Ministers MessageIt gives me great pleasure to warmly welcome you to the 2015 Tasmanian Heritage Festival and invite you to explore what the programme has to offer you, your family and friends.

We live in a unique island State that has many places and precincts of natural, cultural and built heritage value. The Heritage Festival is a great way for Tasmanians and visitors to take the opportunity to explore our hidden gems, to share and hear stories of the places that are important to them and to gain a better understanding of Tasmanias intriguing past.

With each and every experience of Tasmanias rich heritage, I continue to be amazed by the opportunities that we have to connect with people who are passionate about our past, who have helped to restore properties and who dedicate their time to sharing their insight into Tasmanias unique places and stories.

One of the great things about the Heritage Festival is the way in which it draws in so many volunteers, private individuals, organisations, businesses and areas of Government, all pulling together to deliver such an interesting, informative and enjoyable series of events, activities, talks and displays.

The Tasmanian Government is proudly supporting the National Trust to coordinate and deliver the Heritage Festival on behalf of the Tasmanian community and the heritage sector. This festival is a huge commitment and the many people involved are to be congratulated for putting together such a fascinating programme.

This years programme is filled with initiatives that will appeal, interest and entice, so I encourage you to take some time out to savour and explore our heritage this May.

Message from National Trust Patron, Her Excellency Professor, The Honourable Kate Warner AM, Governor of Tasmania

As Patron of the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) I am very pleased to write this message supporting the National Trust 2015 Heritage Festival. There will be no less than 280 events across Tasmania during May, reflecting on the theme Conflict & Compassion. This theme encompasses much in our history, from Aboriginal-settler relations to Australias participation in World War l.

Heritage is a broad yet wonderfully engaging measure of a societys past and in this Centenary year of ANZAC the Festival now in its 35th year fittingly examines the human side of war, rebellion, sacrifice and endurance, and the innumerable stories of courage and compassion that come from the horror of conflict and strife.

In Tasmania this is the premier heritage event in 2015 and, as you will see from the program, there are hundreds of outstanding events that will take place right across the island. These include panel discussions, exhibitions in heritage sites, celebrations of soldiers homecomings, music, lighting up significant and historical buildings with local heroes, and a series of memorial garden installations of over 5,000 knitted and crocheted poppies, representing those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War. An evening with Dan Mori, the lawyer to David Hicks, former detainee at Guantanamo Bay, will be a highlight of this years Festival.

This Festival, as in previous years, will richly inspire communities and groups to embrace and explore the States history, with our built heritage bringing to life the many engrossing stories that make up Tasmanias past.

I would like to acknowledge the role the Trust plays in working with communities, individuals, educational institutions and the business and government sectors to ensure that Tasmanias heritage is preserved for future generations and is presented in a relevant and engaging manner

I congratulate the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) and the Heritage Festival Working Group for their hard work and creativity. This years festival theme of Conflict & Compassion explores the human side of war, rebellion, sacrifice and endurance, and the extraordinary stories of courage and compassion that come from the horror of conflict and strife.

In this very special Festival event, Tasmanians will have the chance to hear directly from Major Michael (Dan) Mori, the US Marine Corps counsel whose role was to defend David Hicks when he was incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay for terrorism.

For four years, Dan Mori fought for Hickss right to go home, becoming alarmed with the way the US and Australian governments were handling the case.

Brian Wightman, former Minister for Justice and Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, will explore the case and its effects on Dan Mori - who now lives in Australia - in an up-close interview. In Brians own words:

In preparation for my discussion with Michael (Dan) Mori I read his autobiography, In The Company of Cowards twice.

Like many Australians, I again arrived at the obvious question, what the hell was David Hicks doing in Afghanistan? This common query was in part addressed by Liberal frontbencher, Bruce Billson, who recently stated: He certainly wasnt at a scout jamboree.

And after delving far below my gut reaction, my thoughts turned to Dan and I studied his words carefully. This led me to develop a significant appreciation and understanding of the rule of law and the separation of powers, couched by Dan in powerful imagery of terrorism, war, torture, conflict and politics. It was my kind of book.

I hope to learn much more

A silent auction with fabulous prizes will complete the occasion, with all proceeds going towards the conservation and maintenance of National Trust properties across Tasmania.

Roseneath Hospital For Wounded Returned Soldiers

WWI began in 1914 but by a few months into 1915 it was realised that existing Tasmanian hospitals were not going to cope with the growing number of casualties returning from the Front. The opening of a hospital at Austins Ferry was believed to provide part of the answer. Roseneath Hospital, operated by the Red Cross, was opened in August 1915 and operated until March 1919. Though official records have long been lost, newspapers of the time tell about the hospital, its staff and some of the hundreds of wounded returned soldier patients. Although Roseneath House, the site of the hospital, was destroyed in the bushfires of 1967, visitors to nearby Historic Austins Cottage (C.1813) can learn the history of Roseneath Hospital and the story of some of its patients through photographic and documented displays.

