about a new favourite?
FILM PHOTOGRAPHY
After staying loyal to the instant gratification

perfect for late summer days.

Lemon meringue pie is a defi-

FUN STUFF
make it
Make Your Own Tarte
1 Place the white, granu-
lated sugar, all-purpose flour,
cornstarch, water, freshly
squeezed lemon and lime
juices and grated lemon zest
in a saucepan.
2 Turn the stove top heat
to “medium-high” and blend
the ingredients thoroughly
using a wire whisk. Allow the
lemon filling mixture to come
to a full boil.
3 Whisk the butter and
egg yolks into the filling mix-
ture. Continue boiling the mix-
ture, stirring constantly, until it
thickens.
4 Pour the lemon filling
into the baked pastry shell or
a crumb crust, depending on
your preference. Preheat your
oven to 325 degrees Fahren-
heit.
5 Make the meringue top-
ping by placing egg whites into
a metal or glass mixing bowl
and beating them with a whisk
or electric mixer until they are
foamy. Add white sugar and
vanilla extract and continue
beating until the mixture is
stiff. Pour the meringue over
the lemon filling and spread it
out so it seals the edges of the
crust.
6 Bake the pie for 10 to 15
minutes, or until the meringue
topping is golden. Garnish the
top of the pie with fresh lemon
peel twists or a sprinkling of
yellow sanding sugar.

ALBUM Simple Math
ARTIST Manchester Orchestra
YEAR/LABEL ‘11/Favorite Gentleman
Their third studio album, Simple Math main-
tains Manchester Orchestra’s tried-and-true
indie rock sound while still progressing as a
group. Lyricist/vocalist Andy Hull states that
Simple Math tells a story of his life as a young
adult, covering issues that we can all relate
to. After the fame he garnered from his solo
project (which, by the way, we loved), we’re
happy to see Manchester back in action.

ALBUM Prophets
ARTIST Counterpards
YEAR/LABEL ‘11/Verona Records
An under-20 metalcore band hailing from
Hamilton, ON, Counterparts is known for
their professional and outstanding perfor-
mances, songwriting, and execution. Any
fan of the genre should give Prophets a try.
ALBUM Scurrilous
ARTIST Protest the Hero
YEAR/LABEL ‘11/Underground Ops
There’s a problem with Scurrilous that was
hard to nail down; Protest the Hero is loved
for their constant progression and change.
Scurrilous, while not at all bad, is not espe-
cially different or improved from Fortress.
ALBUM More Monsters and

ARTIST Skrillex
YEAR/LABEL ‘11/Big Beat, Atlantic
Oh yes, he did. Skrillex wows us again - with
more remixes, drops, and WUB WUB WUB.
This album needs no evaluation; we all know
that it’s a must for any dubstep afficianado.
ALBUM One Reality
ARTIST Texas in July
YEAR/LABEL ‘11/Equal Vision
It’s hard to believe that One Reality is only
the second album to come from Texas in
July; they are a remarkably established
band, and for good reason. If you were a fan

Sirens and Serenades is a
post-hardcore group from Al-
monte, Ontario. Hailing from
a town with a population less
than 5 000 strong, they’ve
come one heck of a long way.
S&S is on their third year,
and is stronger than ever.
They’ve played with some
of their greatest inspirations,
and have been rewarded with
positive words from their own
idols. In the words of Karl
Schubach of Misery Signals,
“You will make it, you have
what it takes.” We talk to Ja-
cob, Phil, and Allan to get the
deets on their new album, up-
coming tour, and more.

