on therear wheels the ABS is able to controleach wheel individually. Both the ‘EBD’and the ‘ABS’ functions work bycontinuously monitoring and comparing

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)

the four individual wheel speeds andreacts when a wheel is detected asloosing traction with the road surface, which happens when a wheel tends tolock during braking. To avoid the wheels from locking andprevent the vehicle from skidding ABSis provided. It prevents the wheels fromlocking and maintains the steerability ofthe vehicle thereby helping the driver tomaintain stability of the vehicle whilebringing it to a stop in the safest possibleway.

NOTEDurning Cranking ABS, EBDwarning lamps might glow for a fewseconds. In order to obtain the maximum benefitfrom your ‘ABS’ system in anemergency situation, do not attemptto modulate the brake pressure bypumping the brake pedal. Pressbrake pedal continuously as hard aspossible or as the situation demands. When ABS intervention is necessary

the warning lamp will not illuminatebut the driver will feel the brake pedalpulsating and may hear an audiblesound from the modulator indicatingthat ABS control is taking place.

ABS and EBDWarning Lights:The ABS and EBD warning lamps willilluminate for a system check forapproximately 3 seconds, when theignition is switched ‘ON’. Fuel economy :

Your vehicle’s fuel economy dependsmainly on your style of driving, whereyou drive and when you drive.

Each of these factors affects how manykilometers you can get from a litre offuel. To operate your vehicle aseconomically as possible, the drivingsuggestions below will be useful.

• Do not warm up your vehicle’s enginefor a long time. Start driving once theengine is running smoothly. Enginewarm up may take a little more timeon colder days.

• Gently press the accelerator pedalafter stopping

• Get your vehicle serviced as per theService Schedule. This not onlyincreases the life of all parts but alsolowers your operating costs.

• Avoid using the Air Conditionerunnecessarily

• Lower your vehicle’s speed whendriving on rough roads.

• Keep the tyres inflated to theirrecommended pressure. This alsohelps in better tyre life and fueleconomy.

• Maintain a safe distance from othervehicle’s to avoid sudden stops. Thiswill reduce wear on brake linings andpads. Driving in such a way will alsosave fuel because extra fuel isrequired to accelerate back to drivingspeed.

• Do not carry unnecessary weight inyour vehicle.

• Do not rest your foot on the brake andclutch pedal while driving. This causesbrakes and clutch to wear out faster.Your car ’s fuel economy is alsoaffected.

• Improperly aligned wheels result isuneven tread wear and poor fueleconomy. Check your car’s wheelalignment regularly.

• As far as possible roll up your vehicle’swindows when traveling at highspeeds. This improves the fueleconomy of your car.

• Reduce your vehicle’s speed when thewind is blowing against the directionin which your car is going.

BRAKES & BRAKING

Check your brakes after driving throughdeep water. Apply the brakesmoderately to feel that they are normal. If not, apply them gently and frequentlyuntil they do. With wet brakes you shouldbe extra cautious and alert while driving.

CAUTIONBrake system failure is hazardousand needs immediate attention. In theevent of brake system failure,a) Have your vehicle towed ORb) Be extremely cautious in case youhave to drive the car.

Brakes :

The brake system on your vehicle is anadvanced dual circuit, vertical splitvacuum assisted hydraulic brakesystem.

It is equipped with:

Brake booster: This assists the driverin braking with an ergonomic pedalforce on brake pedal;Tandem Master Cylinder, for fail safebraking.Twin pot calipers in front and singlepot callipers in rear, for efficientenergy absorption.

However, in failure of one circuit, thepedal will be lighter to press, pedal travelwill be higher and stopping distance willincrease. At the same time brakeindication light would glow on dashboard.

If you observe any abnormality in brakesystem, contact your nearest TATAAuthorized Service Centre. In case offailure of vacuum supply to the brakebooster the car can still be

stopped with a higher pedal effort. Incase of vacuum failure or brake circuitfailure, slow down the vehicle by shiftingto lower gear and lifting your foot fromthe accelerator pedal. Pull to the sideof the road as soon as it is safe. Putyour foot on brake pedal to apply brake.Do not ride with brakes applied as theymay overheat and the performance maybe impaired. The brake lights mayconfuse the other road users behindyou. Use engine to assist the brakes byshifting to a lower gear and lifting yourfoot from accelerator pedal.

Constant application of brakes whilegoing down the hill builds heat andreduces braking efficiency.

• Never move the vehicle diagonallyacross a hill. The danger is in loss oftraction and sideways slippage, possibly resulting in tipping over. Ifunavoidable, choose as mild anangle as possible and keep the carmoving.

• If the wheels start to slip within fewfeet of the end of the climb, motioncan be maintained by swinging thesteered wheels left and right, therebyproviding increased grip.

• If the vehicle stalls or lossesheadway while climbing a steep hill,

make a quick shift to reverse andallow the car to move back with thecontrol of engine compression.

