“Heart Matters: Service” Matthew 20:20-28 - Walter Cantwell -

- by Walter Cantwell Associate Pastor, Belin Memorial United Methodist Church

Last weekend, Christiana and I attended a wedding just outside of Asheville where we were greeted with a chill in the air. The heat of summer has finally given way to autumn’s cool breezes. I bundled up and went for a hike just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Thanksgiving kept running through my mind as I hiked under the magnificent red, orange, and yellow canopy of autumn. We have so much to be thankful for, especially thankful for our life in Christ Jesus.

Jesus taught, “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son” (Matthew 22:2, NIV).

At the wedding we danced, laughed, and enjoyed good food. But more importantly, we were with God, celebrating the joys of life. Heaven, here on earth and in the world to come, is best described as a feast enjoyed by all who come to God’s table.

During this season of feasts, Belin Memorial is offering two such banquets. We will gather as a church family on November 5th for our annual BBQ and Fall Festival (see info on page 6). All proceeds from this community event go directly to Belin’s Outreach Team, which helps families in

critical situations here in our community. Belin Memorial has hosted this popular feast since 1965, and there have been countless families who have benefited from our BBQ event. Belin Memorial helps families in our community almost every week.

Then, on November 20th, we will gather with our neighbors. Our newest mission, Feeding the Inlet, will seek to be a place where those in our community are nourished both physically and spiritually. Our first Feeding the Inlet will be held offsite. At this event, we will invite our neighbors to

Belin Memorial for a meal on December 19th.

We will continue hosting a monthly meal for the homeless and the hungry throughout

2017. In the coming weeks, the staff will be asking you to help cook, bake, serve, and gather around the table with our neighbors. Lunch will be served from 11 AM to 12:30 PM on these dates: December 19, January 23, February 27, and March 27.

We are grateful for the tables and feasts Christ is setting. May we celebrate and taste the kingdom of God.

In years past we have done Brown Bag Sunday when we ask everyone to bring in canned goods to feed the hungry in our community. Belin now provides green "Sack Hunger" bags for this purpose year-round. Since hunger is a daily issue to many of those around us, we want everyone to get in the habit of bringing food for those in need throughout the year... not just once a year. Grab a green bag (in FLC and sanctuary entrances) and fill it with non-perishable food that will be donated to Belin’s Backpack Mission, South Strand Helping Hand, and the Church of God Food Bank. Thank you for joining with us as we share God's love with others year-round!

Belin Youth Ministry is partnering with the Belin Sunday School Class to host the 8th Annual Thanksgiving Feast for Tara Hall Home for Boys on Sunday, November 13! Please arrive at the Family Life Center at 5:30 PM, and remember to bring $1 for the meal! 100% of the money collected that Sunday will go to support Tara Hall's ministry! Youth Group will end at 8 PM.

ONE Initiative and Commitment Sunday

- by Mike Alexander, Senior Pastor

Some folks at Belin Memorial have been restless during our ONE INITIATIVE. I understand. Nobody likes to talk about money. Nobody really appreciates being squeezed to give more. It just makes us restless. But I can tell you that this was not the Stewardship Team’s intent.

St. Augustine declared in the 5th century, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in God.” For me, our ONE INITIATIVE has enabled me to draw closer to God, to think about how blessed I am, and to think of how I can bless those who come after me.

Commitment Sunday, November 13, at Belin Memorial United Methodist, is an opportunity for us to be drawn closer to God. I want to thank many of you for trusting the process, for supporting our ONE INITIATIVE. I am grateful to those of you who have been willing to embrace something new and different. I could tell that some of you have been uncomfortable. However, I have heard so many favorable comments from many new members of Belin Memorial.

Perhaps some people just never understand the rationale for our doing this generosity focus, but I am absolutely convinced that the ONE INITIATIVE will grow a new generation of leaders, people who are committed to Jesus Christ. This has not been a performance, but it has been an opportunity for us to open our hearts and minds to God as God calls us into being one church, with one vision, marching together toward the future.

Now you be in prayer as you make some important decisions about what you might be able to do for Belin Memorial and God’s Kingdom on November 13. And then . . . we’ll all get on with being the Church!

Decorate for Christmas Help the Worship Team decorate the Harbor and sanctuary for Christmas:

Friday, November 25, 9:30 AM

If you can offer a couple hours, we need about 20 people to sign up. Contact Jane Bowers at 843.655.3064 or [email protected]. It’s a good time to come together to transform our worship spaces as we anticipate the birth of our dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