TARTE: What got you into mu-
sic? Give us a brief history of
how S&S formed.
PHIL: I personally got into mu-
sic because I had nothing else to
do. My cousin played guitar and
I thought it looked fun, so that
Christmas I bought myself my
first electric guitar from Radio
Shack. I always loved music, but
I really got into it when I realized
LEFT: Phil Andrews
RIGHT: Jacob Clarke

RIGHT: Matt Roberge
making my own sounds was way
more fun than the radio!
ALLAN: Just a thought among
friends that being in a band
would be fun and awesome. It
started with liking bands like The
Offspring and Weezer; we all
started to learn instruments and
by the end of grade seven we
got our little band together. We
called ourselves Red Morning
and played really terrible, crappy
songs -- but hey, we were young!
My transition to heavy music
came with groups like Limp Bi-
zkit, and after being in that ini-
tial band for two years my friend
Garrett Fitzgerald (currently in
the band Hemispheres) started
to enlist members to form what
is now Sirens and Serenades.
Early on we acquired Matt, and
30 TARTE vol. 1 issue 3
MUSIChe is (along with me) the only
“original” member. Starting out
as a more metal band, and then
morphing into metalcore, we
quickly found our spot as a light-
core band.
TARTE: Who are your biggest
and Silverstein -- bands that can
gain great success but still stay
true to the fans and their music.
(TARTE: We would have to
agree!)
JACOB: Slash, Carlos Santana,
Black Sabbath, Randy Rhoads.
“
ALLAN: Things were going well,
and then I left to attend school
and manage the band from four
hours away. When I came back
I used what I learned in school
to help organize our Sound the
Sirens tour. Then we got hooked
influences?
PHIL: 30 Seconds to Mars, HIM,
Sum 41, Blink-182... and a few
others. Different eras of my life
have come with different musical
tastes.
ALLAN: The likes of Blessthefall
TARTE: What would you say
was your “big break”, when
things suddenly got real for the
band?
PHIL: When we played the label

in Toronto.
up with the Metal Kombat tour
over the summer, and a fall tour
that I unfortunately can’t say
much about – but we will be all
over the place!
TARTE: What inspires you to
write new material?
”MY BIGGEST INFLUENCES COME FROM ... BANDS THAT CAN GAIN
GREAT SUCCESS BUT STILL STAY TRUE TO THE FANS AND THEIR MUSIC
vol. 1 issue 3 TARTE 31
PHIL: Everyday life. Some art-
ists look at events around the
world and write songs about
war or the government system
and things like that. For me I
just think about what made me
happy that day; or sad or angry
or whatever the case may be.
Sometimes just playing a guitar
is enough inspiration to write.
ALLAN: In S&S, a lot of our mu-
sic is written by Matt and Phil.
Once they have the song down,
I come along and put lyrics to it.
Lyrics come very easy to me, I
definitely use past experiences.
Some songs I can just sit down
and write straight away. But the
day someone takes the time to
read our lyrics, I think they will
see a new side of the band and
of me.
JACOB: I’m often inspired to sit
and watch Matt bring out a mil-
lion ideas in a few seconds. It’s
slightly awesome.
TARTE: You’re also kicking off
an Ontario tour on July 15; what
is the best part about a tour? The
worst?
PHIL: The best part about tour
is the exploration of all the cities
we visit. The worst is definitely
sleeping in the van. My neck
was sore enough already from
the last show!
ALLAN: The best part of tour is
meeting people at shows and
getting our name out there, re-
ally last tour was just to get our
name out enough to be able to
tour this summer and each tour
we hope to grow in fans until our
name is recognized for all our
hard work and dedication. The
worst part of tour would have to
be lack of being clean, I don’t
know about you but I like to be
clean! Being showered every
day is sometimes a tough task to
do, but at least we have our rule
in place that whoever has been
in the band longest showers
first. That means I get the most
hot water, Matt goes next, and
Phil and Jacob get what’s left!
[laughs]
JACOB: The best is playing
a ton of shows in a row. The
worst? Being stuck with a bunch
of smelly men in a van, and Phill!
TARTE: How do you get ready
for a show?
PHIL: I like to get ready for
shows by meeting the people. I
try to get to know a few people
in the crowd and have a more
intimate show with the fans and
kids in the crowd, you know? I
32 TARTE vol. 1 issue 3
MUSICdon’t really get nervous at all anymore in terms of
playing on stage for people. I get nervous about
other things, like “What if an amp stops working or
a guitar cuts out?”
ALLAN: I’ve now played every instrument in the
band except drums, so my pre-show routine has
changed a bunch. This will be my first tour on bass
as well as lead screams, so where before I only
needed to warm up my voice now it’s tune the
bass, vocal warm-ups, warm up the band’s tune
and go on stage! Of course I get nervous; not ner-
vous that I’ll screw up, but if people will like us. But
the second we kick into our set it all goes away,
there’s no time to worry any more -- you just have
to give the people their money’s worth!
TARTE: What’s your favourite show you’ve played
so far?
ALLAN: This year in February we played North
Bay, and it was a room packed to the ceiling with
metal heads and girls who screamed lower than
I could even dream of. And then when we start-
ed our set we had this electronic intro and glow
sticks, but the second it started everyone was into
it... probably one of the most fun times I’ve had on
stage.
PHIL: Agreed -- we showed up, and then a bunch
of metal heads showed up, and we thought we
would be this odd band out that doesn’t belong.
Then we played our set and right at the start of the
first song we had a mosh pit going and it was a
really good time.
TARTE: Have you ever slipped up at a show?
PHIL: We were playing the Opera House and
my guitar strap ripped during a guitar spin and
snapped the head of my guitar! [laughs] It’s still
on YouTube I believe!
(TARTE: Check out
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Nk7QF91F1w)
TARTE: What can we expect from S&S in the
near future?
PHIL: More shows, more tours, and even more
energy and fun! This is all we want to do and
were going to keep doing it!
ALLAN: Tour, tour, and more tour really, we got-
ta get our name out so we have to do anything
it takes to make this work. ▲

