La Amazona est compuesta por un mosaico de ecosistemas y tipos de vegetacin, que incluyen bosques lluviosos, bosques estacionales, bosques deciduos,bosques inundablesy sabanas, lo cual refleja las condiciones ambientales yla influencia humana del pasado. La cuenca es drenada por el Ro Amazonas, el ms grande del mundo en trminos de su volumen y el segundo ms largo despus del Nilo. Cuenta con ms de 1,100 tributarios, 17 de los cuales tienen ms de 1000 millas de longitud. Dos de ellos (el Negro y el Madeira) tienen un volumen mayor que el del Ro Congo (antiguamente Zaire). El sistema ribereo es el sostn del bosque y su historia juega un papel importante en el desarrollo de sus bosques lluviosos.

Amazon is composed of a mosaic of ecosystems and vegetation types including rainforests, seasonal forests, deciduous forests, flooded forests and savannas, reflecting environmental conditions and human influences of the past. The basin is drained by the Amazon River, the world's largest in terms of its volume and the second longest after the Nile. It has over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are over 1,000 miles long. Two of them (the Black and the Madeira) are larger than the River Congo (formerly Zaire) volume. The river system is the mainstay of the forest and its history plays an important role in the development of its rainforests.