The Suspense Is Awful: Tasmania And The Great War

TMAG as the State museum will host an exhibition to commemorate the role Tasmanians played in World War 1 and explore the impact war had on their families back at home, by examining themes such as grief, remembrance, contributions to the war effort, conscription and legacy. Drawing from the museums multi-disciplinary collections, the exhibition will highlight stories previously untold including those of Tasmanian Aboriginal servicemen and of the men and women who provided medical support on the front line.

This exhibition looks at the extraordinary back-stories of some of the characters who populated Oatlands in the mid nineteenth century, and the choices they made when it came to decorating their homes. Thanks to Southern Midlands Councils growing collection of historic wallpaper samples discovered in local houses and public buildings, it is now possible to match wallpaper fragments to the people who originally chose them, and the results are often surprising. Why, for example, did two Oatlands ex-convicts (a cattle thief and an ex-prostitute) chose a vivid landscape wallpaper for their tiny two-roomed cottage? Why did a transported Scottish barmaid choose a wallpaper printed in real gold? (The answer may surprise you). And what was Supreme

Court Judge Algernon Montagu looking at when he sentenced Thomas Marshall to be hanged, dissected and anatomised?

For Love And Land:Conflict And Compassion in the Tasmanian Landscape

The West Tamar Arts Group, supported by the National Trust of Tasmania, presents an unforgettable and powerful journey into the visual and performing arts. The opening of the exhibition, curated by Jess Dorloff, will be celebrated by a Winter Festival. The setting, Clarendon, is a reminder of the way in which colonisation changed the identity of our islands landscape. The exhibition looks at colonisation to now and how this has influenced the connection to the island of Tasmania.

The multilayered cultural feast will be set in the heritage coach house and stables surrounding the Clarendon Green. The Winter Festival will take you on a journey into the landscape to experience a complete arts experience including working artists stalls, fashions and music from WWI onwards, childrens entertainment, moving sculptures, food, wine and whisky to warm your soul, while the art exhibition will challenge your view of Conflict and Compassion.

CONFLICT AND CONSEQUENCES

A PLAY & A DISPLAYIt is the end of 1853 and Doctor John Meyer is the Medical Superintendent of the Asylum at New Norfolk. He has been working there about ten years in the most interesting times. He resides at Frascati and tragically loses four children in close succession. He then sets his sights on improving conditions for the wounded of the Crimean war. The play is set around his farewell garden party before he heads overseas.

Find The Poppies& Remember the Fallen

This major community project commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing with a series of commemorative poppy installations in the grounds and buildings of

National Trust properties, shop windows and schools.

In the spring of 1915, scarlet poppies flowered on the barren WWI battlefields of Belgium, Gallipoli and France. Since

then, the poppy has become a symbol of remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives in war.

5,000 poppies have been kindly knitted and donated by individuals, community groups, schools and various organisations and businesses. The poppy installations will be in place for ANZAC Day and can be found in the following locations:

NORTHERN TASMANIA - National Trust properties:

After the Tasmanian Heritage Festival the poppies will be brought together to create a poppy blanket to commemorate all of those affected by war. This blanket will also mark the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli and become part of the National Trust collection for future generations.

Lighting Up Our HeroesOur lads and lassies left our shores and their lives were forever changed. For those at home the wait was endless but hope was always there.

This series of state-wide projections on to public buildings will commemorate and celebrate the heroes of our communities.

ROSNYLight up the Barn: Rosny Barn will be lit by a giant projection commemorating the service of Clarence residents in the Great War. Brought to you by Clarence City Council and National Trust (Tasmania) as part of Vivid in Tasmania.

BACKGROUND OF CONFLICT

Against a background of wars between their two countries, British and French explorers and scientists laid the basis for the scientific discovery of Australian botany. Inverawe sits on North West Bay, first mapped and named by the French under DEntrecasteaux. The French botanist, Labillardire named hundreds of Australian plant species. In 1802 Nicolas Baudins French ships were anchored off Dru Point, in line of sight. The Scottish botanist, Robert Brown, was here too and also described hundreds of Australian plant species. Come to Inverawe and see some of the plants they named and hear the stories of how progress emerged from conflict. Includes afternoon tea.

GERMAN INTERNMENT & INFLUENZA PANDEMICAt the beginning of WWI (1914) Germans were interned at the quarantine station to avoid conflict with British and Australian subjects. At the end of the war (1919) soldiers returning were quarantined due to the Influenza Pandemic and were shown compassion by nurses, doctors, Red Cross and the YMCA during their stay.

Roses from the Heart

Roses From The Heart is a unique memorial to the 25,566 convict women transported to Australia from Britain and Ireland from 1788 to 1853. The memorial consists of a bonnet, similar to that worn at the time, for each convict woman. Lighting Up Our Heroes - Wynyard

The project looks at the lives of two Wynyard residents who volunteered to assist the Australian war effort in different conflicts.

Sister Ruth Sargent enlisted in 1914, not long after returning from training in London. She spent WWI based in France, caring for Australian and Allied soliders wounded on the Western Front.