Katie Eleanor Interview by Emily Traver of Tarte Magazines
vol. 1 issue 3 TARTE 41
Are you self-taught?
I count myself as self taught on
many levels; I taught myself ev-
erything I use personally on my
own shoots, my techniques and
retouching skills, and remained
solely that way for three years.
Last September I came to a col-
lege where I could study pho-
tography, and it has given me
access to things like large and
medium format film, black and
white and colour darkrooms, and
a large studio space that I would
not have access to otherwise.
Do you tend to prefer film or
digital?
I shoot in film as much as I physi-
cally can, it’s beautiful and it suits
me. I shoot in digital for clients
because I have to and to build
my retouching skills. If it were
my way I’d shoot everything on
film, every lookbook and every
editorial, that’s what I hope to do
one day.
What selection of cameras
do you use for your photo-
graphs?
I have a small collection of film
cameras, my favourite being my
Zenit-B, (who I named Vladi-
mir,) and I currently work with a
Canon 500D for digital work, al-
though I am saving a hopefully
upgrade next year.
How did your career in pho-
tography start off? Did you al-
ways see yourself doing this?
When I was a child I saw myself
growing back into the ocean and
remaining underwater, a sea
creature in my own right. I be-
gan taking photography serious-
ly when I was fifteen years old
and I shot for my first small cli-
ents and an agency, since then
I have never seen myself doing
anything else.
And finally, what advice would
you give to aspiring photogra-
phers or other artists?
Give into yourself, in every way
possible, give into the deepest
darkest sides of your imagina-
tion and see the new muses you
uncover there. ▲

SO, WHAT HAS TARTE BEEN UP TO ALL
SUMMER?
Besides giving you all a fan-freaking-tastic
new issue, we’ve been wasting a lot of time in
between apartment viewings, packing, draw-
ing, and all the other usual suspects.
Check out www.veer.com for their awesome
array of free swag including wallpapers, fonts,
images, and texture.
The best part? www.veer.com/products/free
gives us a selection of Activity Books that you
can print off and feel really hip doing.
That’s right -- the friendly folks at Veer have
given us a really good reason to stay indoors
amidst the heat, and look like a graphic design
insider.
And tell us, what more could you want in a
summer?

