Conventions of a Music Video
Sum 41 – Walking Disaster
The performance shots are in a sweet shop that automatically
tells me its going to be a upbeat song with a younger
target audience.
In the video the narrative shots are of a toy robot symbolising the idea of the story of the song as the lead
singer we presume
The performance shots are all in the sweet store but are shown in a different range of
shots.
When the shot goes back to the performance shot of the robot, it
is doing many different ‘fun’ activities to a male in their
childhood/teens.
Close to the end of the song there is a lot of fast-paced editing of the performers
trashing their performance space.
Whenever the song slows down, the robot stops doing
sports and begins doing things that aren't so physical. I didn’t like the idea of using a robot as
a symbol as what the song is about.
Linkin Park - Numb
The narrative is of a girl as everyday life is blurring
around her, there is much editing and effects used in
the piece.
The performance shots take place in a very visually appealing church and
throughout the song it shows 360 degrees of the space.
The people in a school all blurring around the girl completely rejecting her
from their lives. Isolating her completely.
All performers are shown in the piece with a slow zoom out from the lead singer in the middle. In these shots
the camera never stops moving.
There is a slow movement of the camera tracking from left to right showing the
performer and the surroundings of the inside of
the church.
Another shot of the girl with life blurring behind her. But this
time with her looking over her shoulder
towards it.
Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag
The narrative is about the ‘Teenage dirtbag’ and tells a story about him being a nerd in
school, being bullied and ignored completely.
The whole video is shot in a school for
performance they shot it in a school corridor with
loads of shots of each member of the band, focusing on the lead
singer.
The girl is shown looking back at him but in the
end its just him standing in front of her boyfriend
who she is walking towards.
As the story goes on it shows him showing
a fancying to a specific girl who has
no interest in him and possibly doesnt
know he exists.
Many shots of both narrative performers
and the band is shown including a birds eye
view of the band playing in a circle.
During the ‘prom night’ part of the song it is
performed in an actual prom night, on the stage as them performing as a
live band.