On her return to Wynyard she was employed as a school nurse on the North West Coast until her retirement 21 years later. She died in 1950.

Robert Tyrell enlisted in the Australian Army in 1939 at the age of 19, having farmed at Calder near Wynyard. He later became a pilot and instructor with the RAAF, before returning to Wynyard where he still lives.

The Wynyard Historical Society has amassed an impressive collection of photographs illustrating Australian life both at home and abroad during both World Wars. These photographs, along with biographical information on Sister Sargent and Robert Tyrell will be part of the presentation to be projected.

This new living history theatre production, from the creators of the award-winning Louisas Walk, takes place across the two court rooms at The Tench - one of Australias most significant convict precincts and winner of a 2014 TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award. Immerse yourself in the chilling tale of Mary McLaughlan, the first woman to be hanged in Van Diemens Land. The Tench, as known by its inhabitants, was the convict prisoners barracks for Hobart Town, housing some 50,000 male convicts. It later became Hobart Gaol with sections of the chapel converted into Supreme Courts connected by tunnels to the execution yard.

The Eaglehawk Neck historic site offers a unique perspective of the security system which operated throughout the Tasman and Forestier peninsulas during the convict period. Today, the only building which survives that period is the 1832 officers quarters. Thought to be the oldest timber military building in Australia, it has been restored and now acts as an interpretation centre. The infamous Dog Line which ran across the neck, devised to prevent the escape of prisoners from Port Arthur, is also interpreted. German Internment and Influenza Pandemic

TMAG as the state museum will host an exhibition to commemorate the role Tasmanians played in World War I and explore the impact war had on their families back at home by examining themes such as grief, remembrance, contributions to the war effort, conscription and legacy. Drawing from the museums multi-disciplinary collections, the exhibition will highlight stories previously untold including those of Tasmanian Aboriginal servicemen and of the men and women who provided medical support on the front line.

Runnymede has a rich collection of artefacts related to the maritime interests of Captain Charles Bayley who named the house after his favourite ship. His family and their descendants made it their home for over 100 years. The house was built around 1836 for Robert Pitcairn, one of the first lawyers admitted to the Supreme Court in the colony and a leading campaigner against the transportation of convicts from Britain.

The Bayly Family 0f Runnymede During World War I

The lives of the Bayly family at Runnymede during the First World War are revealed through the letters of James, Henry and Harriet Bayly. James embarked with the first detachment from Hobart in 1914, Henry saw the poppies in Flanders field, and Harriet gave her all in the care of the wounded and dying as a VAD nurse in London. This talk will follow their contribution to the war and give an insight into the Bayly women who were left to run the estate. Refreshments served.

In this very special Festival event, Tasmanians will have the chance to hear direct from Major Michael (Dan) Mori, the US Marine Corps counsel whose role was to defend David Hicks when he was incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay for terrorism. For four years, Dan Mori fought for Hickss right to go home, becoming alarmed with the way the US and Australian governments were handling the case.

Brian Wightman, former Minister for Justice and Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, will explore the case and its effects on Dan Mori - who now lives in Australia - in an up-close interview.

Drinks and canaps will be served before and after the conversation, and guests will be seated for the conversation itself. Signed copies of Dans book, In the Company of Cowards, will also be available for purchase.

Bonnets A Living Art Installation

A regional visit includes an opportunity to highlight local historic heritage places, issues and opportunities, visit key heritage places and precincts; and meet with local volunteers, operators and leaders.

Past regional visits have included visits to: Burnie, Derby/Bridport/Scotsdale, Devonport, Launceston, Longford, Oatlands and Swansea, and have given some great insights into what makes Tasmania tick.

Alexander Laing: His Story Told Through Music

Transported to NSW in 1813, Scots-born Alexander Laing eventually arrived in Van Diemens Land. He became a police constable in his new home and for over 50 years was a performer and composer of fiddle music. His vast repertoire featured over 60 original compositions with many dedicated to local personalities. The Tasmanian Harp Ensemble will play the recently rediscovered music of Laing, with David Wanless (Folk Federation of Tasmania) as dance caller. Period costume admired but not required. Ross Female Factory

Originally the site of a male punishment station, from 1847-1848 the buildings were adapted for use as a probation station for women. Known as the Ross Female Factory, it housed between 60 and 120 women at any one time, as well as accommodating the inmates babies. It operated as a hiring depot, nursery, probation and punishment station until 1854-1855. It is open free to the public from 9am - 5pm daily. Further information can be obtained at the Tasmanian Wool Centre.

2015/2016 Low Head Pilot StationDate Daily

Low Head Pilot Station is the oldest group of pilot buildings in Australia. While it was the first station to operate, it is the third oldest pilot service after the private operations of Sydney and Hobart. The pilot service dates from 1805, with the appointment of William House as Harbour Master at Port Dalrymple. The first building on the site was probably built in 1806. The pilot service still operates from this site today.