TULLE FOR 2
vol. 1 issue 3 TARTE 63
ABOUT TULLEAt its heart, Tulle has always aimed to design vintage inspired
modern clothing. The word itself – tulle – conjures up classic
notions of femininity and creativity. Tulle fabric has been a
basic building block of gowns, veils and, of course, ballet tu-
tus - all beautifully simple silhouettes that are simultaneously
designed with great attention to detail. We strive to capture
he essence of tulle”and reflect it in all that we create.
With a desire to start a young contemporary collection at an
affordable price point, Tulle was launched in 1999. We began
with a small collection that focused on outerwear and sweat-
ers. Since then we have grown and now Tulle offers a full
sportswear collection of tops, skirts and dresses. Our formula
is simple: we soak up our love of vintage fashion, mix it up
with vintage and modern silhouettes, and have fun playing
with classic and contemporary prints to create a distinctive
brand that is both feminine and sweet. Perfect for a day out
on the town that can easily be carried into the evening.
Tulle has become an editorial favorite of magazines such
as Lucky, In Style, Marie Claire, Real Simple, Glamour and

FASHION & BEAUTY - BLOGOSPHERE
Beauties in the Blogosphere Mode D’Amour - Annemiek Kessels
TARTE: How does it feel to go
from blogging about your style to
being featured and interviewed
by major names in the industry
(among the likes of Vogue Girl
Korea, Vogue.de, Refinery29)?
AK: It’s awesome! But sometimes
it’s still strange to see myself in
a fashion magazine, or read my
own interviews up on the internet.
I would have never thought that
blogging would bring so much op-
pertinities for me, but it definitely
encourages me to keep blogging.
vol. 1 issue 3 TARTE 73
TARTE: Do you have one “go-
to” piece that tends to make
more appearances in your
wardrobe rotation? Why do
you love it?
AK: I love to wear my silk Acne
jacket with almost everyting.
It’s the first item I take with
me when I leave the house
and I’m not wearing a jacket
already.
Pictured at right.
TARTE: We all have a few
pieces that end up in the back
of the closet, tags fully at-
tached. Do you have any tips
for avoiding these impulse
buys?
AK: I think that everyone has
one of these buys once in a
while, but I think that the best
way to avoid impulse buys is
to think about how you are
planning to combine them with
the rest of your clothes before
buying them! ▲
TARTE: We love your more
wearable takes on unique,
trendy pieces. What are some
tips for sampling a trend while
still staying true to your own
style?
AK: Don’t buy something the
first moment you’ve seen it
without thinking about it. I al-
ways think before I buy some-
thing new if I can easily style
it with the rest of my wardrobe
before buying.menswear trendacne top, zara pants, zara heels

and maxing the sunshine hours we have left.
TARTE: What are your tips on transitioning all
those summer dresses, wedges, and blouses
into the fall?
JESS ZAINO: I love the idea of keeping my
favorite Summer dresses and adding a fitted
dark blazer and colored tights or leggings, if
the cooler Fall weather calls for it. My Fall ob-

MODEL STATS:
Height 5’ 9.5”
Hair Brown
Eyes Brown
When did you begin modelling
professionally?
In my hometown I would model
for stores advertisements or
spreads, but it didn’t get very
serious until last fall when I was
introduced to Peggi Lepage and
Mario at Velocci. So I guess it
started there!
What do you think about the
decision many girls are mak-
ing to launch one’s career at
a very young age (think Elle
ALL THE
Fanning, Lindsey Wixson)?
I think the girls who start when
they’re 14 or 15 end up growing
up too fast and don’t really get
a chance to become an individ-
ual.. It’s great that they’ve been
given the opportunity, but at the
same time I’d wonder if it was
something they themselves truly
wanted.
What has been your favourite
photo shoot to date?
My favourite shoot was either a
Spanish-Matador themed one
with photographer Sylwia Bo-
bryk, or a look-book i did for
friend Jayson Araja.
Being on the other side of the
camera, what tips can you
give photographers?
I always like when the photogra-
pher gives feedback or yells at
you to do something or move a
certain way. It’s good to see en-
thusiasm and that they want to
turn the project into something
beautiful. ▲