Descending Sharp Gradients :

• Depending on the severity of thegradient, shift into appropriate gear.Use engine braking judiciouslywithout over-revving the engine.

• Brake application under suchsituations should be done verysmoothly to avoid loss of control.Select appropriate gear so that gearchanging or clutch disengagement isnot involved while descending thegradient.

Warm up the engine to normal operatingtemperature.

Turn it off and wait for at least 30 minutesfor the oil to return to the oil pan.

Be sure the vehicle is on a level surface.

Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, andreinsert if fully.

Pull it out again and examine the oil level.it should be between ‘Min’ and ‘Max’level. If not, top up with recommendedengine oil.

Air Filter:

Replace the air filter element with a newone when air filter gets too clogged . Thisis necessary if the vehicle is driven industy conditions.Always use a genuine air filterelement.

NOTE1. When a vehicle is driven under dusty

conditions, replacement of the air-cleaner element is necessary.

2. Clogged air-cleaners lead toincreased resistance to air intakewhich increases fuel consumption.Using low pressure compressed air, blow off dust on the air cleanerelement.

Engine coolant level:

Check the coolant level in the radiatorauxiliary tank.

It should be in between maximum andminimum lines.

If the auxiliary tank is completely empty, please check the coolant level.

TURBOCHARGER & INTERCOOLER

Turbocharger:Your vehicle is fitted with a turbocharger. This is an efficient supercharging deviceused in the engine. It makes use ofthermal energy of engine exhaust gasesto run a turbine which in turn drives acompressor to force air under pressureinto the inlet manifold.Lubrication of Turbocharger:The turbocharger rotor assembly issupported by two fully floating bearingbushes in the bearing housing. Thesebearing bushes are lubricated with finelyfiltered engine oil from the lubricationsystem of the engine.Idle the engine for a while (one minute)after starting the engine and beforestopping the engine to ensure adequatelubricating oil supply to the turbocharger.Turbocharger Connections:All turbocharger connections must beleak-proof. Check air inlet, air outlet, exhaust gas inlet and exhaust outletconnections as well as oil inlet and outlet

connections and tighten the connectionswhere required.Proper maintenance of air filter, oil filteras well as use of correct grade of oil andadherence to oil change intervals isessential for proper functioning of theturbocharger. If you suspect any malfunctioning of theturbocharger, take the vehicle to thenearest dealer.

NOTEKeep engine at idling speed for atleasta minute after starting and also beforestopping, to protect the turbochargeragainst damage due to oil starvation.

Intercooler :Hot air coming out of turbocharger flowsthrough the intercooler and gets cooledbefore entering the intake manifold. As such it does not require anymaintenance however it can be cleanedexternally by blowing compressed air.

CAUTIONWhile cleaning, ensure thatintercooler fins are not damaged. If thefins get damaged, it could lead to loseof performance and subsequentfailure.

Maintenance recommendations:a) Check the boost pressure pipe for

its proper fitment, damage etc.b) Specified engine oil and the oil filter

should be used and should bechanged regularly in accordancewith Service Schedule.

c) Check oil feed pipes, return pipes, air intake and exhaust piping forleakages and restrictions.

d) Check the engine breathing systemand oil seperator.

e) Fill the oil inlet hole of theturbocharger with clean engine oil, when the engine is started after longstorage.

NOTEIn cold condition, first 2 sec. engineshould not run up to full throttle.

Catalytic Converter :The catalytic converter is fitted on yourcar to reduce exhaust pollution. Thecatalytic converter will quickly heat upafter starting to ensure that it operatescorrectly during the warm up phase ofthe engine.

The catalytic Converter does not requireany special maintenance however, following precaution should be taken forthe effective functioning of the converterand to avoid damage to the Converter.

1 It is mandatory to use Diesel fuelwith low sulphur content (Referrecommended fuels). Use of anyother diesel fuel can increase thepollutants.

2 Avoid parking the vehicle overinflammable materials, such as dryleaves, grass, etc., as the exhaustsystem is hot enough to initiate“FIRE”.

Maintenance of Catalytic Converter

Catalytic Converter should be flushed bygiving full throttle (4 to 5 times) in standingcondition of vehicle on daily basis. Forhigh speed driving condition run hot forfew km as this will help to flush thecarbon soot deposits from exhaustsystem and catalytic converter. Highspeed running of the vehicle may bedone periodically to avoid chocking ofcatalytic converter.

Alternatively flushing operation forcleaning the catalytic converter can bedone by dry compressed air draft (3 to4 bar) directed on the honeycombstructure of catalytic converter (afterremoving from vehicle)

CAUTION• Avoid push start or tow-starting the

vehicle. (Use jump leads).• Avoid long (not more than 10 sec.)

repeat (not more than 3 times)starting of the Vehicle. Investigatethe cause for difficulty in starting &rectify the same.

