Much, much gratitude...

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

- John F Kennedy

We hope that each and every one of you enjoyed a wondrous and wonderful holiday season surrounded by loving friends, family and an abundance of delicious food! We certainly did and came away with a deep sense of gratitude for all our blessings in the cur-rent state of affairs the world finds itself in.

Food shortages and food riots worldwide are rising and it brings these issues to focus. The topic of food security is an important one, worthy of our attention. We, at Taste Of Timmins, would like to make note of it and work with you, the community, to continue helping to make our city and surrounding areas food secure. And because of you, we have seen much progress in the last year. We hope this trend continues in 2012!

Because of you the idea of an Urban Park Downtown Farmer’s Market became a reality which will continue to thrive & flourish with your support...

Because of you the Mountjoy Farmer’s Market did really well this past summer & attracted new farmers from the surrounding area, thereby providing more fresh & local produce to the community...

Because of you, local farms like Hawk Feather Farm started their first CSA at the community’s behest, Mother Cluckers expanded their flock to meet customer de-mand, Naturally Pure Farm opened their first farmgate market, Dream Acres Farm bought & rescued more Alpacas to increase their wool supply, B&G’s Goats & Bees had a breakout season and Mattagami Heights Farm sold out all their shares at each market!

Because of you local grocery stores stood up to take notice of the demand for sustainably grown foods and have responded. Your Independent Grocer expand-ed their organic processed and produce sections at the beginning of 2011 which now also include organic chicken. And now Metro also carries a broader selection of organic fruits and vegetables because YOU asked for it!

Because of you local stores like Plouffe’s Health Food Centre continue to exist- sup-plying organic products; and Bio Restoration’s continues to thrive, supplying re-gional organic produce and meats! Your support is invaluable to these small local businesses...

Because of you, organizations like the Anti-Hunger Coaltion Timmins have suc-ceeded in expanding their Good Food Box program which helps put affordable fresh fruits and vegetables within everyone’s reach. The Timmins Community Gardens was, once again, a tremendous success- demonstrating the city’s interest and passion for this important program.

Because of you Timmins and surrounding areas are seeing a food revolution like never before. And this revolution is not one happening just at your local farm or store, but also in your gardens and kitchens! Cooking is coming back in a big way and has never been so much fun!

Because of you the next generation will be raised on healthy and delicious home cooked whole foods. And they will go forth with the knowledge of how to plant a seed, nurture it, harvest it and prepare it into a delectable meal that will sustain their life.

There is much to be grateful for. On behalf of all the local farmers, business owners and community activists, we thank you for all your support and for

helping make our community more food secure! Happy 2012~