What got you into modelling?
I have always loved fashion!
When I was a little girl I would
put on my mom’s shoes and
walk the runway (our hallway)
and pretend to be a model but
I always thought it was just a
dream. Then a couple of years
ago I met Peggi Le Page at the
Eaton Center and she changed
my life. Peggi got me my first test
shoot and took me to Cynthia
Cully at Spot 6 Management.
Without the help of these two
women I don’t know if I would be
modeling today.
What do you wish you could
change about the fashion in-
dustry?
The fashion industry -- and mod-
eling in particular -- can be very
tough. There will always be a girl
thinner, taller, and younger than
you. You have to love yourself,
flaws and all. It really helps to
separate the job from the person
you are. If I could change one
thing, I would make sure that
girls who are modeling and es-
pecially girls who travel to model
should be at least 18. It’s really
hard at 19 to be away from your
family and friends and deal with
the fashion world, but at 16 I
think it would very easy to lose
your way.
What tips can you give to de-
signers or stylists when at a
photo shoot?
Stylists should always consider
the girl they are dressing. They
usually have a vision of what
they want to achieve but its im-
portant to make adjustments to
suit the model. I Iove it when a
photgrapher gives me feedback.
If the photographer doesn’t say
much it’s hard to know if you are
on the right track and giving them
what they want. I love a photog-
rapher who enjoys their work,
and we can have fun but still get
the job done. I actually think that
the best thing about the fashion
industry is the people that you
get to meet! Most of the people
I’ve worked with are wonderful
creative people that are excited
about their work! ▲

This novel is, by far, my all-time favourite.
Pullman draws the reader in from the first

CINEMATIC
cinematicFILM Cowboys and Aliens
STARRING Olivia Wilde, Daniel Craig
RELEASE July 23 ‘11
Starring Thirteen and James Bond, Cowboys
and Aliens is poised to be the next big thing,
compared to Transformers in its summer
blockbuster-y-ness and with a great video
game-like quality. Is it intelligently scripted?
Maybe not. Is it thought-provoking? Srsly
now. But Cowboys packs a crowd pleasing
punch with its awesome premise (Cowboys!
Aliens! Holy sh*t!) that we thought would
only ever exist in our jumbled toy boxes.
FILM Captain America: The
First Avenger
STARRING Chris Evans, Tommy
Lee Jones
RELEASE July 22 ‘11
Back with his fancy-ass vibranium sheild and
family friendly patriotism, Captain America is
the newest in a line of gritty comic “graphic
novel” reboots. The film takes a Spiderman-
like approach, showing the Captain as a
scrawny soldier before his transformation.
Will he get the girl? Save a puppy? You’ll
have to watch to find out. (SPOILER: Duh.)
FILM Friends With Benefits
STARRING Mila Kunis, J.T.
RELEASE July 22 ‘11
So, after gaining (current) recognition
through Black Swan, Mila Kunis freaks us all
out by doing the exact same role that Natalie
Portman did in her own post-Aronofsky rom-
com, No Strings Attached.
...
Was Black Swan real life? Are Natalie and
Mila one person? Does Natalie resent Mila’s
sass? Will Mila’s slightly saucier knock-off
rock our socks off? We can only hope.
FILM Horrible Bosses
STARRING Jason Bateman, Charlie
Day, Jason Sudeikis, etc
RELEASE July 8 ‘11
Every summer needs one comedy that stars
a slew of popular actors/actresses, has a
slightly off-kelter plotline, and leaves us all
a little bit unsatisfied. Horrible Bosses was
funny, but it lacked depth beyond “Man, our
bosses suck.” This is still worth watching,
like most silly Hollywood fluff.
(Pompous criticizing aside, I did indeed
laugh my ass off.)
FILM Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows Pt. 2
STARRING Daniel Radcliffe, Emma
Watson, Rupert Grint,
Ralph Fiennes
RELEASE JULY 2011
Everybody is still batshit over Potter. And
who can blame them? I don’t just say that
because I have been a more-than-loyal fol-
lower of the entire entire novel and film se-
ries -- the whole crew has seriously pulled
out all the stops in the final two installments.
How we were all lucky enough to watch three
child actors grow, as opposed to lose any tal-
ent or charm over the course of a decade, is
beyond me. Rupert Grint (as Ron Weasley)
shows a particular heart (and talent) when
compared to the existing films; Radcliffe and
Watson, as usual, do their characters proud.
However, it must be said that the very best
part was the contribution of the smaller char-
acters; those actors playing Molly Weasley,
Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood
added to this film’s staying power. ▲