• Avoid long idling (to warm-up). Ifthe engine is running rough, aftera cold start.

• Avoid switching "off" the ignitionwhen driving down the hill. (This willnot save fuel).

• Avoid fuel tank getting almost empty.• Avoid pre-Coating / Painting of

TYRES

Tyres:

1. Under inflation Excessive SideTread Wear

2. Correct Tyre UniformPressure Tyre Wear

3. Over inflation ExcessiveCentre Tread

Wear

Check for inflation and condition of yourcar tyres periodically.

Inflation:

Check the pressure in the tyres whenthey are cold.

You should have your own tyre pressuregauge and use it at all times. This makesit easier for you to tell if pressure loss iscaused by a tyre problem and not byvariation between gauges.

Keeping the tyres properly inflated givesyou the best combination of ridingcomfort, handling, tyre life and better fuelefficiency.

Over inflation of tyres makes the car ridebumpy and harsh. Tyres are more proneto uneven wear and damage from roadhazards.

Under inflated tyres reduce your comfortin vehicle handling and are prone tofailures due to high temperature. Theyalso cause uneven wear and more fuelconsumption.

Recommended Tyre Pressures

CAUTIONEvery time you check inflationpressure, you should also examinetyres for damage, trapping of foreignobjects in the treads and wear.

NOTETyre pressure should be checked in"cold" condition. Hot tyres tend toshow a slightly higher value. This isnormal.Same make tyres are to be used onthe vehicle with same size / aspectratio.

CAUTION1.If you notice bumps or bulges in

the tread or the side of the tyre, replace the tyre.

2.If there are cuts, splits or cracks inthe side of the tyre, replace thetyre.

Special care for tubeless tyres :

1. While removing tyre from wheel rimand mounting it back on wheel rim, take precautions not to damage tyrebead. Use tyre removal andassembly machines. Damage or cuton tyre bead may cause gradual lossof air and deflation of tyre.

2. Do not scratch inside of tubeless tyrewith metallic or sharp object.Tubeless tyres are coated withimpermeable layer of rubber frominside which holds the air inside thetyre. Removal of this layer due toscratching may cause gradual lossof air and deflation.

3. If wheel rim gets damaged in service, get the wheel rim repaired/replacedimmediately. Running the car withdamaged rim may cause deflation oftyre and subsequent dislodging of tyrefrom rim.

4. Maintain recommended inflationpressure. Over-inflation, in particular, may cause puncture or bursting oftyre.

NOTELife and wear pattern of tyres de-pends on various parameters like tyrepressure, wheel alignment, wheelbalancing, tyre rotation, etc. It alsolargely depends on vehicle speed, load carried, usage, driving habits, road conditions, tyre quality, etc. Incase fault is suspected to be due topoor quality of tyres, the same maybe taken up with concerned tyremanufacturer.

A sticker for tyre pressure values isfixed near door bottom hinge.

Repairing a Tyre:

Mark the tyre position suitably (if originalcolour dot mark is not visible) withrespect to valve stem hole to ensure thatthe tyre is refitted in the original locationon the wheel rim.

Ensure that balancing weights are notdisturbed during removal of tyres.

Check the balance weight prior to theremoval of the tyre. If found loose, markits location on the rim and refit properly.

Balance the wheel after everydismantling and assembly of tyre on thewheel rim.

Incorrect wheel alignment causesexcessive and uneven tyre wear. Checkwheel alignment at specified intervals.Wheel alignment values are given below:

TYRE ROTATION, WHEEL ALIGNMENT & WHEEL BALANCING

Front RearCaster 3° + 30’ -Camber 0°+ 30’ -Toe Out - -Toe In 2 - 5 mm -

Check and maintain tyre pressureperiodically to obtain longer tyre life.

Wheel Balancing :

Wheels of your vehicle are balancedfor better ride comfort and longer tyrelife. Balancing needs to be donewhenever tyre is removed from rim.

RADIAL TUBELESS TYRE :Radial tubeless tyres have followingadvantages over conventional tube tyres:• Lesser heat generation.• Improves dynamic stability.• Lower rolling resistance and lesser

weight, which improves fuelefficiency.

• Better safety

Special care for tubeless tyres :• Tubeless tyres are coated with

impermeable layer of rubber frominside which holds the air inside thetyre. Do not scratch inside oftubeless tyre with metallic or sharpobject. This may cause gradual lossof air.

• If wheel rim gets damaged in theservice, get the wheel rim repaired/replaced immediately. Running thevehicle with damaged rim may causedeflation of tyre and subsequentdislodging of tyre from rim.

• Maintain recommended tyrepressure. Over inflated tyre maycause puncture or bursting of tyre.

NOTELife and wear pattern of tyres dependson various parameters like tyrepressure, wheel alignment, wheelbalancing, tyre rotation, etc. It alsolargely depends on vehicle speed, loadcarried, usage, driving habits, roadconditions, etc.
